Title: Defying Destiny
Author: [livejournal.com profile] svgurl
Fandom: Smallville
Pairing: Clark Kent/Oliver Queen
Spoilers: all seasons (mostly 6-10)
Word Count: ~4500
Notes: There are quite a few pictures. Just so you're warned.

The Show

Smallville is a television series that airs on the CW network about a young Clark Kent, showing his life in Smallville, and the journey he takes to become Superman, as well as the people who he meets along the way, who shape his decisions and actions.

The Characters:

Clark Kent is the hero of the show. He’s trying to find his place in world, made more difficult by the discovery he is an alien in the first episode. He has many abilities, including strength, speed, and invulnerability, with an exception to the meteor rocks. During the course of the series, he develops more abilities through various scenarios. He uses these abilities to help those in danger. Clark has a strong set of morals and likes to find the best in people. Though he usually prefers to fly solo, he inspires those around him, with his kind heart and good spirit and is a natural leader.

Oliver Queen is a character that shows up in the 6th season. He’s a billionaire- wealthy, charming, and handsome. Though he is only in 7 episodes, he makes quite an impact, and returns the following season for one episode, and then becomes a series regular in season 8. Though rich and successful, Oliver also wants to help people and is a hero in his own right, protecting the streets with his archery skills as Green Arrow. Oliver believes in the idea that the ends justifies the means and often clashes with Clark because of it. Nevertheless, he is there for the people he cares about, good or bad, and is willing to make sacrifices for "the greater good". Often times, he is his own worst enemy and faces many a trial because of it.

Canon:

6.04 ‘Arrow’

"You’re Clark Kent?”
”You must be Oliver Queen.”

From their first handshake in 6.04 ‘Arrow’, there was a connection. Clark went to Oliver’s penthouse in search for Lois, and Oliver hadn’t been expecting Clark to look like … well, Clark. Lois clearly described him as a bumbling, geeky farmboy and when he met him, he was greeted with a Greek God.

He was fascinated with Clark and Lois’s relationship, but more than that, throughout the course of the episode, he becomes very intrigued by Clark, especially after he learns that he has powers. Clark, on the other hand, doesn’t think much of Oliver, though confused at Oliver’s statement that he has feelings with Lois, but is definitely put off by Green Arrow’s methods.

After learning that Oliver is indeed Green Arrow, he’s not impressed but Oliver opens his eyes to the idea that the world is not as black and white as Clark would like to believe. In the end, they do learn from each other, because Green Arrow returns all the items he has stolen.

Clark even protects Oliver’s identity to both Lois and even Chloe, who is his best friend and knows the truth about him.

6.05 ‘Reunion’

Clark: “You know, making the wrong choices and living with the consquences- it’s not easy, is it?”
Oliver: “Speaking from experience, huh?”
Clark: “More than I’d like.”
Oliver: “You know, we all make bad choices, Clark. All we can do is hope to make the right ones in the future, right?”

In this episode, we learned about Ollie’s past and how he wasn’t the niceset guy when he was in school. To be frank, he was a bully, and the kid who’s accidental death was a result of Ollie’s behavior is seeing revenge.

Ollie reluctantly opens up to Clark about the truth when his school friends are murdered, knowing he may be next. At the end of the episode, they have a heart-to-heart in Clark’s barn.

They haven’t known each other very long, but there is already a bond. They’re both protecting secrets, not only their own but now each other’s. It’s a two way street.

6.07 ‘Rage’

Clark: “What made you come to your senses?”
Oliver: Actually, you did. This whole time, I just wanted to be like Clark Kent, you know? I wanted to, uh... I wanted to have the ability to bring justice to the world without having to worry about getting killed in the process. And then something occurred to me, and I realized that, uh...[Clears throat] Clark Kent would never take another man's life. I came within an inch of doing just that. I'm not even in your league.”
Clark: “Oliver, you do a lot of good in this world. You don't need to be indestructible to be a hero.”
Oliver: “Yeah. Well, you're right. You're right. Yeah. Um...I should be thankful for who I am, right, and the abilities that I have. I know that.”
Clark: “Me too.”

Oliver has been injecting himself with a drag that has healing properties. The side effect is that it makes him a lot angrier. He argues with Clark, expressing his frustrations at Clark not doing what Ollie thinks he should be doing, and reveals frustrations at not having any abilities of his own, therefore justifying the decisions he has to take to protect himself.

However, even after the fight, when Clark’s in the elevator, he uses his x-ray vision to check in on Oliver, because instinctively, he knows something is wrong. Throughout the episode, Clark defends both Green Arrow and Oliver, especially when Chloe thinks that Green Arrow murdered someone. Clark knows that Ollie’s morals are different than his own, but he is also confident enough in Oliver to know that there are lines he won’t cross.

