Introduction
Firstly, an essay is a piece of writing that presents the view of the author. If you do not agree with our opinions, or want to contribute your own then you’re welcome to. The one thing we ask is that you justify your opinion and explain why you do not agree with ours.
This essay is canon for both the anime and the manga, and contains heavy spoilers for both.
Colonel Roy Mustang
Roy Mustang, the Flame Alchemist, is a Colonel in the Amestris Military. As an alchemist he is highly skilled, using the Pyrotex gloves he wears to create flames at will. As a soldier he is fairly accomplished, having achieved the rank of Colonel at a very young age. He is handsome and well-loved by the female population of Amestris, frequently going on dates. When he was a Major, he served in the Ishbal Rebellion, and the horrors that he witnessed inspired him to attempt to climb through military rank to one day become Fuhrer and reform the Amestris government. Partially because of this goal, Mustang appears to be a power-hungry military man, but the fierce loyalty of his closest subordinates prove that this is not the case. He often appears smug and self-satisfied, even manipulative, but beneath it all he is a man who cares deeply for those he holds close.
In the Anime
Mustang’s faith in his subordinates is apparent throughout the series, especially at the end when he relies on them to help him pull of his dangerous military coup. In the movie, he is shown demoted for his efforts. In this action, we see that in the end, Mustang is more concerned with doing what is right (in this case, unseating the homunculus that was Fuhrer) than attaining power of his own.
In the Manga
Again, Mustang’s trust in and care for his subordinates is easily apparent. In an elaborate plan to get a falsely-accused Maria Ross out of Amestris, Mustang relied heavily on each member of his envoy. As the manga progressed, and his subordinates were removed from his side, one by one, Mustang was pained not only at the loss of his “chess pieces” as he referred to them, but also because in losing them, he had also had his closest friends taken from his side.
Second Lieutenant Jean Havoc
Jean Havoc is one of Colonel Roy Mustang’s direct subordinates. He grew up in the country and joined the army in order to help clean up the area near his hometown after the civil war; Mustang chose him as one of his subordinates because his physical skill was above average and because the soldiers of lower rank were endeared to his breezy countenance. He smokes almost constantly and many fans recognize this as his trademark. He is extremely unlucky in love and he personally feels that a lot of his bad luck could probably be attributed to his superior officer.
In the Anime
In the anime, Havoc is not nearly as developed as he is in the manga. He is still one of Mustang’s subordinates, he still smokes like a chimney and he is still very unlucky in love. He seems to be a little more by the book in the anime, but still defends Mustang when Ed says that all the Colonel cares about is promotions. He spends half of one episode in a near-comatose state after being rejected by Armstrong’s younger sister. He acts as a decoy at the end of the series so Mustang can escape with Hawkeye and start a coup against the Fuhrer; disguising himself as the Colonel, he gets sent away to deal with a conflict on the southern border. In the movie, he is seen going up North with Breda to try and convince Mustang to return to Central.
In the Manga
Manga Havoc is very similar to Anime Havoc; the one difference may be that Manga Havoc tends to be a little more courageous, and more skiled overall compared to his anime counterpart. This is probably because the roles of Mustang's subordinates (save Hawkeye) were reduced. His time to shine comes later in the series, when he starts dating a woman called Solaris, who ends up being Lust (a homunculus; one of the antagonists of the series). Although both he and Mustang attempted to kill her, she renders him paraplegic before they can and he is forced to retire. His paraplegia becomes the reason Mustang starts searching for the Philosopher’s Stone.
Anime Moments
Much of the slashable dynamic between Roy Mustang and Jean Havoc within the anime comes because of their close proximity. Because they work together, they are often seen onscreen together. Because of their “office” dynamic as co-workers and commander and subordinates, as well their more personal relationship as friends and rivals in love, their exchanges feel familiar, occasionally humorous, and usually friendly. There’s a large degree of trust between the two as well.
