"You Smell like Death"
The Greg/Sara Essay

As labrat blossoms into CSI, mere acquaintance blossoms into friendship. In a nutshell, this describes Sara Sidle and Greg Sanders' relationship. Five long years it has taken for them to become real friends, and we have been given hints that say there might be something more than friendship there. In this essay, I shall describe their arduous journey, and what may lie ahead for the pair.

"You made my pickle into a light bulb?"

Sara Sidle was born near San Francisco and raised by two ex-hippies who ran a bed and breakfast. As a child, Sara was always intelligent and curious, probably too much for her own good. Her parents always had a very relaxed and laid-back approach to life and its difficulties, while Sara was constantly well-behaved and even tried to convince them to better their bed and breakfast to make it a franchise, but they disagreed, and wanted to keep their establishment small.

The girl's main problem with fitting in was relating to people. Because of her intelligence and introverted nature, most of the children at school either resented or ignored her. Sara's lack of understanding of socializing with people continued to haunt her throughout the rest of her life.

Sara finally found her niche at eighteen, when she was accepted to and began studying at Harvard University. She studied hard, and started going to parties, and even managed to date a few people. They were the best four years of her life. We must presume this is approximately when Sara started drinking, mainly to relieve stress levels of completing papers on time. Sara attended graduated school with a degree in theoretical physics before taking classes in forensic science at the coroner's office in San Francisco. Somewhere along the line, she met Gil Grissom, who was lecturing in one of her classes. He later hired her to work at his criminology lab in Las Vegas, where she continues to work today.

Sara is still quite introverted - likely due to the fact that her mother killed her father - and in order to avoid people, she takes refuge in her work. Partly to rebel against her parents, and partly to escape what she may find out about herself if she ever stopped working, Sara is probably the hardest worker at the CSI lab.

"My grandfather got tossed from Norway for getting my grandmother pregnant before they got married."

We know less about the history of Greg Sanders than we do about Sara, but what we do know gives us enough for a basic outline.

Greg has always wanted to be a scientist, ever since he got an amateur chemistry set at age seven. He was taunted and teased about his goal, with peers saying that science was for the reclusive, dateless geeks. Greg, however, continued in his pursuit of chemistry, starting with joining the Science Club in high school, and majoring in Chemistry in college.

While in school, Greg managed to remain well-liked, despite being teased about liking science. He was athletic and participated in many sports, studied hard, flirted with and dated (presumably) many girls, and knew more about computers than many of his teachers. Apparently, Greg studied more and participated in athletics less during college.

Baldness is a trait that runs through Greg's (Norwegian) family, on the mother's side. Greg's grandfather – Papa Olaf – suffered from baldness at age sixteen, but Greg claims he's safe from the same fate.

Either Greg did a lot of expensive drinking in college, or was brought up by parents that cooked a lot, because the boy definitely knows his fine wines. We do know, however, that Greg must have been brought up well, because he acts as quite the gentleman, which will be explained further in a little while.

A lot of what we know about Greg we learned from fragments of conversation, mostly with Grissom. We know he likes classic literature, but only if it has blood and death in it. He also still surfs and scuba dives, which isn't a terribly odd thing to be interested in, especially if Greg was raised on the coast of California. He likes Marilyn Manson and has a coin collection; also indicative of his interest in history. He had five years of orthodontia; the works: braces, palate expander (ouch), retainers, and headgear.

Greg also enjoys history, but his major interest in history is scientific breakthroughs. His one big hope for his life is to take credit for a breakthrough, maybe a new theory or element for the periodic table. A date with Sara wouldn't hurt, though.

Greg was originally meant to be a one-off character, appearing as a guest in the first episode. However, Greg turned into a recurring character, and finally a main character.

Perhaps the biggest event in Greg's life happened at the end of the third season, when he was caught in the explosion during "Play With Fire." His hands shook for a long time, and he still has trouble being around arson victims.

"Let me tell you, this girl has got some fine epithelials."

Before Season 5 began, most people would take a look at a fic that read "Greg/Sara," and think: "where'd that come from?" Now, however, it is becoming a favorite pairing among fanfiction writers.

In SEASON 1, Greg and Sara met for the first time in the second episode. Or, at least, that's what we're meant to assume. We never actually got to see them be introduced. Sara mainly seems to consider Greg as that annoying younger brother figure we all knew once upon a time. Greg just flirts with Sara like there's no tomorrow. These two interact very little in the first few seasons, but what we do get is gold.

One of my favorite scenes from SEASON 2 is from "Bully for You," when Sara's boyfriend has just run away from her the morgue. Greg walks past her, stops, turns around, and says: "You smell like death."

"I've heard." She responds sharply.

Greg starts on his way again. Stops once more and turns around. "You know, a real man wouldn't mind."

In the moments after that, we see Sara look back and smile a bit; she'd responded to Greg in a way we hadn't seen yet. We could definitely tell she was grateful for what he had said.

SEASON 3 provides us with very little in the way of Greg and Sara interacting in any particular way, but Sara seems a little more tolerant of Greg, and starts teaching him things about CSI training. In the episode "Revenge is Best Served Cold," Greg confronts Sara fairly directly about his feelings for her, when he asks her about Hank, her paramedic boyfriend. He asks what Hank has that Greg himself doesn't have, and Sara just grins and avoids the question by reading aloud the tox results of a body. Even though this isn't really much, it shows that Greg still fancies Sara, and wants her to know about it.

In SEASON 4, we really aren't given too much with Greg/Sara interaction, but Greg and Sara seem to be much more relaxed around each other, and Sara takes Greg's flirting with stride, and even flirts back a little bit.

