it's just us
an albus severus potter/scorpius malfoy manifesto

Hello there. You are reading this because you know of the Harry Potter fandom, and, extensively, about their children (well, if you've read Deathly Hallows at least - and I assure you that if you know/read Harry Potter but you haven't read Deathly Hallows, it's probably best if you do before you do anything fandom related), who I am here to talk about. Specifically about the children of our two favorite rivals, Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy.

Albus Severus and Scorpius aren't really touched upon in the books. Obviously. Since they only appear in the infamous epilogue (which I personally liked, thank you very much. But we won't get into our personal preferences here.) I think that there are a few things that we can assume about their personalities, in dissecting their relationships (?) and, well, other stuff.
ALBUS SEVERUS POTTER
was probably born between fall of 2005 and fall of 2006 to be starting Hogwarts in 2017. He has an older brother named James Sirius, a younger sister named Lily Luna, and is the son of Harry James Potter and Ginevra Molly Potter née Weasley. He has dark, most likely black hair ("[Scorpius] resembled Draco as much as Albus resembled Harry," (DH p. 753) so we can infer that both boys resembled their fathers very much) and green eyes, as "of Harry's three children, Albus had inherited Lily's eyes." (DH p. 758) He's rather thin, most likely inherited from Harry. ("... watching his son's thin face, already ablaze with excitement." (DH p. 759) Albus either likes to be or is just generally called 'Al' (exemplified in the DH epilogue, in which all dialogue mentioning him has him referred to as 'Al'), and he also has an owl, as there had been cage on top of his trolley when he and his family had arrived at King's Cross.
Personality-wise, Albus can be rather insecure. He had protested against his brother's taunts of him being in Slytherin, and rather indignantly at that ("I won't! I won't be in Slytherin!"). From this it can be concluded that he probably doesn't have the greatest viewpoint of Slytherin - although that may be because he had come from an entirely Gryffindor family - but the fact that he cares about what House he will be in says something about his House pride: that he cares about his House, and will want to live up to it. Additionally, "'You'll write to me, won't you?" Albus asked his parents immediately, capitalizing on the momentary absence of his brother," indicates two things. First, Albus relies on his parents very much, probably a result of Harry's neglect as a child and wanting none of it to get to his own son, and also as influence from Ginny, who had been doted on by her own mother; the combination of the two being very loving parents. Second of all, the fact that Albus "capitalized" on the momentary absence of his brother implies that, well, James must probably tease him quite often (most likely in a friendly manner, considering he had "caught his mother's eye and fell silent" and sent Al a "cocky look" rather than being sneering or menacing) and that Albus was somewhat used to it.
Even more so, Albus saying, "Not every day..." (when referring to Harry and Ginny sending him letters) and "James says most people only get letters from home about once a month," implies that Albus listens and cares to what his brother says - about school at least - and he also cares about his image/reputation and doesn't want to receive an excess amount of letters as much as he cares about his parents. He... also may not know about his father's fame (though this is not said explicitly) as he had demanded, "Why are they all staring?" (DH p. 759) when everyone saw Harry Potter, the great Boy Who Lived And Lived Then Died And Lived Again.
Building on Albus's insecurities as mentioned up above, he "winced [when going through Platform 9 3/4], but no collision came..." indicates a little bit of Albus's timidness and doubt of himself. Also, he exclaims, "I thought they were invisible? You said they were invisible!" (DH p. 757) which indicates that Albus might be too trusting of what James says to him and that he's probably rather afraid of things he doesn't know about - which is a common fear in most people. Still, this does say much about his character.
Albus also may be a little bit of a troublemaker; Harry had said, "No... you and Al will share a room only when I want the house demolished" (DH p. 757) when referring to James. Surely this either meant that either James and Albus got into enough arguments to bring the whole roof down, or that they could get into a lot of mischief together - probably the latter, seeing as they're both boys and James had been "enthusiastic" when offering, "I don't mind sharing with Al--Teddy could have my room!" So Albus definitely has some sort of troublemaking side.
Albus is seen to be rather close with Rose Weasley, his cousin, as he had "asked anxiously" where the Weasleys were when on the platform, and then "sound[ed] immensely relieved" when he saw them as Rose "beamed at him" - so Albus's entire family happens to be rather close; I like to think of Rose as Albus's 'Hermione', though probably with a bit more outgoingness because of her father. Albus's relationship with Lily Luna and Hugo aren't very highlighted, although the relationship between those two seems to be rather close ("Lily and Hugo laughed..." (DH p. 755) "Back on the platform, they found Lily and Hugo, ROse's younger brother, having an animated discussion... (DH p. 755)), so it looks as if the family relationships tend to be based on age.
