Title: Yin- Yang: Beautiful Balance.

Fandom: (Bakuten Shoot) Beyblade.
Pairing: Kai Hiwatari/Rei (Ray) Kon
Spoilers: Some spoilers for Beyblade 2002 (V-force) and G-Revolution.
The Series
Bakuten Shoot Beyblade (aka, Beyblade|| Beiburedo) was originally a manga (Japanese comic) created by a man called Takao Aoki, about a young boy named Takao Kinomiya (Tyson Granger) and his adventures in the sport Beyblade, along side three other youths (Kai Hiwatari, Rei Kon and Max Mizuhara) which make up his team- the BBA Revolution (The ‘Bladebreakers’); also known as Team BBA.
Beyblade –quite simply- is a game involving launching a spinning top at an opponents spinning top and seeing which one causes the other to stop spinning first. Of course, things are never that easy, and through modification and on occasion, cheating, one can have more chance of winning. And then of course, there are the sacred spirits- powerful creatures that exist within a select few beyblades which gives a ‘blade more power and allows you more control over its actions.
The animated series ‘Bakuten Shoot Beyblade’ –which was an adaptation of the original manga- originally aired in Japan in 2001, followed by the second series ‘Beyblade 2002’, so named for the year that it was aired, and was finally completed with ‘Beyblade G-Revolution’ in 2003.
Due to the large amount of boys in the series, the fandom is rife with shounen-ai fanworks. This is due to the fact that, despite it’s sporty context and it’s competitive spirit, the characterisation and the deep and often complex relationships between the characters helps this series retain a broader, older and more dedicated fanbase than many other anime of it’s genre.
Additionally, since the animated adaptation of the manga has no canon couples in it, fans are within their right to decide for themselves who they feel have the basis to become and would make a great couple.
By far, one of the most popular – if not the most popular- pairing since the series was first published and aired is Kai Hiwatari and Rei Kon.
Kai Hiwatari
Full name: Kai Hiwatari
Age: Beyblade- 14/15; Beyblade 2002- 15/16; Beyblade: G-Revolution: 16/17
Ethnicity: Japanese.
Nationality: Russian.
Physical Features: Eye colour; red (season one)/ silver (Season two)/ purple (Season three).
Hair colour; Front- silver, back- dark blue.
Often wears; Blue face paint and scarf.
Element: Fire.
Sacred Spirit: Suzaku- the phoenix. One of the four gods in oriental legend.
Voice actor/actress: David Reale/ Takano Urara.
About Kai; The minute Hiwatari Kai stepped into Beyblade, he meant business.
Kai is a legendry blader- highly skilled and coldly determined. Winner of the last world tournament; he is admired, adored and feared. He immediately gained the role of the anti-hero, and the main rival of the series’ protagonist when he revealed himself as the leader of a gang called the Blade Sharks- a group of ruthless boys who went around destroying children’s blades.
After loosing to said protagonist, Kai was forced to re-evaluate his skills. He later –grudgingly- accepted an offer to join the Beyblade Association’s (BBA) official team, filling the vital role of captain.
Using his superior experience and knowledge, Kai proved to be a strong leader, however, despite his friendly team- mates; he remained aloof, cold and at times, nasty. As Kai himself stated; he is no team player. Far happier brooding on his own, Kai found his new charges tiring. It wasn’t until he betrayed them for a better deal he showed just how ruthless he was
Eventually though, the team won him back, thawing his icy disposition a little in the process. Near the end of series one, he began to admit to himself that not only did he want friends; he had them. When he realised that his team really meant something to him, Kai fought back against the evil mastermind (who happened to be his Grandfather) with renewed passion.
When he lost, Rei Kon enquired as to how he was. He replied that it felt like he hadn’t lost- he’d gained something far more valuable.
In Beyblade 2002, Kai returned- without the blue face paint. Fans went into shock that the ‘tattoo’ theory had been proved false. They were in for a bigger shock to find that the one time ‘bad ass’ of the Beyblade world was acting entirely normal; attending school and leaving beyblading behind him.
However, a draw with a new enemy soon set that straight, and Kai was on the next plane to Japan to re-join with his old team to seek out new challenges; beyblading spirit burning once again.