SEASON 5. Here's where their relationship really starts to grow at top speed. Thus far, we've seen that Greg and Sara have become tentative friends, but in the fifth season, they grow much closer. We see, when they're working on cases, they tend to finish each other's sentences, and share knowing looks.

In "4x4" Greg and Sara are discussing the death of a bodybuilder, when Greg starts flexing his muscles in a mirror, thinking Sara can't see him. She then says something about the element of surprise, and Greg rushes into a casual-looking position, which makes him look quite silly. Sara looks around and grins at him, letting him know she saw his embarrassing ego moment.

Also in "4x4," Greg and Sara have to be decontaminated outside the crime scene. Both stripped of their clothing and surrounded by men in Hazmat suits, Greg keeps his eyes squeezed shut, while Sara sneaks a peek at what Greg looks like, deflowered. Later, we see them discussing what happened, only from the perspective of Grissom. Greg and Sara walk down the hall in scrubs, and Greg says "Sara, I just want you to know that when we were in the shower, I didn't see...anything."

Sara responds with an amused, "Really? Gosh, I saw everything." We're treated to a shocked expression from Grissom after this.

In "Nesting Dolls," right after Sara gets suspended for yelling at Catherine when Sara's told off for getting attached to a case, Greg approaches Catherine and tries to defend Sara. This is a turning point for Greg, as he was very close to Catherine, but is now willing to risk her friendship in order to protect and/or help Sara.

Also connected to Sara and Catherine's falling out, is a conversation between Greg and Sara in "Unbearable." Greg and Sara are working together on a case, when Greg says, "I don't mean to pry, but...want to talk about what happened with you and Ecklie?"

"Not really."

Greg tries another tactic. "I don't know if you know this about me, but...I'm a good listener."

Sara gives him a slightly exasperated, slightly amused look, and lets it out. "I blew up at Ecklie. It was very unprofessional, and very satisfying. And now we're moving on. Thanks for asking."

This is also a turning point for Sara; she finally opens up to Greg, something we haven't seen yet. Sara seems genuinely happy to be able to open up to him, and Greg seems content now with just being her friend, and helping with her problems. This is where we see that they have become true friends, and where Sara might be seeing him in a different light. We're given more of this prospect at the end of “Who Shot Sherlock,” when we just see them sharing a happy moment and toasting to Greg's success at becoming a full-fledged CSI.

"You infected me with mildew?"

I choose to ship Greg/Sara because they are a very continuous relationship in the show. They, in my mind, have the potential to become something more than friends, and even if they don't, their interactions are more than enough for fanfiction writers. Greg/Sara is the true tale of how good things come with time, and of how you shouldn't give up, because eventually, you will find happiness. As much happiness as you can get, working with dead bodies. And Sara needs to lighten up.

"I'm like a sponge: I just absorb information."

I started watching CSI way back in the first season, a short time after it started airing. Mainly because my parents watched, but I soon became addicted to the show. I always like Greg, the "funny one," and I've always had a quirk for odd pairings. I think I thought Sara needed some sunshine in her life, and that Greg could give her that happiness.

Greg/Sara has a large-ish fanfiction base, and some of it's good fic, some of it's poorly written. But the good fic I've found, is wonderful. A lot of authors (like myself) insert character quirks and traits that continue throughout their fic or series of fic, and that kind of continuity is always nice. The Greg/Sara fans are generally very nice, and aren't rampaging fans who think it's the only OTP (One True Pairing) out there. It's a welcoming atmosphere.

Very nice! I really like what you've written about them and there were indeed a bunch of cute Greg/Sara scenes in season five. I can't wait for the next one. Anyway, I've added it to my memories.

I enjoyed reading that. I have been a Sara/Greg shipper back in S3 (where people go "Why does she ship that?") since my first real episode of CSI was "Revenge is best served cold" and I fell in love with them.

I also would like to highly recommend [livejournal.com profile] slynn6776's stories, especially the "Happy" series for excellent Sandle fanfiction.

Anyway, it's always a pleasure saying hello to a fellow Sara/Greg fan.

I loved reading all of your Greg/Sara moments, I forgot there were so many. One of my favorites, though, is the one in the bus episode (where Greg freezes when the bus driver starts coughing up blood his first time in the field). Back in the lab as Sara is waiting for her results, she watches Greg (who looks adorably depressed) for a minute, and then says "Greg? You're really good at what you do." He doesn't say anything back, but you can tell it makes him feel better, especially because it's *Sara* saying it.

Good job on this manifesto, I hope you sign up for another one.

This is a wonderful overview on Sara/Greg which I've been a fan of since the early years.

There is also a Sara/Greg community called [livejournal.com profile] sarangreg

That was fantastic!

We do know, however, that Greg must have been brought up well, because he acts as quite the gentleman, which will be explained further in a little while.

Where was this explained further though?

I just love this pairing. It *really* started for me this spring with 4x4, and over this summer, it's become rather big for me. :D Thank you for doing this for all the Sara/Greg shippers out there! Yay!

Ah yes. I guess I was just expecting/hoping for more. :P I've always been a big fan of Greg's and his interactions with Sara in season four and five have gotten me all a-squee. I especially loved "Feeling the Heat" when he was explaining to Sara and Nick about the "make out" spots of Tequila and Sunset Coves. When she says "And how would you know?" he responds with "A gentleman never tells." and when he's run out of the room, he makes the gesture with his hand and mouths the words "Call me" to Sara. TOO CUTE!

Okay ... I thnk about this too much. XD

But thanks anyways. :D