"'Bye, Al," said Harry as his son hugged him. 'Don't forget Hagrid's invited you to tea next Friday. Don't mess with Peeves. Don't duel anyone till you've learned how. And don't let James wind you up.'" (DH p. 758) - Clearly, it seems as though Albus is much closer with his father than he is with Ginny - though she definitely loves him all the same - but the necessity of this advice seems to come personally from Harry. So apparently Albus is already friends with Hagrid; perhaps some things could be said about Albus's possible troublemaking tendencies with Harry's warnings about Peeves and dueling (although this may just be general advice); and it's obvious, as stated before, that Albus still cares about what his brother says about him very much even though James is seen to be a bit of an overbearing, teasing older brother - whether it's a result of just siblingship or family behavioral tendencies, we'll never know.
And now, DISSECTING THE NAME AND DETERMINING THE HOUSE.
Many people have already realized Albus's initials are ASP - which happens to be a type of snake, an asp snake. This may or may not be a reference as to what House Albus will end up being, as it happens to be a great concern of his, but I like to think it does; either that, or it's a very strange coincidence. There are many different portrayals of Albus Severus in fandom - as a Gryffindor, as a Hufflepuff, as a Ravenclaw, and as a Slytherin - but I wouldn't be telling the truth if I said that he's not much of a Slytherin. In fact, most of fandom seems to put him as a Slytherin more than anything else - and if it matters, I personally agree.
His Gryffindorish and Hufflepuffish traits can easily be detected in how he's not extremely confident, and he seems friendly enough (at least, to his family); and his parents and his parents' parents and probably the entire Weasley and most of the Potter clan were probably Gryffindors. Albus could possibly be a Ravenclaw - there's no ruling that out. But the fact that James had said, "He might be in Slyth[erin]" (DH p 754) and that Albus merely said, "I won't!" merely as a defense mechanism but not denying the possibility means that both brothers must have realized that Albus would have some Slytherin traits to have his arse landed in that house. Also, it's believed that either Albus had considered his father's words about Slytherin not being an awful house (well, he said that Severus was the bravest man he ever knew and he was in Slytherin - both a compliment to Slytherins, and also indicating that the 'bravery/intelligence/ambition/fairness' stereotypes to the Houses don't actually matter) and not minding if he got in, or that Harry was wrong and that the Sorting Hat puts you where you're best and it just so happened that Harry could have fit in with both Slytherin and Gryffindor equally. And since Albus is most like Harry in appearances, it's probably likely that he's most like Harry personality-wise, as well; which is another reason why Albus-being-in-Slytherin happens to be (most) fanon.
SCORPIUS HYPERION MALFOY
was also most likely born between fall of 2005 and fall of 2006, even though it's not stated; but it can be assumed, with the way that Harry, Ginny, Ron and Hermione had never seen him before until it was Albus's first year to Hogwarts (and James was older, so if Scorpius wasn't in Albus's and Rose's year, they must have seen him before.) His parents are Draco Lucius Malfoy and Astoria Malfoy née Greengrass, and appears to be an only child. There's little that can be said about Scorpius, canon-wise, seeing as he was only mentioned briefly - but we'll make with what we have.
"The new boy resembled Draco as much as Albus resembled Harry."
Which probably means that he's relatively pointy (figuratively, but physically speaking?), has sleek, white-blond hair and cool grey eyes - as this is generally what Draco looks like, as well. And if we go with the idea that appearance resemblance also indicates personality resemblance, then Scorpius might have plenty of Draco's personality in him as well (assume what you can), though JKR says that Scorpius "would be an improvement on his father"... so he's probably that much of a prat. It's also assumed that he's fairly intelligent - Ron had told Rose to "beat him in every test" so he's probably worth the competition. (Additionally, Draco's also very smart, because in CoS he was complaining about Hermione getting better grades than him.) This is probably the major reason why fanon depicts him as being a Ravenclaw - which is rather believable, though, again with the family thing, since both the Greengrasses and the Malfoys (and the Blacks! In reference to Draco's mother) were mostly in Slytherin, there is no doubt that he could possibly be a Slytherin as well - not just from the family, but from the characteristics inherited from the family which could affect this.
The rest of Scorpius's personality is generally up to reader assumption and interpretation. However, most people are probably aware that 'Scorpius' happens to be a derivative of the constellation Scorpio (which may or may not say something about his birthday, although no one knows for sure (except for maybe JKR)), and Scorpio happens to have qualities for Scorpios, as most astrological signs do.
More on Scorpios can be seen here
I like to believe that this applies to Scorpius, because I believe in symbolism and such things; regardless, this sort of personality seems to give off a Slytherin-ish feel to me. Again, most of the new cast is entirely up for interpretation to the reader, but things like this should be considered - and they can be quite important.