This time round, Kai was slightly friendlier. Willing even to seek out those of his team who were in distress to offer words of advice and comfort. In this series, Kai took on the role of the stoic elder brother, carefully watching over the group and keeping them from harm. While he was not particularly talkative in this series, he showed that he was a lot happier with his lot in life.
Later in the series, he showed that he did have a kind heart underneath that scowl, and was openly devastated when he lost Suzaku; his phoenix companion.
He regained Suzaku not long after his loss and G-Revolution began. Possibly down to growing up, but the last series bought about another big mood swing. Most traces of Kai’s more easy going and open nature seemed to have disappeared.
While not as guarded as he originally was, Kai slid back into being very introverted (as opposed to just plain introverted). This series saw Kai rejoin the Russian Team Neo Borg and later go on to join the enemy- BEGA. However, Kai eventually rejoined Team BBA and secured them a much needed win and- despite the fact that his beloved Suzaku was destroyed as a result- he seemed finally at peace with himself.
Rei Kon

Full name: Rei Kon.
Age: Beyblade- 13/14; Beyblade 2002- 14/15; Beyblade: G-Revolution: 15/16
Ethnicity: Chinese; Neko-jin (cat person)
Nationality: Chinese.
Physical Features: Eye colour; Yellow (season one)/ brown (Season two)/ yellow (Season three). [Neko-jin feature: Cat slit pupils]
Hair colour: Black/ very deep purple. Shin length, but bound back.
Often wears: Yin- yang headband, white Chinese top, white hair bind, black ki trousers.
Element: Metal/ Gold.
Sacred Spirit: Byakko- White Tiger. One of the four gods in oriental legend.
Voice actor/actress: Daniel DeSanto/ Aya Hisakawa.
About Rei; Rei first walked into ‘Beyblade’ in a flurry of commotion. Entered into the Japanese tournament as a last minute contender without even having to qualify; he all ready had the full backing of the chairman of the BBA who announced him as a phenomenal new talent spotted on the streets of Hong Kong.
Rei was also the first person to ever take Takao –with his Seiryu sacred spirit- on and win; his tough street breed skills apparent when he destroyed Takao in a blitz of lightning fast attacks.
At first Rei came across as arrogant and somewhat nasty, but this proved to be a front when Takao came back in the second round and beat him- destroying his Dragoon blade in the process. In admiration, Rei conceded the match despite the fact that he was ensured a win, proving to everyone’s surprise that he was actually extremely noble and kind-hearted. Unsurprisingly, he was to become a valuable member of the BBA.
During the rest of ‘Beyblade’, Rei proved to be a steady blader, winning and losing, but always humble.
However, Rei’s most defining moment came in the final tournament. With the pressure of Kai’s loss bearing down on him, Rei had only one choice to save the world from tyranny- win.
Unfortunately, his opponent was Boris- a young man trained from childhood to show no emotion but hate. In his first match, the depths of Boris’ ruthlessness literally blew Rei away when his blades attack slashed at Rei himself. Rei came back in the second match to claim a win, but the price was collapsing from exhaustion. In the final match Rei revealed to the world what he was truly made of. With painstaking patience and intense mental focus- despite being weak and having not only his clothes, but his skin torn by blades of air- Byakko in his fury over Rei’s pain shattered Boris’ blade into tiny pieces. Rei collapsed and was rushed to hospital, unaware of his win. The rest of the team sombrely praised Rei for his bravery, before going on to win the tournament; only possible due to Rei’s victory.
In Beyblade 2002, Rei returned to Japan when a mysterious stranger challenged him to a beybattle and won. Sure that this was connected to his team, Rei rushed to Takao’s dojo and rejoined the BBA to take on this new danger.
In this series, Rei faced many personal dilemmas. He came close to quitting the team when his noble soul refused to accept Takao’s decision to cheat. However, Takao soon learned of his mistake and the team carried on. The biggest blow by far for Rei came when one of the members of the mysterious team destined to capture their sacred spirit bit beasts challenged him to a match and won, sealing away Byakko- Rei’s best friend and source of power- forever.
Rei hit an all time low, unable to even knock over the pieces of wood that the rest of his team were shredding with ease. Feeling like the weakest link, Rei slipped off alone to do some soul searching and came to accept his loss when he discovered that the team were set on getting his Byakko back.
