Show Summary:
The Powerpuff Girls was a very popular show that ran from 1998 to 2004 and had a 10-year anniversary special in 2008. It had a Christmas Special, a Movie and was very successful all around the world. It follows the adventures of three super-powered kindergarteners called Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup. The girls were created in a laboratory by Professor Utonium and were made out of Sugar, Spice and Everything Nice. The girls use their powers to protect the city of Townsville from crime and the forces of evil, all before bedtime.
The Powerpuff Girls was loved not only by children but by teenagers and adults as well. It continues to charm children with their cute characters and amuse adults with its clever pop-culture jokes and witty dialogue. While there is no over-arching storyline, this doesn't prevent nearly all of the characters, even the villains, from being engaging, well-thought out and beloved by its large fanbase.
Two of these beloved characters are Bubbles Utonium, the cute one of the sisters and the mysterious, frightening embodiment of evil, simply known as Him

Character Analysis-
Him

"It appears our Girls are being secretly monitored. But by who? Oh, no! Not... I-I-I can't say it! This is a villain so evil, so sinister, so horribly vile, that even the utterance of his name strikes fear into the hearts of men! The only safe way to refer to this king of darkness is simply... Him!"

Of all the villains in the Powerpuff Girls, none was quite as strange as Him. According to Craig McCraken, Him was originally intended to be the Devil himself, although his personality was inspired by the leader of the Blue Meanies from the movie "The Yellow Submarine". If you've seen the Yellow Submarine, you'll know that the leader of the Blue Meanies, who had no special name unto himself, had an interesting dual personality- one flamboyant and feminine, akin to that of the homosexual stereotype you'll find in your average sitcom. The other.... was downright psychotic. Masculine, angry and in-charge, there was a reason he led the Blue Meanies, it's the same reason Him was heralded the "Evilest of Evil". Because it's so surprising- you don't expect this frilly dandy to suddenly explode into a furious rage, much less such a dangerous one. It catches you off-guard, and that's where he gets the upper hand... claw.... appendage thingy.

Him is a character that every fan of the show remembers vividly, whether they are a big fan of him or not. He either completely fascinates the viewer or completely repulses them, sometimes a mixture of both. A lot of fans who watched the show as a young child recall the nightmares Him brought on whenever he made an appearance. He is one of the darkest cartoon characters to appear on screen. His episodes always stand out in the fans minds as the darkest most disturbing episodes in the series. While most of cartoon villains are stereotypical and corny Him is completely different. He seems to have a secret agenda. He seems to do evil for the lulz. He just wants to have a bit of fun. This is what makes him so memorable, creepy and often ranked as the favorite villain in the Powerpuff Girls

Him is most often seen as a lanky, red being in a red dress. A red dress with pink ruffles. Tall black boots with pointed heels hide his cloven feet. On his face you can clearly see blush, lipstick and mascara. You could say that, all in all, he resembles a satanic hooker. Oh, and he has (possibly mechanical) lobster claws. Other than that, the only hint that he could possibly be any threat at all is his eerie, echoing voice. When he is using people for example Miss Keane in Power-Noia you can often tell, because his creepy voice starts to echo underneath the person’s normal voice giving a very unnerving effect. I guess you wouldn’t think he was such a threat when you first see him…but there’s definitely something very off about him. He seems to be no threat, but is in fact so terrifying that his very name has developed a Voldemort complex and no one has the guts to say it. They just call him Him.

Then, all of a sudden, his voice takes a nosedive into creep city as it becomes deep, dark, and pissed as all hell. In the episode "Speed Demon", we finally see Him in his "masculine" form- a towering giant with bulging muscles, fangs, and, it would seem, now completely impervious to their powers.