It's because they're the sons of their fathers, right? The offspring of probably the most popular pairing in Harry Potter fandom...
Well yes. I suppose there is that, and the reason for the intrigue to this pairing. It'd be interesting what would happen to the children of the biggest rivals Hogwarts has seen for a while (i.e. Harry and Draco). If they'd become friends. If they'd become best friends. If they wouldn't be too aware of each other. If they'd hate each other. All of which, by the way, I've seen before in fanfiction - so there's quite a variety to how this pairing is portrayed, probably because there's not too much fic out there, anyways.
There's also the idea that, no, they are not their fathers. They are completely and entirely different people, and while they may look like their fathers and have a few similar traits, there's just something intriguing about the pairing. Which is completely true. A new cast has been introduced to us, and we have no idea what's going to happen to them - hopefully, they'll just be normal kids going to a magic school, and not have crazy shit going on like Harry and his generation did. There are plenty of well-liked next-generation pairings, including Teddy/James, Teddy/Victoire, Scorpius/Rose, Scorpius/James and Scorpius/Lily. (Fandom really likes Scorpius, apparently.) So why AS/S? Because, well, why not? They could happen, right? Who knows who'll end up with who in the next generation? AS/S could be canon, as far as we know. (And I would totally love JKR if she said they were, because her word is God's word, obviously.)
But anyways. Enough of canon. We're getting to fanon now.

As stated plenty of times before, Scorpius and Albus are portrayed in a number of ways - but the most common characteristics of each of them, individually, is that Scorpius can be a bit reserved (emotionally and/or expressively) and that Albus can be a bit tactless (inherited from Harry, no doubt.)
As for fanon, what I've seen a lot of times is that within the first few weeks of first year at Hogwarts, Albus and Scorpius are best friends. Or, eventually, when the time calls for it, they'll become best friends, whether it's a few months or a few years after that. Regardless, fans see that Scorpius and Albus would get along rather well (either now or in time) - an interesting, if not somewhat realistic (imo, at least!) prospect.
You can probably tell I'm being very vague here.
Regardless, fandom has birthed quite an impressive amount of AS/S fanfiction - most of which I've read - as well as fanart (most of which I've seen). So instead of blabbering along here like I know what I'm talking about, I will list some pretty awesome AS/S fanfiction and provide some commentary and meta to their relationship in the story, further connecting it with this pimp post (oh, I'm so cool)
FANFICTION
This is a list of fanfiction, if the header didn't make it obvious enough. This is not a full list of all AS/S fanfiction, nor is it a recommendations list - but rather, AS/S stories in which the relationship is interesting, and also stories are pretty decent and aren't a bad read as well. :D ♥ (All of these are complete, contain NO Draco/Harry, and Albus and Scorpius get together in the end. 'Nothing' means they're neither friends nor enemies before getting together.)

an albus severus potter/scorpius malfoy manifesto

Hello there. You are reading this because you know of the Harry Potter fandom, and, extensively, about their children (well, if you've read Deathly Hallows at least - and I assure you that if you know/read Harry Potter but you haven't read Deathly Hallows, it's probably best if you do before you do anything fandom related), who I am here to talk about. Specifically about the children of our two favorite rivals, Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy.

the pairing

(DH p.
And since Albus is most like Harry in appearances, it's probably likely that he's most like Harry personality-wise, as well; which is another reason why Albus-being-in-Slytherin happens to be (most) fanon.
SCORPIUS HYPERION MALFOY

Scorpio is the astrology sign of extremes and intensity. Scorpios are very deep, intense people, there is always more then meets the eye. They present a cool, detached and unemotional air to the world yet lying underneath is tremendous power, extreme strength, intense passion and a strong will and a persistent drive. Scorpios have a very penetrative mind, do not be surprised if they ask questions, they are trying to delve deeper and figure things out and survey the situation. They always want to know why, where and any other possible detail they can possibly know. Scorpio's are very weary of the games that other people try to play and they are very aware of it. Scorpios tend to dominate and control anyone that lets them, or anyone that they find weak. The person that a Scorpio respects and holds close to them is treated with amazing kindness, loyalty and generosity. On the outside, a Scorpio has great secretiveness and mystery. This magnetically draws people to them. They are known to be controlling and too ambitious but only because they need control for this makes them feel safe.
More on Scorpios can be seen here
I like to believe that this applies to Scorpius, because I believe in symbolism and such things; regardless, this sort of personality seems to give off a Slytherin-ish feel to me. Again, most of the new cast is entirely up for interpretation to the reader, but things like this should be considered - and they can be quite important.

so, why as/s?
It's because they're the sons of their fathers, right? The offspring of probably the most popular pairing in Harry Potter fandom...

We're getting to fanon now.

the words (and arts) of the fans

I'd say that there's a reason for people to ship Albus Severus/Scorpius, except there really isn't (any "proof", that is) - but that's why we're here! Why you're here! Why we're all here! To ship AS/S and spread the love. SO GO DO IT ♥
None of the fanart here belongs to me. I don't own Harry Potter or anything else; they belong to JKR and Warner Bros.