Lex and Oliver, decked in his Green Arrow costume, shoot each other, and Lex does die but Clark brings him back with the same healing drug Oliver’d been using. They leave before being caught, but Ollie does see the error of his ways, evident by the look of regret on his face.

Clark even visits him, and that’s when Oliver admits how he just wanted to be more like Clark. That scene was big for both of them, because Oliver understood that not having powers doesn’t make him less of a hero, and Clark, who was having a tough Thanksgiving since it was the first one without his father, appreciated his own powers once more.

6. 10 ‘Hydro’

Oliver: “Think she suspects anything?”
Clark: “I think she’s a little preoccupied.”
Oliver: “Then it’s showtime.”

Lois finds evidence that Oliver is the Green Arrow, and she is conflicted. She goes to Clark, who initially dissuades her, but then, comes around, and says that they should create a plan to expose Oliver.

Except that Clark is revealed to be on Oliver’s side, working to protect his secret. Clark has known Lois a lot longer than he has known Ollie, but he understands what it means to keep a secret, and has had people investigating his, so he wouldn’t let Ollie’s secret get discovered, if Ollie wants to keep it hidden.

6.11 ‘Justice’

Oliver: “You'd be a major asset to the team.”
Clark: “I want to be a part of this, guys. I really do.”
Oliver: “But ...”
Clark: “That problem I told you about -- the one that I caused -- I have to take care of that first.”
Oliver: "This isn't the end of the story, Clark. This is just the beginning.”

This was Oliver’s final episode in season 6. After Bart Allen, a kid whose life Clark met in season 4, who can run even faster than Clark himself, gets caught during a mission, it is revealed that Ollie is not working alone as Green Arrow. No, he has recruited a team in the form of Bart, Victor and AC (all former guest stars).

Clark’s not amused at being left in the dark, and he argues with Ollie about what he’s doing, even almost blaming him for Bart being caught. When he learns more about their mission and hears Victor saying positive things about Ollie, he does seem relieved, because he wants to believe that Ollie is doing good.

However, after Chloe finds the facility Bart could be in, he goes off on his own and sends her in his place to see Oliver. When the schematics reveal that the facility has a place for meteor rocks, Chloe claims Clark is in trouble and Ollie does look worried.

In fact, Ollie is the one who saves Clark, who was stuck in the room full of meteor rocks. He specifically sends Victor on a different mission and puts himself in charge of finding/saving Clark.

At the end of the episode, Oliver does invite Clark along to join them on their mission, but Clark turns him down. Clark does seem like he wants to go and if the Zoners hadn’t been in the way, he might’ve. Ollie takes it as a ‘someday’, and they exchange a handshake and a smile, reminiscent of how they met, though things have changed a lot since then.

8.01 ‘Odyssey’

Clark: “What took you so long?”

‘Odyssey’ was a dream come true for Clark/Oliver shippers. It was the closest they’d ever get to hooking up. We open with Ollie desperately trying to find Clark, and even though the team wants to give up, because there are no leads on him, Oliver refuses, saying that Clark would never give up on them.

Oliver does end up tracking Clark down at a Russian Prison Camp and stages a fight, and tricks his captors into handing him over. Clark asks, ‘what took you so long’, which implies he always believed Oliver would come after him. There are very few people that Clark has that kind of confidence in.

In Oliver’s plane, they share a moment, Clark, who is wearing one of Oliver’s shirts, explaining how he ended up where he was. When Oliver says that Clark could’ve died, he looks saddened at the idea. They talk about Chloe, and Ollie reveals that she wasn’t arrested by the DDS, and may be in a facility in Montana. At Clark’s insistence, they change course.

At the facility, they argue, when Clark wants to split up and Ollie thinks they should stay together. They do part ways, and when they reunite, Oliver had already been captured by the same people who had Chloe. Those men shot a mind controlling substance into Oliver and told him to go find out Lex’s whereabouts at any cost. Oliver tries to find this information from Clark and when Clark is confused, and doesn’t give answers, Oliver ends up shooting him with two arrows, the second going through the heart.

That’s when he snaps out of the haze and seeing what he did, he’s horrified. Not only does he rush to Clark’s side but is practically in tears as he pleads for him to hold on. Of course all ends well, the hero being saved by another friend who makes an appearance.

Their final scene has Dinah and AC but Ollie is happy to see Clark, even teasing him (but also quite pleased) when Clark refers to them all as a team, including himself. They decide to stay low, but Clark and Oliver never stop keeping in touch.

