Alice: This place. Where... what is it?
Hatter: Oh. Wonderland.
Alice: That’s a story in a kid’s book.
Hatter: Does this look like a kid’s story to you?

2009’s Alice mini-series is one of the Syfy channel’s original films and an adaption of Lewis Carroll’s Alice mythology. Syfy’s Alice takes the mythos of the Carroll stories and expands on it, offering a re-imagining of Wonderland and how it has changed since the adventures of the original ‘Alice of Legend’. The focus of the story is Alice Hamilton, a young woman with a missing father and a black belt in martial arts. She starts the story dating Jack Chase and taking him to meet her mother. After dinner Jack gives Alice a ring without explaining the significance and disappears. As Alice chases him down to return the ring she sees him abducted by a group of men and finds herself through the Looking Glass and in a modern Wonderland.

Hatter: There’s 5000 years of history here. Art, literature, law.
Rescued when the Queen of Hearts seized power.
[...]
Alice: Why does she want to destroy all this?
Hatter: Wisdom’s her biggest threat. She controls people with a quick fix.

Alice, like all other adaptations, takes the characters from Carroll’s stories and changes them to fit the story. In Alice, all of the characters are human, from the decks of cards to the Hatter and Dormouse, and yet they still retain what it is that makes them the characters from the original stories. The main characters in Alice, aside from Alice herself, are Hatter, the White Knight, Jack Chase/Heart, the Queen of Hearts and (to a lesser extent) the Carpenter. However, there are still many other characters (the Duchess, the White Rabbit and the Caterpillar, to name a few) that play an important role in the story.
It’s not only the character’s that differ from the original Carroll incarnations though, the world in which Alice finds herself is completely different from the kid’s story that viewers are accustomed to. Instead of being filled with colourful creatures and whimsical settings, Alice takes place is a world that somewhat mirrors our own, driven by the consumer market. In Alice that Queen of Hearts has built the Happy Heart’s Casino and her Suits run the White Rabbit organization, disappearing people from our world into theirs’. In Wonderland, humans (commonly referred to as Oysters) are placed in the Casino under a sort of trance, where the thrills they experienced are turned into elixirs for the Wonderland populace to buy so that they too can experience pure human emotion. From desire to excitement to serenity, these emotions are sold by the Queen to control the general population, and it’s resulted in an economy fuelled by addiction.

Charlie: Who are you?
Alice: I’m Alice.
Charlie: Alice? The Alice? The Alice?
Alice: No. Just Alice.

Alice Hamilton is different from the Alices that we’ve seen in other Wonderland adaptations. For starters, she’s a grown woman in her early 20’s, raised by her mother after her father abruptly disappeared when she was 10. She spends her free time searching for her missing father as well as teaching at a martial arts studio as a black belt. Even in this brief description we can see that this Alice will be different than the Alices of past adaptations. She’s adept, persistent and can take care of herself.
Alice arrives in Wonderland by accident, falling through the Looking Glass when she’s chasing the White Rabbit in an attempt to save Jack from what she believes to be a kidnapping. Even before this, during her conversation with the White Rabbit, Alice reveals herself to be resourceful, slipping the ring that Jack had given her onto her finger and letting the White Rabbit believe it was still in the box. This resourcefulness continues to arise throughout the miniseries, as she escapes from the Scarab, outsmarts the Queen’s prized assassin and even bargains with the Queen herself.
Alice is also assertive and brave, aware of what her goals are and how she needs to accomplish them, even if it means putting herself in danger.

Hatter: Do you know why they call me Hatter?
Alice: Because you wear a hat?
Hatter: No, because I’m always there when they pass the hat, so to speak. Philanthropy. Generosity. I mean, you can call it what you will. It’s who I am, and right now, looking at you there, there’s nothing I want more than to help you.

The Mad Hatter of Syfy’s Alice is distinctly less mad than any other incarnation of the character. Instead of an insane man who is solely interested in the continuation of his tea party, Hatter is an intelligent and capable character, running a Tea Shop, fuelling the Queen’s economy of instant gratification, and helping keep the Resistance running by providing food and information.
Hatter is Alice’s main guide and protector during her time in Wonderland and is constantly trying to get her back to her world in the safest way possible, even if it means that he is no longer safe in Wonderland.
From the moment Hatter is introduced he’s a character that you automatically want to trust, he’s charming, helpful and genuinely cares about the fate of his world. He also continues to chase after Alice, saving her from the Heart’s Casino and consistently trying to keep her away from danger.
However, Hatter is not merely the generous and caring character that he makes himself out to be. He’s also a businessman and opportunist, as seen in his dealings with Dodo, trying to get his ‘usual cut’ from the Resistance while helping Alice. This duality is a large part of Hatter’s character and is what shows his development throughout the film, as he changes from his opportunistic ways to openly fighting against the Queen of Hearts and the Suits, and this change is in large part thanks to Alice.