Now, no one really knows what Him's gig is- He could be out just to make sure Evil is still kicking around the planet. Maybe he's trying to take over Townsville- maybe the world. Maybe he just likes to screw around with people. Maybe all or none of the above and then some. In his time on the show, he managed to possess a stuffed octopus, create reality-altering chalk, take over the world (Or at least Townsville), infect the girls' sleep with their worst nightmares, manipulate the Powerpuff girls to the brink of fracture, cause every person in Townsville to hate the girls with a murderous passion, take time off for exercising, ensure future tooth decay, talk Bubbles into creating monsters, bring to life a raging piñata, mind-control the girls, wreak havoc across the town as a member of the Beat-Alls, lead the girls on a wild riddle goose chase, run a diner, bring the Rowdy Ruff Boys back to life, engage in an Eviler-Than-Thou contest with Mojo Jojo, sing, and save the day. And he was only in fourteen episodes. Total. But one thing Him never does is give "repeat performances".

The strange part is, if you look closely enough, you begin to wonder if Him is really trying. When he takes over the world in Speed Demon, he is completely impervious to the Powerpuff beatings that took him out before, even in his usual form (While it is possible he could have 'powered up' in that time, he is a magical entity at least. He's likely had enough eons of practice that fifty years of training would mean nothing). In All chalked up and Octi Evil, he proves to be a master of manipulation. In Birthday Bash, he shows that he is capable of MIND CONTROLLING THE GIRLS. Unfortunately, he only does this to make them open a specific present. Somehow, though, he only appears capable of winning in his schemes when the girls aren't there. So why hadn't he taken control of the planet long before the girls came into existence? Perhaps that is all just too easy and he wants to make his games a challenge for him?

We may never know. Him is a character whose motivation and nearly entire character is up to speculation. Him is evil. Him is vain. Him is powerful, perhaps more so than he lets on. That much we know. Ruthless in his pursuits, Him found the line between adorable child and murderous psychopath and decided to play jump rope with it. From tearing apart the world to charging the Professor for overpriced pancakes, the motivation for his actions is blurry and his personality is sadistic at best. Him is unique because he’s just doing it all for the fun of it. But when things stop being fun for him he will happily toss in the towel.

Unlike many villains and almighty evils that can/seem able to do anything Him's powers and tricks seem to be completely focused on the Powerpuff Girls. While it is uncertain if this is a favorite hobby to take Him away from a more evil day job or a full time game that keeps him away from the boredom of being all powerful but very lazy, any other children or adults seem only to be an afterthought in his plans. Maybe he already can control them and the Powerpuffs are the only ones who fight with their whole (un-jaded) souls?

Something of note is that whenever Him becomes something, like a teacher, an evil doll or a butterfly, he nearly always keeps his face the same. It could be that he is unable to change it, but a more likely idea may be that he is actually so mad/bored/lonely/unfulfilled and wants to be discovered as the keen trickster he thinks himself to be a world where, really, most of the humans of the town are stupider than a sack of cheap flapjacks. After all, of all the people of the city he lurks under, the Powerpuffs seem to be the only ones who meet Him on his own level...whether that is riddles or end of the world fire...

Him…one of the most complex, disturbing and fascinating cartoon villains to ever grace the small screen. But it doesn’t matter how much we ponder over him we will probably never fully understand him. He is a character that is different in everyone’s mind. Everyone has a different idea on what he’s like. I think the only one who truly gets Him is the madman who created him, Craig McCraken. Perhaps Him is just a dark evil part of Craig that he must suppress in real life and the only chance he has of emerging is in The Powerpuff Girls. We may never know…but we can always scratch our heads over it and try to figure out the complex puzzle that is understanding what on earth is up with that creepy red dude with the echoing voice and the makeup…

Bubbles

“Well, aren’t you all cute and bubbly? That’s it! You’ll be my little Bubbles.”

The cute one. The sugar. The joy and the laughter. This is Bubbles Utonium. Out of the three sisters, Bubbles is the one that always looks on the bright side and is always filled with cheerful optimism. Because of her naïveté and sensitivity, she is often seen as the useless baby of the sisters, a title she loathes. She is often underestimated, as not a lot of people take her seriously. But despite her absent-minded, childish persona, Bubbles is not someone to mess with. She has proven numerous times that she can fight crime and evil just as well as her sisters. Ironically enough, one can argue that Bubbles manages to be the sunniest and the darkest Powerpuff all at once.

Bubbles can act a bit oddly compared to her sisters and peers. She argues with herself, has a great fear of the dark, sings to herself and is seen to prefer colouring and drawing then playing with other kids besides her sisters. Throughout the series she is portrayed as someone who is off in her own little fantasy world.