8.03 ‘Toxic

Oliver: “Lionel Luthor killed my parents.”
Clark: “You figured that out from flight records? I mean, it was a plane crash.”
Oliver: “Yeah, it was a plane crash, and according to that, there were LuthorCorp employees on the maintenance lot.”
Clark: “And you think Lionel paid them to sabotage the plane?”
Oliver: “Did you know about this?”

Oliver’s poisoned in this episode and it’s a race against time to find the cure. Meanwhile, Ollie, who is unconscious, is flashing back to his past and how he met Tess Mercer, the acting CEO of LuthoCorp.

Clark doesn’t give up on Oliver. When it seems as if he showed up to the event drunk, he doesn’t believe it, because that’s not something he feels Oliver would do. He does eventually get his hands on the cure and shows up in the knick of time.

After he’s back on his feet, Oliver goes and talks to Tess, who hands him information that changes the course of his life. Clark finds him at a bar, and when he expresses concern, Ollie reveals that he has found proof that Lionel Luthor murdered his parents and the plane accident his parents died in wasn’t an accident after all, information that Clark learned a year prior.

It’s obvious Oliver feels betrayed when he figures out Clark has known, and is even more hurt/angry when Clark expresses that he was worried about how Ollie would react if he told him. Oliver seems to be just as frustrated with Clark, as he is about learning the truth. To be that angry and betrayed, a person has to really care about the one that who hurt them. Ollie storms off and Clark is left, looking as if he regrets his actions.

8.05 ‘Committed’

Oliver: “What are you two doing here?”
Lois: “Oliver, you didn't get the invitation yet?”
Oliver: “My invitation to what?”
Lois: “Tell him, cupcake.” [nudges Clark]
Clark: “Lois and I are... ...we're getting married.”
Oliver: “You're just full of surprises lately, aren't you, Clark?”
Lois: “I know, right? I mean, we've been friends for so long, but we just had this one magical night, and we couldn't deny our feelings any longer.”
Oliver: “Is this true?” [looking at Clark]
Clark: “I'm afraid so.”

Chloe and Jimmy have their engagement party and are kidnapped right after. Clark and Lois figure out that engaged couples are the ones that are disappearing and find the places that all the couples went to.

They pretend to be engaged, but at the jewelry store, they run into Oliver. He’s as shocked to see them as they are to see him. Since the jeweler is one of their suspects, they have to continue with the farce, telling Oliver they’re engaged. At first, he doesn’t believe it but when Lois shows him the ring she’s wearing, he gets it.

During that confrontation, Ollie keeps aiming his questions toward Clark. Though Lois tries to step in, it’s Clark Ollie’s focused on, despite the fact it was Lois that he dated.

8.07 ‘Identity’

Clark: “I'm glad you've finally come around.”
Oliver: “Clark, I understand, uh... why you didn't tell me about my parents' murder. You were afraid of how I'd take it. And it's -- it's fine. You were right. And once I found out, I'm pretty sure my parents wouldn't have been proud of how I reacted.”
Clark: “Oliver, I have no doubt that your parents would be proud of the person you've become.”

Oliver and Clark are still at odds in this episode, but when Jimmy discovers Clark’s secret, Clark goes to Ollie to help him cover it up. Though Oliver is on a partying streak, not really caring about the world, Clark manages to convince him.

In a reversal of what happened in ‘Hydro’, Oliver poses as Clark’s secret identity, and winds up having to actually save Jimmy. Yet that brings back his heroic side and when Clark goes to thank him, he finds out that Ollie’s reverted back to his old self.

Not only does Oliver forgive Clark, but he’s given up his partying ways and is off to meet the rest of his team. Clark assures Ollie that his parents would be proud of him and Ollie clearly appreciates the gesture. The two of them seem happier that their relationship is mended.

8.12 ‘Bulletproof’

Clark: “You know, for everything Danny's crew did wrong, I have to say... knowing there's always someone there who has your back... that kind of brotherhood can make you feel like you could do anything.”

J’onn got shot in this episode, and Clark goes undercover in the police department to find out about a potential corruption. Oliver and Clark disagree with each other, but everything works itself out, and Clark manages to convince a corrupt cop who is on the edge to change his ways. Ollie actually uses Clark and his beliefs to stop the guy (Danny) from killing him.

When they’re in J’onn’s hospital room, they talk, and when Clark speaks, Oliver is carefully watching him with a smile.

8.21 ‘Injustice’

Clark: “Thank you. I knew I could count on you.”
Oliver: “That’s never gonna change.”

