Title: Picture Perfect
Author: usedusernames
Fandom: Just Shoot Me!
Pairing: Elliot DiMauro/Dennis Finch
Spoilers: References to seasons one through three.
Notes: Though the general message applies to most all the series, seasons one and two make up the focal point of this essay as that is what has been released on DVD so far. Edited June 8 to add some more completed stories to the recs.
My History With 'Just Shoot Me!'

I came into watching ‘Just Shoot Me!’ several years ago. I was never truly into it, but it came on directly before ‘Spin City’ and I was a rather Michael J. Fox obsessed person, so mostly I blew half an hour watching it. I never really gave it much thought beyond some conversations with my family that somehow had the show come up.
But, one fateful day, I went on a David Spade spree. Unfortunately, I had about three DVDs which had him in them, and that was simply not enough. And so, the first two seasons of ‘Just Shoot Me!’ were then bought.
Besides the characters names, I remembered exactly two things about the show: David Spade was in it, and I had once shipped Elliot/Finch.
Well, David Spade was of course still in it, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that I still shipped Elliot/Finch; they were loving, sweet, goofy, touchy-feely pranksters who genuinely cared for each other even if they did put the other down frequently. Theirs was a relationship that had an interesting, real-couple-relationship dynamic of ‘I love you, so I can tease you’, that was available between any two characters on the show but between them most of all.
Dennis Finch

Finch is secretary to Jack Gallo. He is outspoken, sarcastic, snippy, egotistical, and generally a bit of a jerk. However, he is well-liked among his peers, and is fantastic at his job no matter how often he gripes against it. When it comes right down to it, he’s very reliable in terms of friendship; though he rarely shows his sensitive side, when he does it’s significant.
Finch and his Father

Finch’s poor relationship with his father may be very important to Finch’s personality with others. His father says how he is a reserved, quiet sort of person who plays the harp 'like an angel'; very different from the Dennis Finch shown when his father’s not there.
This is not to say his father's view of Finch isn't accurate. Finch has a feminine side beyond what his father mentions: He loves ceramic kittens (to the point of naming them), is fond of jams, and writes for the 'Dear Miss Pretty' advice column. However, he also seems at least slightly embarrassed over most all of this and covers it at work until directly confronted.
Though at first Finch just mentions vaguely that he and his dad were never close, it is later revealed that Finch sees himself as nothing but a disappointment in his father’s eyes ("I'm sorry to disappoint you yet again," Finch tells his father over dinner in 'Pass the Salt', episode 18). Finch's father says he was never disappointed in Dennis, but Finch gives little to no reaction to this revelation, so whether Finch believes this or not is debatable.
It does seem that Finch loves his father despite their not being close, but it wouldn’t be a stretch that Finch’s father is the cause of Finch’s sarcasm in the oft used sitcom method of having sarcasm be a defense mechanism.
Elliot DiMauro

Elliot is Blush Magazine’s head photographer. He is an overconfident, witty, scheming, womanizing individual, but is a rather nice guy despite all his flaws. He supports his friends easily with compliments when they’re down, and pulls pranks on them when they’re not.
Elliot's Past

Elliot was a fat, acne-ridden, dorky-glasses-wearing, unpopular youth. He eventually grew into being sure of himself, his confidence growing over time. Obviously he thinks more of himself working at Blush than he did when he was in high school, but less obviously he also thinks more of himself than when he was an unsuccessful photographer. Before working for Blush, he, in his own words, ‘gave up’. Though this was how he met Jack Gallo, and so was beneficial to his future career, at the time it was because he saw nothing ahead of himself as a photographer. Despite being upset over this turn of events, he was ready to scrap his dreams and go to work in his cousin’s store.
His confidence as a Blush photographer canonically stems from overcompensation for his being a nerd when he was younger, but there are still holdovers from his former, less successful self, such as his belief that without his ‘lucky thong camera lens’ he would be unable to take good pictures.
Long story short: Neither Elliot nor Finch are depressed individuals, but both put on masks to boost their self-worth.
Why This Pairing Works

Firstly, the above; they both have masks. They both build walls, no matter how ultimately thin these walls are, to keep up the images they’ve made of themselves.
They also both know exactly how to tear each other’s walls down. Unintentionally, maybe. For personal gain, perhaps. Or maybe just to annoy the other. But no matter why, they know how to get under each other’s skin, know each other’s inner workings more than their other coworkers, and the closeness of their relationship implies that this is just fine.
For example: The aforementioned camera lens. Finch knew of its importance and the story behind it, and then held it ‘hostage’ to manipulate Elliot into doing what he wanted. Kind? No. Healthy in any sort of relationship? No. But the fact is that Finch must have Elliot’s trust to be given such an intimate story, and though Finch then takes advantage of this trust, Elliot neither holds a grudge nor is surprised (though he does get revenge). Elliot also doesn’t lose any of the previous trust or closeness he and Finch had before. Whether it’s healthy or not, the manipulative banter and pranks between them are an integral part of their relationship that they both enjoy.
Secondly, their closeness:

They are very clearly and canonically in a relaxed, close relationship with each other that is full of easy touches and soothing hands. After an embarrassing stint on television in the episode ‘Secretary’s Day’, Finch isn’t surprised when Elliot offers a hug. Though Elliot makes a joke at Finch’s expense, this is still one of the first signs at the physical closeness of their relationship shown on screen. How it is dealt with, however, shows that such affection--though possibly exaggerated for this circumstance--- is not unusual.
There are other significant signs of affection; when Jack‘s former partner arrives, it is Elliot‘s hand on his arm and Elliot’s voice telling him to be cool that appears to keep Finch from blowing his stack. When Finch is trying to convince his father that he’s not gay, Elliot jokingly gives him a kiss on the lips, where Finch seems more upset with the circumstance and the image it sends to his father than the kiss itself. Both of these examples give light to the tight, loving relationship between them, showing that their personal bubbles, particularly that of the slightly more standoffish Finch, are mostly null and void when it comes to each other.
From there, there is an array of affectionate small touches; hands on backs, picking lint off coats, bumping knuckles, and touching fingers.
Finally, they care:

To begin with, Elliot protects Finch from someone who, quite literally, wishes to kill him. Though he enlists Nina's help for this, it is obviously his own idea, and Elliot then proceeds to announce his defensiveness of Finch before going down to the garage, apologizing to Finch for not believing him, and taking Finch out for a drink.
In another circumstance, in the episode 'La Cage', Finch dates one of Elliot's ex-girlfriends. Though Elliot would probably have reason to be upset with this development alone-- dating a friend's ex is an overused reason for a fallout between said friends-- he is not. Instead, he is concerned for Finch's safety, and is the moral support for Finch when the relationship falls apart.
'La Cage' also shows the strength of their friendship, as it is Finch that Elliot calls when he winds up in a cage due to dating the crazy girl again at the end. They've bonded a bit over having experienced the same torture, if only for this episode.
Finch also manages to weasel his way into Elliot's personal life, and is given full disclosure rights to Elliot's sexual exploits. In fact, he is not only given all details to Elliot's more intimate side, but he expects to be given them and is slightly offended when Elliot asks Jack to meet his girlfriend (Stacey) first. Finch takes his place in Elliot's personal life a step further when, after Elliot says he's thinking about taking a big step and asking Stacey to move in with him, he puts a hand on Elliot's shoulder and confuses Stacey with what are presumably ex-girlfriends of Elliot (one of whom he then points out as 'really annoying'). Considering that Finch knew only moments before that he'd never met the girl, this is an odd path to take. It is especially odd, and perhaps a little revealing, since Finch only goes this route once Elliot lets it be known that he wants his relationship with this girl to be more serious.
Quotes:
Finch: (to Herb, Jack’s old partner) Should I book ya a flight to Tibet, Herb?
Elliot: (patting Finch’s arm) Finch, be nice.
…
Finch: (to Herb, Jack’s old partner) One or the other, Herb! There’s no wrong answer!
Elliot: (patting Finch’s arm) Take it easy, buddy, take it easy.
(From ‘Jack’s Old Partner’, episode 26)
Elliot: (After Finch was embarrassed on national television) Hey, Finch, I’m glad to see you. (Opens arms for a hug) C’mere. C’mere. (Finch continues to just stare at him; expression clearly saying ‘no’.) C’mon, come here…(Finch moves to him and Elliot hugs him tightly, Finch patting Elliot’s back.)
(From ‘Secretary’s Day’, episode 5)
Elliot: (Knocks on Jack's office door but comes in, not acknowledging Finch, without waiting for welcome.) Jack, are you gonna be here a minute? I want you to meet my new girlfriend.
Finch: (Looking affronted.) Hey, what about me?
Elliot: (Looks to Finch.) I told you, Finch, you and I were just a summer thing.
(From 'In the Company of Maya', episode 19)
Elliot: Yeah, no one messes with Finch!
(From 'Bravefinch', episode 27)
A Match Made in Something Just Short of Heaven

They are, in fact, something close to each other’s romantic ideals:
Elliot himself says of a girl (of why she’s not his type): "She lacks a certain self-absorbed, crazy neediness that I seem to feed on". And of a girl who he’s enamored with, "She’s interesting, she’s intelligent--it’s a nice change of pace for me". Both of these descriptions could be easily used for Finch, who is clever in his field, obviously can pique Elliot’s interest in his pranks, jokes, and life in a whole. But he also is definitely a bit egotistical and, from his strange, almost akin-to-stalker habits, is needy in a relationship.
However, despite being needy, Finch also is eager to cover the object of his affections with praise; he will throw out terms of endearment and treat them so much more highly than any of his friends that the change of personality is almost strange. It appears that between his seeing most people he dates as better than he is and his getting generally frightfully sweet when infatuated, he showers them with loving phrases and praise.
Given his giggling, school-boy response to even a second-hand compliment from a girl he likes, this is praise which the former near-failure Elliot feeds on.
Closing Statements (Why I Ship Elliot/Finch)

In their platonic relationship, they can ground each other, calm each other, and be each other’s rock. In a romantic relationship, they would already know each other; Finch, knowing Elliot’s flaws, would have no reason to consider Elliot better than himself and so would be able to continue to ground Elliot while giving the occasional praise that Elliot needs, and Elliot would have everything he’s said he’s craved in an individual but could still calm Finch’s somewhat erratic, unreasonable anger with quite literally a touch of the hand.
Between them, they have what they want in a relationship and also have insanity that complements the other’s entirely.
Sure it’s a bit sick, but that’s love.

Never saw Top Gun...
History Boys is a nice film and given its canon it seems people ought to write for it, but it kind of has the 'feel' of a small fandom, if that makes sense.
:/ Too bad I don't like Die Hard 4; I'd check that community out otherwise. (Know that film inside out and backwards, too, as my dad likes it...)

I think I wound up reading a John/Gabriel once, though it had no build-up to the pairing and was just evaluation of them messing around. It wasn't bad, per se, but I guess too much of a stretch for me.
I think any pairing can be possible, but it'd be awesome if more people actually set it up to be that way, first, before shoving them together....
