“So, that's it, isn't it? You and Max are together.”

“No, we're not...neither are we.”

The interesting thing about the Kyle/Liz paring that people forget about is that they were the first canon couple on the show. The first couple on the show was Liz and Kyle, we opened up the series with them as a couple, which gets lost somewhere in the heavy text of Max and Liz. Kyle and Liz’s relationship got ignored through most of the series and I’m hoping with this essay I can give a little insight into who they were and shed some light on them as a couple.

First though, you have to understand who they were. I lean heavily on Kyle and have spent a lot of thought on his character so this is going to be a very in depth description. It’s important to this relationship that you understand him, above all else. Otherwise they come off as a nothing friendship with no real feelings of basis behind them.

The Inner workings of Kyle Valenti

Kyle started as the typical small town, high school jock. He’s always been good at sports and everyone in the town knows who he is. The girls want him because he’s handsome and you know, most girls envision themselves in that blue and gold letterman jacket he sports.

What people did not see, or just did not want to see was the deep rooted issues he has. As a typical guy, he’s not good with expressing himself. He does not want people to know that he has problems. But we got small tastes of his insecurities. In “Leaving Normal” we got a small glimpse of his issues with his mother leaving. It’s small, but as we look through the rest of the season, he has not only commitment issues, but insecurities with women as a direct reflection of his mother leaving him at a young age.

In “Into the Woods” we get a clear picture of the issues he has with his father. Nothing is good enough for his dad. The father/child camping trip was supposed to be his one time of year to spend with his dad, to have that bond and to, for once, be in his father’s sight. But once again, his father bails on him. First choosing not to go on the trip and sending the high school couch to be Kyle’s “dad” for the trip. Then by showing up to investigate Max Evans. Kyle plays second fiddle in his father’s eyes and will eventually be clearly second fiddle to everyone because of Max Evans.

Kyle’s Dad: Shouldn't you be in school or something?

Kyle: I have third period free, remember? We have exactly 36 minutes to buy this tent, unless something more important has come up.

Kyle’s Dad: Oh. Listen, Kyle, about this weekend...

Kyle: You mean fathers' weekend, dad? The only 2 days in a row we spend together all year?

Kyle’s Dad: Yeah. You know, I wouldn't do this if it wasn't an emergency.

Kyle: It's an emergency. Well, come on, you can tell me. I'm family, right? Is it the big invasion?

Kyle’s Dad: …Look, Kyle, I don't know what this is yet, but I can't have anybody else find out first.

Kyle: You can't or you won't?

Kyle’s Dad: I tell you what. You go on ahead without me. I'll call coach Clay. I'll make sure he takes care of you out there.

Kyle: Thanks for your effort. See you on Monday.

-Into The Woods

Kyle’s never had any real friends before. He’s had friends, buddies from the football team and such, but no one he was really close to. Until he met Liz. We see, more in Season 2 and 3, how much Kyle really depended on her. They became close, closer than any of the other friendships because they understood each other in a way no one else did. Not only had they both been healed by aliens, but they’d been hurt, deeply, deeply hurt by those they trusted.

I can touch more on Liz’s effect on Kyle when I get to their relationship, but the last thing that really impacted Kyle was Max’s healing him. It wasn’t that Kyle wanted to die, that was never the case. It was Max. For the rest of the series he was indebted to the one person he never wanted to like. Max stole his girlfriend, his father’s affection, his normal life. Sure now he had purpose, but he was alone and singled out from the group. Liz was the only real connection he had left.

The Essence of Elizabeth Parker

Liz is a tricky person to explain. She’s a small town girl with the normal small town life, until Max Evans healed her one day in the small café she worked in when she was shot. That’s where her story begins. It’s hard to explain how her as a person reflected with her relationship with Kyle, because after she was healed it changed her and she backed away from Kyle for a long time. Liz is a caring person, she could never intentionally hurt someone and she would always have a place for people she loved in her heart, no matter how much she was hurt.

Liz was and is an emotional person, but she didn’t start out that way.. She never let her emotions rule her, she was strictly all about school and learning. She needed to better herself in order to get out of Roswell. Her parents were young and foolish, they never went to college, they got married and had a baby at an early age. With that being their situation, they always wanted better for their baby girl. So she was raised with the notion of working hard to go to college. Boys and relationships would come later. School with first.

Liz did not have problems up until that point, her life was simple. She got good grades, worked hard at her job and was enjoying every minute of her life. Then she met aliens. In Liz’s eyes, it never ruined her life. Just changed her plans. She became aware of the passionate woman that was inside of her. Emotions she had never gave a second thought about, were now at the front of her mind. She wanted to love and be loved, she felt real fear and true pain. The strong willed person in her came out and made her a heroine, and in some cases a martyr.

She changed drastically and turned out to be the better for it. It greatly effected her relationship with everyone in her life. Including Kyle.