Clark and Oliver’s relationship was rocky throughout most of the season, them arguing, usually resolving their problems by the end of the episode, but going through them all over again the next time they interact. It was a never ending cycle. Yet, when Clark needed something, he still trusted Oliver enough to ask for his help.

Though by the end of the episode, when Clark finds out that Oliver has a kryptonite ring and Oliver reveals that he was the one to kill Lex, their relationship takes a turn for the worse. Ollie insists that he’s not Clark’s enemy and Clark wonders aloud who Oliver is then. Potentially not being on the same side hurts them both.

9.04 ‘Echo’

Oliver: “Speak your mind, Clark.”
Clark: “I haven't been paying enough attention to everything. There's been danger all around me that I haven't seen... warning signs I haven't noticed... ...and people in need that I've neglected. I didn't realize how bad things are. I haven't been here for you. I'm sorry.”
Oliver: “Well, with all due respect, Clark, I'm not sure I'm worth your concern. You know, when I was reading that speech in there, when I decided to, uh... that speech wasn't just a laundry list of all my sins. It was... it was a fact sheet. Ever tell you how old I was when my parents died? 5. I never really knew them very well. Everything about my life is not really mine; it's theirs. I didn't earn it... and it's all a lie. You of all people know what it's like to wear a mask, right? That's all this is -- the Queen name, Green Arrow. Masks. And I just realized there's nothing underneath them.”’
Clark: “There is something behind those masks. You're just afraid to face it. You're not running away from who you are. You're running away from who you think you're becoming. But you don't have to face it alone. Just because you've given up on Oliver Queen doesn't mean I have."
Oliver: "Thank you."

Things just kept getting worse for Clark and Oliver, Clark distancing himself from humanity and returning while Oliver let his life spin out of control.

In this episode, Tess saves him and asks that he show up to a party to reassure the investors, as he has been neglecting the company. The party takes a different turn when Winslow Shaw, Oliver’s former employee who Ollie framed for Lex’s murder, wants revenge and demands that Ollie do as he say because Oliver’s standing on a bomb.

Clark, who went to the party when he learned Winslow was out of jail, locates the real bomb and saves the day. He talks to Oliver afterwards, who was attempted to kill himself after he made sure everyone was gone. It says a lot that, after everything, Clark still believes in Oliver so much. He knows the man that Ollie used to be and believes that he can be that man. Ollie was definitely moved by Clark’s confidence.

9.07 ‘Kandor’

Oliver: "Look, umm … I know you and I haven’t always seen eye to lately, but, uh … I got your back … always.”

Oliver was very supportive of Clark through this episode and that one sentence sums up how he really feels. He can acknowledge that he and Clark have their differences and have had a lot of problems but at the same time, Oliver will be there when Clark needs him.

9.20 ‘Sacrifice’

Oliver: “Yeah, all right, man, I got your back.”

Clark: “Then suit up. Check the mansion. Before Tess went off the grid, she got close to Zod. She may have left behind some intel. I have another lead I wanna run down on my own.”
Oliver: “Hey, Clark. You know, those Kandorians, they're not the only family you have here.”

Clark is determined to make peace with the Kandorians, wanting to have some sort of family on Earth and is at odds with Zod. He’s trying to convince them to come on his side and succeeds with a few. Oliver’s words and reassurance demonstrates how he can empathize with Clark’s loneliness, but also reminds him that he’s not as alone as he thinks he is. Ollie may be human, but he’s on Clark’s side- always.

The boys don’t have as many scenes alone at this point but ones like these show that it can be more about quality than quantity.

9.22 ‘Salvation’

Oliver: She's trying to be strong, you know? When your oldest friend leaves forever, there's really no way to say goodbye. That said, I think we both know there's someone else you need to see one last time.

Clark decides to use the Book of Rao to take the Kandorians, including Zod, away from Earth. However, leaving means never coming back to Earth, and Chloe walks away after he’s made the decision, without talking to him. Ollie stops Clark from going after her. He tries to come up with an explanation for Chloe’s hasty departure, but he’s also speaking from his own heart.

Though Ollie has the team, they almost act as siblings. Clark is one of the few people he can call his equal and saying goodbye is not easy for him either, though he’ll never admit it aloud. It’s implied.

10.04 ‘Homecoming’

Oliver: "Any calls?"
Secretary: "Where do you want to start? CNN, BBC ..."
Oliver: "No, I mean, any calls?"
Secretary: "Oh, umm, I'm sorry, sir. Mr. Kent hasn't left word."
Clark: "He's always so Oliver that I didn't know that he needed me."