And he did. When Kai took on the one who had sealed Byakko away, Rei once again faced extreme personal danger when a piece of roller coaster track began to fall on him. In a flash of light, Byakko surged free, blasting the track to pieces and saved Rei’s life.
He later went on to compete in the tournament alongside Kai and drew his match. However, Kai lost and their team came third in the tournament.
G-Revolution saw Rei take the initiative to leave Team BBA, spurred on by the desire to prove himself. Unsurprisingly, Rei stormed to victory in China and rejoined the Bai Fu Zu (White Tiger X) as leader.
This series saw Rei go on to beat Takao and Max, but finally loose to Kai (though it was extremely close). He later lost to Takao (again, a very close match) and rejoined Team BBA.
Why Kai and Rei?
-Subtext evidence (also known as ‘hints’)
The first series: ‘Bakuten Shoot; Beyblade’, was what created the KaixRei fandom. Initially, fans were drawn to this pairing for wholly shallow reasons; they were the only two bishounen (pretty boy) in the early series.
However, as the series progressed, the development of character personalities added a whole other dimension to the possibility of a ‘relationship’. Fans found increasingly that personality wise, being as difficult as he was, Kai only really got on with Rei.
Many call it ‘yin and yang’ and to some extent, regardless of whether a romantic relationship could exist or not, this is true. Kai is quiet, mysterious and lacking in tolerance. Rei is quiet, understanding and mature. The series showed time and time again that Rei would be the first person to enquire as to whether Kai was all right, or the one who would look to Kai for his opinion, where the others would carry on regardless. In return, Rei became the only person that Kai was remotely close to in that Rei would be the first person he would mutter information to and walk or sit besides. In fact, many believed there was a comfort thing between them as they would always be found standing together, a little off to the side.

It was this tentative closeness and complimentary personalities, which forged many followers of the fandom. Even those who chose not to acknowledge possible boy love between them often portray them as best friends.
However, given Kai’s avoidant nature, many saw his deep respect for Rei as perhaps being possible to develop into stronger feelings.
It was later in the series though that provided the most ‘hints’. Notably, when Kai went missing, Rei was the first person to notice that he was gone and openly worried about his team captain while the rest of the team shrugged it off. Eventually, after staring forlornly out of the window, Rei got up and announced that he was going to go in search of Kai. It was only then, when the rest of team BBA saw his concern that they offered to help. When they snuck into the Abbey where Kai was, Rei even offered himself up as bait and lured the guards away from Takao because he was so worried about Kai.
Kai rejoined and all continued as normal. When Kai lost his match in the Russian finals –his first loss- Rei was the first to ask if he was okay and stated that; He wished there was something he could say to make Kai feel better.
In the next match, Rei went up to blade, when Kai added his hand around the group gesture of gripping Rei’s hand- the first affectionate gesture he’d made in the entire series. On top of that he accompanied that with a “Good luck, my friend.” Again, the first affectionate thing he’d said in the entire series.
During that battle, as Rei suffered from the brutal assault of Boris’s attacks, rather than sit with his usual blank expression, Kai was on his feet, clenching his fists and gritting his teeth, obviously restraining himself from leaping in there to put a stop to the match. When Rei collapsed, it was Kai who warned him that he couldn’t’ take much more, and it was Kai who gave him his Drigger blade and offered words of encouragement.
In the final, spectacular round, as Rei fell backwards, close to loosing consciousness images of his friends flashed through his mind, finally his mind settled on Kai and the words “Good luck, my friend,” resounded in his head, giving him the strength to gather everything he had for one last attack.
Kai visibly worried about Rei while he was in hospital- a first for Kai. Another first came when Kai looked genuinely thrilled over something. That something was the return of his Suzaku followed seconds later by Rei hobbling (with some help of course) in, straight from hospital.
V-Force/ 2002
I think VForce proved that Kai and Rei, when the time of need arises, have a very good sense of teamwork, especially with each other.

V-Force, the second season of Beyblade, launched a brand new art style, storyline, characters, and a different perspective to the Kai x Rei revolution. It is the must-watch season for all Kai x Rei fans.
Unlike its predecessor and follow-up, V-Force's plot did not focus on tournament after tournament after tournament. Instead, more attention was placed on the actual characters themselves and their connections with the sacred spirits, also known as bitbeasts.