Alice: Who are you?
Hatter: A friend. I hope.

As the end couple of Syfy’s Alice, Alice and Hatter have a lot of canon and sub-textual evidence that makes the pairing work. As a result I’ve decided to focus on a few of their main scenes as well as some of the smaller moments instead of trying to include everything.

When Alice and Hatter first meet she is brought to his Tea Shop by Ratty who believes she’s the same Alice from Carroll’s children’s novels. Ratty is looking for payment from Hatter for finding her and bringing her to him, if not for the fact that she’s Alice than for the fact that she’s an Oyster. It is in this scene that Alice and Hatter’s relationship begins. While there are no specific lines of dialogue that really highlight their relationship at this point, their connection is instead shown through their reactions to each other. Hatter immediately wants to help Alice get back to her world even though doing so will put him in great danger and Alice, though unsure of Hatter, decides to trust him, putting her fate into his hands.
This is followed by a short scene of Alice and Hatter moving through the city. Alice has a very strong fear of heights and happens to look over the edge of a sidewalk (the city in Wonderland is over 80 stories off the ground) and freezes in fear. It is here that the possibility of a romantic relationship between Alice and Hatter truly begins as he takes her hand and leads her away from the edge, setting up a recurring theme of Hatter helping Alice get over her fear of heights.
Alice returns the favour during their meeting with Dodo. After things turn violent (because this is Tim Curry and things have to turn violent) Alice runs back for Hatter, who’d be stalling for time so that she could escape. It’s in these two moments that the characters begin to put their faith in one another and not long after, Hatter goes all in in terms of helping Alice, even deciding to return to her world now that his cover’s been blown.
Another small moment comes after they meet the White Knight (Charlie) and are headed back to his home with him. Alice and Hatter ride double, with Alice seated behind Hatter. While they ride there’s a short back-and-forth between the two, with Hatter noticeably flirting with Alice, saying that she could “just lean forward and put [her] arms around [his] waist and let [his] body take the weight” so that she’s more comfortable.
Shortly after this, Alice sets herself up to be caught by Mad March so she can get into the casino without telling Hatter or Charlie. As a result, both break into the casino to help rescue her. This is important because Hatter, despite his assurances that you don’t leave the casino, goes in after her anyway, forgetting about his own safety until they have escaped. At the casino they find Alice in the Truth Room, where Doctors Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum are toying with her. Here Alice must jump across a large pit to reach Hatter. This time she overcomes the possible fall with no trouble, jumping over to Hatter without hesitation. This is again reiterated as they escape off the casino roof by way of flamingos, though Alice does put up some fight here about flying Hatter reassures her much as he did earlier, telling her that he “wouldn’t let [her] do it if [he] didn’t think [she’d] be okay”.
Once safe Alice tells Hatter and Charlie that despite their daring rescue mission she has to return to the casino. Neither of them are happy about this and Hatter asks Alice to give him a few hours to talk to his remaining contact in the city, desperate for her to not return to the casino. His actions here show the progression that their relationship has had since their initial meeting because had this occurred earlier in the film, Hatter wouldn’t have been so desperate to stop Alice and Alice wouldn’t have stopped even if he was.
When Hatter returns he and Alice talk, Hatter reveals that he’s going to be fighting with the Resistance now and Alice that she was afraid he wouldn’t return and that she may get stuck in Wonderland. This is a large moment for the pair, as Hatter has finally given up playing ‘both sides of the court’ between the Hearts and the Resistance, as well as revealing to Alice that if she does end up getting stuck there, he’ll make sure she’s okay. The two lean in to kiss, but are interrupted by the arrival of Jack, who is obviously jealous at the new developments in Alice and Hatter’s relationship. Despite this, Alice goes with Jack upon the promise of finding her father, forced to leave Hatter behind.
Hatter follows the two anyway, still trying to keep her safe and ends up captured by the Suits with Alice and Jack. They reunite in the casino room, both a little worse for wear. Alice hugs him, having thought he was dead, but the two are forced back to reality as Suits try and enter the barricaded room. From this point until the end of the film, the relationship takes a backseat to the plot, as it reaches the climax, the casino is destroyed and Alice returns home.
Back home, Alice is released from the hospital and her mother takes her home and it seems as though Alice and Hatter’s relationship is going to be left without a conclusion. Thankfully, Hatter arrives in our world, having followed Alice and posing as the construction worker who ‘found her’ after she got injured at the construction site that she chased the White Rabbit through. In this final scene, both Alice and Hatter embrace their feelings for one another and the miniseries ends.