The Kyle/Liz Relationship

Kyle and Liz’s relationship lasted for about four episodes. In the timeline of things, they were together about 4 to 5 months. My best guess is that it about 5 months. The show kind of downplayed how long it was and made it seem like weeks, when it was months.

Kyle first asked Liz out at the end of their freshman year in the janitor’s closet of all places. It was where they shared their first kiss. They spent the summer together. Kyle’s not used to real relationships as part of his insecurities. He’s afraid to show Liz how much he really cares about her, or to do romantic things with her. All of this was pretty clear in those first few episodes. Even later in the season, Liz makes reference to being with Kyle when he got really drunk over the summer. Liz at that time couldn’t have known that Kyle wasn’t some idiot drunk jock. But like most people, we want to hide who we really are. A huge theme on Roswell was about how we hide who were are as people. Most only see that in the aliens, but even the humans hid their real sides. Clearly this was the case with Kyle and his relationship with Liz.

I don’t want to say that Kyle loved Liz. We’ll never know that for sure. When they were together as a couple, no Kyle didn’t love Liz. He didn’t know what love was although, his feelings for Liz were strong. Strong for someone his age. Most people don’t see that when they watched the show, but an example of his strong feelings for Liz is in “285 South”. Kyle followed Liz on her road trip with Max and Isabel. He was worried about her, he knew that his dad was looking up on Max and assumed that Max was up to no good and corrupting Liz. He didn’t want to see anything bad happen to her. He wanted to protect her, even if she didn’t want it. No ex-boyfriend in high school is going to do that for just come girl he was “casually” dating. He cared about her more than he wanted to admit, and more than she wanted to accept.

The episode “Leaving Normal” was a pinnacle moment in their relationship. It was the episode where they broke up. Liz broke up with Kyle for Max. She told Kyle that wasn’t the case, but she was lying to herself and him. What she saw was the end of a casual relationship in hopes of pursuing something more. What Kyle saw was the end of something that could have been something more. For the rest of the first season, we see this tension between them both. Each not sure how to go around each other, what to say, what to do. But both still cared about one another, Kyle more so than Liz, but that’s the theme of their relationship.

Eventually, by the episode “Toy House” they are able to rebuild their friendship. It’s rocky at first, but they have reached a point in their relationship where they can be friends, and only friends. Kyle still looks at her and sees the girl who could have been forever, but he’d rather have her as a friend than not to have her at all.

Kyle: Anyway, about...what happened with us...I just wanted to say, you...you were pretty straight with me. And you...you told me it was over, and...and...and I, I didn't listen. I didn't let it go.

Liz: Is, um, excuse me? Are you apologizing to me?

Kyle: I guess.

Liz: Wow. I...you know, I wasn't aware that this was part of your repertoire.

Kyle: I didn't either.

Liz: So, then, what changed?

Kyle: I don't know. I, I was, like...I was just laying there for like 2 days, and it gave me some time to think. And then there was this whole thing on Sally Jessie. You know, "ex-es on a rampage," and it just...it gave me some perspective, so...but anyway, I just...I think it would be great if...you know, if we could, you know, maybe we could be friends.

Liz: Well, it...um...sure. We could...you know, we could work towards that.

-Toy House

Through the rest of the first season, we see elements of their rocky friendship. Especially when Liz warns Kyle to stay away from Tess. He’s still trying to get over Liz by any means possible. That means dating any pretty girl that happens to walk by. Liz knows that Tess could potentially be their enemy, so she forewarns Kyle. She could have said nothing, but she’ll always care about Kyle, and had to tell him to stay away, she didn’t want him to get hurt.

By the time the second season comes along, Kyle becomes the person Liz can confide in, the person she trusts above everyone else because he’s been hurt and thrown off kilter just like she has. Things are rocky for them, and quickly go badly for Kyle in the episode “End of the World”. Liz needs Kyle to pretend to have sex with her, to finally end things with Max. Kyle never learns the real reason behind all of this, never learns that what he did, was to help the world from ending. All he needed to know was that Liz needed him and he was there for her. The rest of the season he becomes the outcast. The only two friends he really has is Alex and Tess. He tries to keep things going with Liz, but she’s distant. So he confides in Tess, the girl who becomes his family. He’s betrayed by Tess, just as Liz is, but in a worse case for him. He witnesses Tess killing Alex. Then she wipes his memory so that he doesn’t remember it. It’s Liz, who in the season finale puts the pieces together and helps him remember the tragic event that will scar Kyle for the rest of the series.

In season three, Liz and Kyle have a bond. They’ve become very jaded and their perception of the world has changed. Liz is barely holding on to her sanity, trying to make things work with Max while he searches for the son he had with Tess. Kyle has lost a lot, his family is torn apart, he lands himself a crappy job and has lost interest in school and his sports. By the mid Season, Liz and Kyle understand each other, and Liz is able to lean on him when things with Max go badly. In Ch-Ch-Changes, Kyle is the only one who understands what Liz is going through. She begins to show signs of alien powers, as a direct result of having been healed. Kyle is the one she goes to and the one she confides in, when she can’t handle it.