When Kai and Rei are first introduced to the story, it is after they are defeated--or in Kai's case, tied--by an unknown beyblading group. The team regroups in Japan, where the main character, Takao Kinomiya, lives with his grandfather. During the remainder of the series, the team had to protect their ownership of their respective bitbeasts from various antagonists ranging from a team known as the Saint Shields to scientists vying for power. Along the way, the audience saw aspects about the characters that have not been shown before.
In the first episode Rei and Kai are seen together, there is immediate squeal-worthy fanservice, although it is most likely a cell shading mistake. Nonetheless, it begins the significant foundation of the relationship Kai and Rei share. They start out intimately and bold:

Episode 8: Return of the Bladebreakers
Although there are innumerable instances such as this where Kai and Rei are staring at each other or simply standing next to each other, these subtle hints are not what makes V-Force the Kai x Rei season. Underlying the loose plot, there is a thick layer of romance and affection.
One of the most memorable episodes is “Rock Bottom”, the unfolding of the Saint Shield arc. This arc is a key point in Kai’s and Rei’s relationship. Not only do the two friends show deep concern for each other, but they also show how well they work together as a team.
After losing to Dunga, a member of the Saint Shields, Rei yet again experiences the loss of his best friend and White Tiger bit beast Driger. With beaten demeanor, he walks out of practice on his own in hopes for some quiet contemplation. He is not alone for long, however, as Kai appears seemingly out of nowhere:
Rei: Tell me what to do, Driger, I just don’t know what I should do!
Huh? Kai!
Kai: How long are you going to be like this? Do you really think that you’re the only one affected by Driger’s capture, Rei? Let me show you something.

Kai speaks harsh words, but they are required to slap Rei out of his momentary stupor. For Kai to go out of his way in itself is amazing, for Kai can usually be seen leaning against the wall with eyes closed and arms crossed, not caring about anything other than his own performance. Out of the whole team, Kai is the one who most wants Driger back with Rei, even to the extent that he sneaks out in the middle of the night to fight an invisible opponent in Rei’s place, Kai is determined to save Driger from the ancient seal that it has been put under.

Kai shown here preventing Rei from battling a dangerous night battle, shortly before he himself took up the challenge
“The Fate of the Spark Battle” is the a glorious episode that portrays how easily Kai and Rei work together and the feelings they hold for each other. This is the battle that best displays Kai’s want for Rei’s happiness. Before his battle with Dunga, Kai looks down at Rei who is looking back as well.
Rei: Kai…
Kai: I gotta do this for Rei. I got to win Driger back. It’s time!
Soon, Kai is fighting against both Dunga and another member of the Saint Shields by the name Josuf. He is barely holding his own, keeping in mind that a loss would not be acceptable. Before anyone can stop him, Rei jumps into battle with a fire in his eyes. Even being heavily handicapped- as he is the only one without a bitbeast- Rei risks his safety in order to aid Kai in an unjust two-against-one battle.
This is yet another example of the relationship between the two. Constantly throughout the series, both Kai and Rei show their concern and care for each other no matter what the circumstances. These “hints” are in doses that are neither largely hindering to the imagination of other fandoms nor too small to be unnoticed and appreciated.
Shinneth, a devoted Kai x Rei fan, says “I think Kai/Rei's just a pairing that doesn't NEED a zillion hints crammed down your throat in order for you to accept it as a plausible couple. […] It's such a proud pairing, it doesn't NEED blatant hints in order to be cool.”
In the end, when Kai and Rei pull out as the winner, they stare at each other a second time with smiles on their faces. Together they win.
Kai: Sometimes the power of concentration can work miracles, and I think I just saw one. Nice job.
Rei: Thanks, Kai.
Not only does Kai compliment Rei on his sheer force of will and honour, but he also shows faint awe at the fire and passion Rei holds. The use of the euphonious word “miracles” shows his admiration effectively.
“I think VForce also proved that Kai is pretty fascinated with Rei's determination, too,” says Shinneth in much more coherent wording. “That was also evident at the first season's end, but by VForce I think Kai wouldn't have been so impressed with Rei's willingness to go on despite the odds being against him if he thought he could easily do the same or better than Rei in the aspect.”