At Clark’s high school reunion, Brainiac (who is now a good guy) shows up and leads Clark to see what he’s missing, and how he’s holding himself back. He shows him Oliver, who’s been facing criticism since he came out as Green Arrow, and hiding out from the world. Ollie is shown to be waiting for Clark to call, making Clark realize that Oliver does need him.

It really also demonstrates how much Clark’s opinion means to Ollie. They’ve fought, been on each other’s side, but Clark doesn’t usually ignore Ollie completely, especially when he’s made such a life-changing decision and it bothers him. Clark too is visibly affected by this new information. Brainiac too confirms that Clark should be by Ollie’s side, helping him be the hero he needs to be.

One of the final scenes, after Clark has learned his lessons, has Ollie in a press conference. At first, he’s faltering, but Clark shows up to support him, and then he gains confidence. He constantly looks up to meet Clark’s eyes, who continually gives him reassuring smiles or nods.

Separately, they’re good, but together, they’re clearly better.

Why I Ship Them

Clark/Oliver is a ship about equality, friendship, and having someone by your side when times get rough. They’re imperfectly perfect. Their relationship came out of nowhere, as they are both closer to other people in the comics.

Smallville created a relationship between them and it’s beautiful. Sometimes, it’s harsh and sometimes, it’s wonderful but it’s always intense and full of heat, as well as chemistry. There is no denying that these are two very good-looking men, who are even more perfect when standing next to each other.

What’s amazing about them is that they always come back to each other. They walk away yet they aren’t able to stay away. I love how much they truly do need the other one, though they don’t really say it out loud. It’s in their actions, it is in the underlying subtext of their words, and it’s in the way they look at each other.

Clark defends Oliver to other people and the vice versa is true. Ollie admires Clark, even when he’s berating him. When it comes down to it, they believe in each other.

When Clark met Oliver, he was older and more experience, ready to deal with someone like Oliver. Which is why they work out. For the most part, they don’t have secrets, and they are not afraid to tell each other what they think, good or bad.

Honestly, loyalty, chemistry, friendship … what more can you ask for?

I came to fandom because I saw the chemistry and potential way back in season 6. I was disappointed when I found out that there wasn’t that much fic for them, so I decided to make an LJ account and write my own. When I left fandom briefly, it was because I was so hurt by them at the end of ‘Doomsday’ but I came back, because not shipping them, not actively writing fanfic for them, is no longer a possibility.

Through thick or thin, I will ship them, and they will always be my true Smallville OTP.

The Fandom

Sadly, while Smallville fandom is large, the Clark/Oliver ship doesn’t have much support. Most of the Oliver fans prefer shipping him with the women of the show and the slashers still lean toward Clark/Lex.

There are some of us, who do see what a great pair they are and there is definitely fic for them, if you look.

Communities:

[livejournal.com profile] unforeseen_love is a community that is dedicated to the Clark/Oliver pairing.

[livejournal.com profile] ollieville is an Oliver Queen slash community, and there is a good amount of Clark/Oliver there.

Fanfic:

Clark/Oliver fic list- I created this list a while ago as a reference point. It hasn’t been updated recently but most Clark/Ollie fics are there. It’s organized by author.

Here are some stories I really enjoyed:

Apotheosis by [livejournal.com profile] ladybugkay- She’s seriously one of the best writers to ever write Clark/Oliver. This particular fic is amazing but so is her ‘Denial’ series.

Celebration by [livejournal.com profile] quiet__tiger- What I love about her is that her Clark and Oliver are such guys. It’s always very realistic (not to mention hot) and her oneshots are awesome. This might be my favorite but all of them are great.

La Fuga Dolce by [livejournal.com profile] boltgirl426- All her fic is good but this is my favorite. Her Clark and Oliver are very sweet. This story is a great combination of fluff, humor, romance, and has a good dose of sexy. The rest of her stories are listed in the Clark/Oliver list.

Let Me Hold On by [livejournal.com profile] goth_clark- She wrote a very hot oneshot, set in season 6. Ollie pays a visit to Clark and it turns into something more.

Seeing You Helps by [livejournal.com profile] morganichele- Very sweet take on a way Oliver could’ve returned. I like the way she writes both Clark and Oliver. It will put a smile on your face.

This Is Not The End by [livejournal.com profile] ashtakra- A brilliantly written fic, starting out with Ollie in trouble, Clark saving him and things taking off from there. There is also an equally awesome sequel.

What Lex Lost (And Never Knew) by [livejournal.com profile] phantisma- This is definitely a darker fic but it’s really good. Clark goes to Oliver for release and that’s what Oliver gives him. There’s even a sequel.