Kyle: Liz. You're not alone in this. If you need anything, call me.

Liz: Thank you.

-Ch-Ch-Changes

They never cross over the line of friendship again, but they have a connection that no one can take away from them, and one that no one could ever understand.

Why Kyle/Liz?

I didn’t get into this paring until after the show was over, but I think the draw to it is that it’s real. They were the only two humans on the show to ever have a relationship and it was realistic. There was no seeing into each other’s souls. No undeniable love, and no destiny. It was simple, but at the same time, there was so much going on beneath the surface. They had so much potential. I think, had the aliens not come along, they still would have broken up. Liz never saw him as anything more than the jock persona that he had. Which is sad, because given time, Kyle could have opened up to her, and there could have been something more there, they were just never given the chance.

If any couple of the show was doomed it was them. It took the aliens coming into their lives to make them open up and see who they really were inside and become the people they should have been. By that time they had moved apart and although Kyle still cared deeply for Liz, he had nothing extravagant to offer her. It’s tragic because there are so many relationships that we have in our own real lives that reflect this. We love, but sometimes we don’t love enough or don’t realize we love until it’s too late.

That’s why I get into this paring so much, because it’s not easy but it’s something we can all relate to on some level. They weren’t given a fair enough chance, but I guess if Kyle and Liz had been together, there wouldn’t have been much of a show.

Fic and Other Recs

Finding Normal by Cookieman1234 – This isn’t a Kyle/Liz fic. But it’s a fic that focuses a lot on their friendship. I never actually read it, but I’ve heard a lot of good reviews of it. Not to mention it’s considered to have the best characterization of Kyle in any fic. So really I should read it. ;)

Leave by ChrissyP47 – I don’t know if pimping yourself is in bad fashion, but this is my one parter fic about Kyle/Liz. It’s Kyle’s POV and is Post-Destiny.

Fanart by Nicole – I love her so much. I just want to grab her and huggle her and never let her go. She makes some of the best UC fanart out there. She used to really creep me out with her Max/Isabel stuff, just because it was that good and that flawless. She has some really amazing Liz/Kyle wallpapers that are definitely worth checking out. Ironcially, her site is down right now for revamping, but I still put in the link so it should be back up soon.

Conclusion

I hope I’ve explained this relationship so that people could understand it better. It was downplayed so much on the show that most people forget that they even were together. It’s just one of those plot lines that gets lost along they way, especially on a show like Roswell where the main canon couple was so deeply focused on. IE Max and Liz. I know that most people never gave another thought to this paring, but I hope by this essay I’ve at least given people a chance to go “Oh ok, yeah that makes sense.” Whether you support it or not, at least you can see what I, and very few others, saw.

see, the Kyle love i can get behind, its the Liz love i have issues with..but i am a Loyalist, and completely support Kyle/Liz. hurrah!

thank you for pointing out Kyle's issues. too often in fanon, he becomes "the stalker ex," which i agree he does have symptoms of..but also, he comes up to Liz and asks her if she is lying to him, and if she doesnt want something else. he confronts it, and i think if she had just told him the truth instead of stringing him along for several episodes, then we wouldnt have had the stalker issues!

also, Closets, Kisses, and Lies (http://www.silverspiral.net/closets.php), a Kyle centric, sort of Loyalist fic.

Cool old school essay. I love Kyle, my friends and I used to say OMB (Oh my Buddah) all the time, it was a weird practice.

Anyway, I'll check out your fics and I really enjoyed your essay.

Very interesting... it made me think about some aspects of Kyle, and of Kyle and Liz's relationship, that I never pondered before. Great essay.

One of the very, very few things I liked in the alleged third season was the K/Li friendship.

one of my favorite Roswell moments of all time was right in the first handful, where Liz and Max are sitting in the jeep, and Kyle is spying on them from behind and thinks Liz is going down on Max. "No! Liz, NO!"

I always felt bad for Kyle, he really gets the shaft all through season 1 (and, well, always). This look at him was very thoughtful.

I love for doing this, even tho it was a long while ago. Liz/Kyle became my favourite Roswell pairing, but it was only after it ended that I saw how great they were together.

And I was almost completely in love with Leave until the end, there was me hoping for a happy ending. So I re-read it (hey the L/K happy bits were still amazing), and I got the ending better, it made sense to me, I don't deny being a bit slow but its also 2am lol
I'm sure I read more of your stuff when I used to frequent Fanatics.

Anyway, dunno whether you've read it, but I used to love visions of my past (http://www.roswelldesertskies.com/visions_of_my_past.htm)