Bubbles is the most compassionate of the Powerpuff Girls. She is an animal lover and she cares for her family and friends very deeply. She can see the better side in everyone, even the villains of Townsville. She is not the type to judge people and is very caring. Bubbles has shown that she is as willing to meet and talk to monsters on their own terms as if they are normal people to get them to stop attacking as she is to beat them up and when to kiss their booboos later...

This loving, sweet side of her can sometimes make her oversensitive. She can be very emotional and throughout the series we see her constantly break down into tears, have violent tantrums and be overly-concerned in things. Her problems with controlling her emotions can often lead her into traps that nearly end with all three of her sisters being killed. In Octi Evil her concern for her sisters is taken advantage of by none other than Him, nearly tearing the trio apart. In Bubblevicious her violent tantrum about being treated like a baby, ends with her being caught by Mojo Jojo. But her strength, love for her sisters and optimism almost always gets her out of these traps. In fact, it has been stated that because of this episode, Bubbles is the Powerpuff that Mojo fears the most.

Bubbles has a number of episodes that paint her as a rather terrifying foe- in Octi Gone, she essentially holds a collection of her friends, family, and assorted world leaders’ hostage until her stuffed octopus is returned to her. In Bubblevicious, she tears through a level 11 training session on her own- something the Professor didn't even trust Buttercup, the supposed "toughest fighter" with. Even in one of the early episodes, Meat Fuzzy Lumpkins, although it might not be considered canon, Bubbles shows a remarkably violent tendency when provoked, as she beats Fuzzy Lumpkin to a pulp before serving him in a hamburger to the Mayor. Sometime after the hardcore episode Bubbles is often shown (while still very empathic and emotional) as quick to anger and a bit snippy in getting her often overshadowed POV of things across. This attitude change is most noticeable when she has to repeat herself to her sisters....

Bubbles Utonium. Pure, sweet and innocent but also not someone to take for granted.

Why Him and Bubbles Works

I Like Your Style:
Him is probably best known for not only liking evil, evil things and their doings, but pretty, often thought of as 'girly' fashions (makeup, etc.). Bubbles out of all the girls, seems like the one to enjoy such things on the same level. More importantly, she is the least likely of the girls to judge others by their tastes when it comes to things that are just plain 'fun' in her eyes, and hurts no one else. In a way, she could be said as being blind to the twisted feeling Him knows he gives some more narrow minded people. So, in terms of what would make most middle schoolers BFFs, Him finally finds someone that is just viewing him as a 'person' (as much as he may try to make her judge him out of habit) and Bubbles gets someone who is into things that perhaps her sisters aren't/have grown away from/just don't do with her. Him gets Bubbles like no-one else does. Bubbles is one of the only people in Townsville patient and caring enough to try to figure Him out.

Unexpected:

Him, being Him, loves to mess with anyone and anything. One such thing is the expectation that he would only be tied in with evil and like only evil things. A relationship with Bubbles, if handled right, would not only mess with Bubbles’ mindset on a daily basis, but be very easy to hide, as no one is suspecting that he could stand her, being as Bubbles is, without being overblown, the least jaded of the Powerpuffs. Him is called the evilest of evil after all. Bubbles is called the cute one. Who on earth would think they’d get together? But it’s the innocence that would attract Him so much to Bubbles.

Self-Punishment:
Depending on how you look at Him's character, there is a chance he is so twisted as to enjoy the pain that comes from so much purity being so near him. It could be that he is tormented by his lack of turning the Earth to Heck, his (end goal), by his need to play and have fun in a complex matter (his nature). He may know deep down that Bubbles will never turn to the pure evil he is, or if she does that such a plan would come too easily to be any 'fun'.

My Evil/Good Teacher
it’s no secret that deep down Him loves to take on the role of 'teacher' and have others listen to him. It could be said that he is so used to no one taking him seriously anymore that he has mostly given up this drive. It is a wonderful feeling, then, to have someone like Bubbles come along and actually listen to him for a change. The catch is, that all the while he is trying to bring out her dark side, Bubbles is working just as hard to fulfill her need see the light in what he does on a emotional level.