The teamwork between Kai and Rei is yet again emphasized during the final tournament, when the head chair of the Beyblade Battle Association announces that the World Tournament would be fought in teams of two. The BBA is caught in a dilemma and rely on compatibility and astrology books for help on who should team up with whom. There are six possible combinations of which Kai and Rei are officially announced as the most compatible.
During the semi-finals, Rei is up against yet another antagonist team—a team that also holds the power to capture the sacred spirits. Just before his battle, with blazing motivation from his past experiences from bitbeast loss, Rei thinks:
Rei: If I give up now, that means they can steal Kai’s bitbeast
like they did mine! There’s no way I can let that happen. Let’s do this,
Driger!
It is blatantly obvious that Kai and Rei do not want the other to suffer in any way. Kai wants to win Driger back from the Saint Shields; Rei does not want Kai to lose Dranzer in the first place. They strive to give their all, ignoring any and all disadvantages, hoping that they can come out as victor.
Whether out of friendship or more intimate feelings, one cannot deny the mutual feelings between the two. Especially since Kai never really shows that kind of faith or affection towards anyone but Rei in all three series.
G-Revolution
This was a disappointing series for the “KaRe” fans. The series returned to a similar pattern to the first- namely tournament after tournament after tournament.
However, this series bought about the break up of Team BBA. This of course, was unfortunate for followers of the pairing, however we were pleasantly surprised to find that all hope was not lost.
Despite being on different teams, Rei once again showed that he has a great amount of insight to Kai’s personality. At several points in the series, Rei is the first –and only- person to stand up and explain why Kai is acting in a specific way. He showed how in tune he was with Kai when he met up with him on Ulruru (Ayers Rock) without them planning it. They then spent several hours together, alone in each others company.
Of course, in episode twenty three, the inevitable struck: Kai vs Rei.
Their battle was an entire episode dedicated to them. Rei and Kai quickly revealed that they worked very much in sync, exchanging blows with precision and perfect timing, revealing that they were very much equals.
The battle took its toll. Rei was briefly knocked unconscious. Several times, characters stated that the battle was intense- unlike previous ex-team-mate face offs, which had until then, been a light-hearted affair. Both were determined to win and gave it everything that they had, desperate to prove themselves to one another. Kai however struck the finishing blow, using his newest move to finish Rei off (and, on a side note to take his hair out. We are pleased with this. We all know that Rei is prettier with his hair down. The fact that Kai did it says a lot!)
Most noteworthy though, is Kai’s expression when he did the finishing move and walked away from Rei. It is an expression seen on his face all but three times- an expression he uses (and most of the anime world uses) when he’s devastated. Rei, dazed and supported by his friend Lai, sent Kai a warm smile and wished him the best. Yet despite this, Kai remained with his mouth twisted bitterly, and his hair covering his eyes.
This inevitably shows that he was torn inside over his victory. As he walked away, he shortly after staggered and collapsed against the wall, breathing heavily, and thinking to himself: ‘That was far too close. Rei… you were an excellent opponent.’ Before he gathered his strength and staggered off.
The rest of G-Revolution concentrated mainly on the main character, thus taking most of the focus away from Rei, or Kai.
Final summary:
KaixRei is a beautifully straightforward pairing. In a series where there are no ‘canon’ couples, KaixRei is an honest alternative and the closest thing –hints wise- to a proper relationship.
It is hard to explain exactly why ‘KaRe’ is the biggest pairing in Beyblade (even with G-Revolution). Some like it because they are the only two bishounen on the team. Most of us however, love it because it works. Regardless of ‘canon’ or not, Kai and Rei undeniably share a certain dynamic between them. They share a great amount of understanding between them and their personalities compliment one another, balancing them out very well and making them comfortable with each other- whether as friends, team-mates or lovers, it is irrefutable that they are extremely comfortable with one another.
KaixRei is loved around the world; it even catches the attention of non-yaoi fans. I have seen many Original Character fictions in which Kai and Rei are a couple. Additionally I have seen many ‘Rei is a girl’ fictions in which Kai and Rei are together. The latter I find quite offensive, but it is evidence that even non- yaoi fans love the idea of them being a couple, so they just change one of their anatomies.
All I can say is that “KaRe” enjoys a deeply loyal fandom, ranging in age and in nationality.
And, though many dislike the idea that it is so ‘popular’, personally I say; It’s popular for a reason.