The canon/subtextual evidence for the Alice/Hatter pairing is hard to explain, their relationship relies on the looks and banter that occurs between the two and builds up over small increments and thus doesn’t really require explaining so much as me saying you should go and watch Alice (either for the first time or again) to understand the pairing.

Alice: Why would you help me?
Hatter: Do I need a reason to help a pretty girl in a very wet dress?

For me, the Alice/Hatter ship works simply because of what they do for each other and what they go through together during the miniseries. Together the two escape the Queen’s casino twice, flee from Mad March and cause the humans in the casino to ‘wake up’. This may not seem like much outside of the context of the miniseries, but within the series both Alice and Hatter have to put their trust in each other to achieve them.

Alice: Look, I have a bad record with liking guys...
Hatter: Well, there’s a shock.

As I was watching Alice I immediately latched on to the Alice/Hatter pairing. They’re one of the few canon couples that I ship because I love the way that they’re written. They’re very different characters but they play off each other brilliantly, having awesome back-and-forths that are both teasing and sweet. I also like them because Alice seems to bring out the best in Hatter, helping him change into a better man by the end of the film.
I think that everyone should ship Alice/Hatter because they’re endearing, amusing and delightful to watch. And, if I’ve done my job right, this manifesto should have at least opened you up to the idea of the pairing. So instead of telling you why I think you should like them, I instead ask that you go and watch Syfy’s Alice, either for the first time or again, and to judge the pairing for yourself.

Hatter: Ratty here, thinks you’re Alice of Legend.
Alice: Who?

The Alice fandom is fairly small because the series only aired once on the Syfy channel before being released on DVD. As a result it hasn’t gotten a lot of widespread notice and the fandom isn’t as big as it could be. However, the Alice fandom and Alice/Hatter shipping communities are still very active, as there are still people discovering the series and becoming active participants.

Hatter: I’m returning a library book. It’s a work of Edwin and Morcar.
Duck: How does the little crocodile improve his shining tail?
Hatter: He pours water of the Nile on every golden scale.

The Alice fandom that I’ve encountered is mainly on LJ and I’ve compiled a list of a bunch of the more active Alice and Alice/Hatter comms below.

One thing on formatting: I think you tried to center the quotes and the whole thing got mussed up? Anyway, the body text is difficult to read. I don't know if you intended it all to be centered, but I thought I'd put my two cents in.

I love this movie/couple. And yeah, I had the same weird sensation of actually shipping something that was canon for once!

I'll have to check out some of the comms. <3 Thank you for reminding me about this awesome ship.

I'd like to read this but the text is all grouped together in a way that makes it difficult to read.

I'll be looking for this series though. Is it on dvd yet?

I love this series and the couple. Something that might help, along with reformatting the text, could be some more pictures.

Reading this made me fall in love with this pairing! And after watching the miniseries, I only ship them that much more. Thank you for introducing them to me!

The interactions between Alice and the Hatter are hilarious and adorable and so wonderfully heartbreaking. I was sad when the series ended.

Although, if you don't mind me asking, are there some fanfics or fanvids you might recommend?

Oh yes! I will be happy to point you to some awesome fanfic stories for Hatter and Alice. Here are some recommended readings in no particualar order:
1) Always and the sequel Forever. Alice and Hatter after the Kiss. In our world, not Wonderland. Fabulous!
2) "Of Tea and Chess". Alice and Hatter on a supposedly short trip back to Wonderalnd, but it turns into quite an epic tale to save Wonderland. Fabulous!
3) "Unexpected Delays". What happens if the mirror doesn't work and Alice has to stay in Wonderland for a while. Fabulous!
4) "Mirrors Repeat". The mirror sends her back 1 day instead of home. (This time she gets that kiss from Hatter). Fabulous!

whew! Must pull out of fanfic moment there, before I get carried away some more. If you go to the >100 review community, you will find these and more.

Would love to know what you think. I don't like to think I have gone crazy all by myself LOL!