I Actually Need You
Him, so used to either people overlooking his self as anything but stereotypes and labels or giving him their blind loyalty without question, does not know the first thing about this answering need. So, he may begin to answer with many things. Depending on your fandom POV this answer could be bottled emotions, long-held faiths, and blackness barely held at bay, a history book's worth of Him's relations with humanity. Let's face it, Him has most likely been around for a very long time, whereas the Powerpuffs have not (or have they?)
Bubbles, on the other side of the glass, gets many things in a teacher (good or bad), someone to care for and look after, and most of all, someone to listen to her and keep her company. Bubbles has shown many times that nothing digs into her quite as much as being alone and having no one think her ideas/feelings/care is good enough for them and worth having around.
Him has been shown as having a lot of free time to boot, with listening being the number one weapon to learning what his enemies fear the most, so his ear would be greedy for such things at first, as a knee jerk reaction to being so used to hurting any and all things Powerpuff. If he found Bubbles way too strong such listening might still feed other plans and be just as worthwhile.
Then, there comes the matter that at heart with so much power, the need to play games, and they want for everything to be "fun now or I'm not playing anymore," Him could be called one of the earth's oldest little boys. With all this 'mememe nownownownow wasn'tthatfunny?' thinking running at least some of his mindset, it is only natural that he may on some level really like being taken care of. Whether this care is in the form of talking, sex, actual sympathy, or a captive witness to his power, I will let you be the judge.

Love? and Pure Evil
Can there be such a thing as love to something that is 'pure' evil? Well, here is where the nature of evil comes in. Is a being of pure evil labeled that because of what he does, or simply by being born of it? If it is the first 'love' may be seen as the amount of twisted power needed to make such a relationship and make it blossom. The 'love' the creature, in this case, Him, feels is in direct relation to how wrong it is and how much evil is twisted in the details. If the creature is labeled 'evil' simply by being an embodiment that could just as well eat grapes all day and still be just as evil, then it gets even more complex. The draw that something that has only known evil to something of goodness, especially if they are fed deeply by feelings of hate, may be too strong for something that prides itself on being unexpected to stay away.

I love you For Hating Me:
Bubbles is called the joy and the laughter, and people often take this to mean she is always joyful as a person. While this is sort of true on one side, on another hand, one could say that her joy and laughter is at its heart, fed by causing pain. It's true that this pain is 99% of the time caused with the goal of protecting everyone (and furry animals) but still she is shown as deep down loving the fights, and even, finding humor and joy in them. Without this everyday need for fighting being fed it has been shown that an underused and overshadowed Bubbles goes...quite a bit hard core. So Him remaining just as evil as he has always been, while they each try to change one another, is a spinning wheel that feeds both their needs for fighting and games, and maybe if pushed far enough the other way, very sweet romance. As Bubbles nature is to hurt so that she can heal, Him's could be seen as healing so he could hurt and maybe sting others along with false hope...Or is it false hope?

Come to My Parlor Said the Spider to the Fly

Bubbles is often shown to have quite a bit of repressed darkness inside of her. One would think Him would be attracted to both the purity and the darkness dwelling inside of Bubbles. Bubbles seems to be rather drawn to Him. She is the first one to fall for his traps eg: Octi Evil, All Chalked Up. Him always seems to go for Bubbles to fulfill his plans. Why are these two so fascinated in each other? Maybe Him sees the darkness and wants to tame it, mould it until he’s got his own little plaything. Maybe he wants to devour Bubbles’ purity and leave an evil, dark-filled shell in replace. Who knows? But Bubbles may just respect Him because he is one of the only ones to see past her care-free bubbly nature and see the darkness swirling around inside of her.

You Understand me, Like No-One Else Does

Him just seems to understand Bubbles and what makes her tick much more then Blossom and Buttercup. When he is trying to mess with Blossom, he often underestimates her intelligence, eg: Him Riddle Diddle and Power-Noia. He hardly shows Buttercup any attention at all. In Power-Noia he assumes that the thing that scares Buttercup the most is spiders which most fans thought of as ludicrous thought. This shows that Him doesn’t understand or maybe doesn’t want to understand the other girls. With Bubbles he knows everything inside her brain, he knows her fear of the things lurking in the dark, he knows her favorite toy would be perfect to influence her with, knows how badly she wants to express her anger…he knows her like the back of his hand…claw…appendage. He gets her probably more than anyone else does.

So Would it Work?

Yes and no.
It goes without saying that without any outside trappings to tie his nature down, Him is not about to stay with anyone for a long time, least of all someone he actually has to put up with even when they don't agree, even when they stop being fun 24/7, and even when they limit him to only having sex with one person (ah la marriage).

But, if such a binding something or other where to come into effect (ether something more powerful than his own magic or something fostering true human emotions that he just has to find out about) I can see it happening.
However, both characters would be VERY opposed to the relationship, especially at first. It would likely be harder for Bubbles. While Him has no noticeable family, Bubbles has Blossom, Buttercup, the Professor and the judging eyes of all of Townsville to worry about. With such a large "support" group telling her that it's not a good idea, the very impressionable Bubbles would fight the very idea of it for a long time. Him, however, couldn't care less about someone else's opinion- if he wanted Bubbles, he would go to her. In fact, the only thing blocking him entertaining the idea of one would be his own prejudice against the group as a whole. A relationship between the two would have to develop slowly and accidentally- more like a chance meeting of the minds and less like love at first sight.
The seeds are all there for both Him and Bubbles to want to make raspberry limeade out of the lemons that might have brought them there....And maybe, just maybe, after some time there may be real love in what started as equal hate. Love...but I never said it would not still be of a very twisted kind. But then, how much love can really be called true?

Canonical Evidence

Him/Bubbles is the type of pairing that even people who are not big fans of it can see where it’s coming from. Him seems to really pick on Bubbles a bit during the show’s run. Here are some examples to show we aren’t all delusional fanatics.

Octi Evil: The first appearance of Him…and who does he go after straight away? Why sweet little Bubbles of course! Him tries to break up the Powerpuff Girls by possessing Bubbles’ octopus doll and planting nasty little ideas in her head (In a very NICE voice no less). We see in this episode how easily Him can manipulate Bubbles, something that reappears often during the show.  (The funny thing is, after all that, Bubbles is still seen all through the rest of the series carrying Octi, seemly having forgiven her favorite dolly for its entire evil doings under Him...) Also the moment Bubbles says “I hate it when you guys fight,” and a single tear slides down her cheek, Him perks up and rewinds the tape three or four times, zooming in each time. Why exactly does he need to re-watch it more than once? Why must he have a close-up on her teary face? Sadism? Interest? Concern? Whatever the reason is it did cause this particular viewer to scratch her head a bit and say, “hmmmm.”

Tough Love: In this episode, a disgruntled Him, casts a spell on the city of Townsville to make all of the citizens hate the Powerpuff Girls and try to kill them. Also in this episode is well known for the infamous Him-on-Professor action…BUT ENOUGH OF THAT! The hibbles aspect is a bit petty but Him seems very interested in Bubbles’ hair for some reason. Maybe he has a hair fetish?

All Chalked Up: Another very big Hibbles episode. Him goes after Bubbles again in a similar way he did in Octi Evil. He lures an angry and upset Bubbles into a magical forest full of everything Bubbles would adore. Cute animals, flowers and even magic chalk! Then using the magic chalk he convinces her to let out her anger. Him knows what will strike Bubbles’ fancy, everything that she loves. Then of course when it turns out he’s been using her yet again, there are some more touchy-feely moments…

This episode shows that Him really understands Bubbles and her need to let her anger out. Also he knows what strikes Bubbles’ fancy, like the cute animals and the dancing. We aren’t shown specifically in canon that Him understands the other two girls as thoroughly as he understands Bubbles.

Him Riddle Diddle:
All through this episode Him is trying his best to beat the Powerpuffs at his own game: A series of odd tests that if they win, will somehow save the Professor from having to PAY! All seems hopeless when one of these tests is Him's own version of the SATS, read by a less than honest looking machine. But, when Bubbles doodled a flower on the answer sheet and gets an amazing score, one can't help but wonder if Him's powers and Bubbles aren't somehow on the same wavelength....

Also Him loses his cool for the first time in the episode just when Bubbles figures out his trick on the SATS. Is he afraid that he’s found someone who really gets him?

Power-Noia:
While Him gives more classical nightmares like failing in school and death by spiders to the other girls, he seems to take extra special care in turning Bubbles most beloved toys against her (where is Octi? Where is Octi?) It could be that deep down, he likes to play with her dolls too, and we aren't one to judge. But this tea party did not end that well...

Also, Bubbles’ dream seems to be the one he takes the most effort in. With Blossom’s dream he rattles off mathematical sums to her, which she solves easily. With Buttercup he gets her completely wrong and scares her with spiders. Why on Earth would Buttercup, who battles disgusting monsters on a regular basis, be scared of spiders? It’s ridiculous. But with Bubbles, he gets her completely right. We are often shown that Bubbles is terrified of the dark. Him makes no mistakes when he goes after her, showing that he fully understands the way she works.

See Me, Feel Me, Gnomey: Another Hibbley bit that might be a little bit petty but Him just tosses Blossom out of the way…like he has a more important Puff to focus on.

Him/Bubbles in a nutshell? It’s like death flavored candy. It’s something dark, creepy, cute and sweet all at the same time. And the best thing? It’s something different in a fandom that obsesses with the obvious.

If I didn't already ship Hibbles, I would now after reading this. Well done, all three of you. XD

I always meant to write something Him/Bubbles...

Well done! I used to watch this show, but never really saw any sort of subtext between Him and Bubbles, even years later after I donned my trusty shipping goggles. But now that I've read this, it's become all too clear to me.

Yay! :D

I was so excited over seeing this finished. You guys did a heck of a job on it. I can tell you put a lot of thought and effort into this, and you totally made a shipper out of me. Amazing how a pairing can be so cute and innocent, yet also dark and twisted all at the same time. It's delicious.

You guys have inspired me to write my own PPG shipping essay, so thank you! *hugs*

It is the sort of shipping that has so much depth to it I can't think of a real reason not to ship it, if only because of how much can be done with it. The sky is really the limit to the kind of trouble they could get into :3

You're very right about Him. The PPGs first came out when I was a teenager and my youngest sister was a toddler, and we have both loved it since; she came in handy when I needed a kid to take to see the movie ;) A few years ago, she once told me which episodes she found the most scary, and they were all episodes featuring Him.

I think what makes Him episodes the most scary is it speaks to childhood very deeply, even if you are older, you never forget certain fears...

Anyway, great manifesto. I saw the summary of the essays that would be coming up on the community, and this one got me really excited. It was really interesting and a very in-depth discussion.

Yay! Welcome to the club :3! You'll find we make lots of those sort of lines :3. For a shipping most are afraid of, Hibbles is actually a very joyful one :3

Wow...this is beautiful. I always felt a thing between Him and Bubbles, but I was younger and didn't really know what it was. This, however, brought all of my speculation to the forefront and put it all in one lovely manifesto.
Congratulations to all three of you for doing such an amazing job!

A well done piece here. All of you did such a good job. Enough so that I think I ship this now. Like I'm not into enough pairings, but ah well.

Once again, great job. Now, I have to read those fics that were recommended.

*Just got linked to this from a friend*

I love the Hibbles fandom, twisted as some may see us, we're an awesome bunch of people. And it's true, Hibbles isn't nearly as crack-y as it seems at first glance.
This is wonderfully written and presents lovely argument for Hibbles without being too biased or delusional. <3

...
I've been shipping them since I was about 9. I still can't recall what got me started... Then again, I had a crush on Jack Skellington when I was six and I still idolize the Reaper, so maybe I was just being me?

*lol* I don't remember thinking it was cracky so much as just very very dark to start with, sometime around 2001 or so when I was 17...
Anyhow, I do think Hibbles attracts all sorts of people, from all sides of the dark and creepy happy fluffy myth loving mix.
We all tried our best to show this by mixing together all of our veiws on it and always building a case rather than deleting :3