In addition to the general dynamic There are several specific incidences that generate a lot of subtextual support for Roy and Jean’s off-screen relationship. Very early in the series, Ed accuses Mustang of being interested in nothing but climbing the ladder of military rank. Havoc stops the car so quickly that Ed is thrown out of his seat and tells Ed that it’s true that Roy will do anything to move upward, but if it was only for his own benefit that Havoc and the others wouldn’t follow him. Havoc, who has previously been friendly but somewhat distant, is suddenly completely serious. It’s obvious he feels very strongly about Roy’s cause. He’s also defending Roy as a person, not just as a commander he’s obligated to.
It’s Havoc who explains the method behind Roy’s alchemy to Fuery, demonstrating that he knows Roy better than at least one of his co-workers, and a more-than-passing knowledge of his Colonel, since Havoc is himself not an alchemist. In the same episode, the two tease each other frequently. At one point, Roy jokes that once he’s Fuhrer, “all female officers will wear tiny miniskirts!” and strikes a pose. Havoc, in apparent delight, runs across the room and embraces Roy’s leg, nuzzling at his thigh and thrusting his hips into Roy’s leg as he cries out, “You’re a miracle! I’ll follow you anywhere!” Of course, anyone can admit that this is not an entirely normal platonic reaction to the proposed idea of miniskirts, and it’s difficult to watch someone grind their crotch into another person and not attach a sexual stigma to it.
Havoc’s observation of Roy in the Flame Alchemist episode was another telling moment. Havoc’s observation of Roy led Havoc to the discovery that Roy had been stealing his girlfriends. (When one wonders why, explanations like, “to keep Havoc available” often pop to mind… ) Viewers of the episode’s English dub are treated to a second moment, when Roy remarks that Havoc’s “grief affects his performance, which affects me.” Talk about Freudian slip; no one can miss the double entendre.
At one point, after having his hand injured, Roy binds Havoc’s wound. They sit on the ground, facing each other, and smile for a few moments, and Havoc giggles when Roy speaks to him. It’s a very cute and affectionate moment. Shortly after, Havoc asks Roy to check his pocket, and Roy does, taking out Jean’s cigarettes. However, when Havoc grins sheepishly, Roy stands up and pockets the cigs, admonishing Havoc with a curt, “stay healthy.” Havoc despairs, but it’s still nice to see that Roy cares about Havoc’s health.
Roy’s military coup was another demonstration of their trust: to follow Roy in this instance, Havoc risks almost certain discharge from his military career, as well as immediate danger to his life. Yet he does it, and Roy trusts him to do so. The plan also involved each man dressing up as and impersonating the other; that they knew each other well enough to pull this off says a lot about their closeness (as well as offers some interesting opportunities for really kinky roleplay…)
Conqueror of Shamballa boasted its share of Havoc/Roy shippy moments as well. That Havoc was willing to trek all the way to the Northern border of Amestris through the snow speaks for itself. Havoc also seems to miss bantering with Roy; he tries to joke, but Roy will have none of it. The scene also canonized that Roy used to light Havoc’s cigarettes for him; when Havoc reaches for a cig, Roy pulls out matches to light it, shocking Havoc, who expected alchemy. On the way out, he is depressed at the change in Roy. Later in the movie when Roy returned to battle, Havoc’s expression is one of pure delight; he’s so relieved to have him back.
Even though the anime doesn’t provide as in depth a view of Roy and Havoc’s bond as the manga, it still provides enough moments of closeness between them to imply something more than a working relationship.
Manga Moments
The anime and manga are so vastly different; there are many differences in the events that take place as well as the characters having slightly different personalities. All of these factors add up to make their relationship different in the separate media.
Having said that, the most noticeable factor of Roy and Jean’s relationship in the manga is that they argue and snipe at each other. A lot. Roy seems to enjoy teasing him; it’s really not that much of a big deal, but Havoc turns them into one. Likewise, Havoc tends to notice that Roy’s useless in the rain just on queue, but it’s actually quite hard to tell if Havoc’s banter is reactionary or not. Havoc isn’t stupid, but he isn’t one for thinking things through before he does them; he once gagged Roy’s mouth to check he was breathing.
The mention of that leads me onto my next point; moments that I thought were particularly shippy. Before the aforementioned gagging incident, Havoc was put in charge of observing Roy for the higher-ups in The Flame Alchemist gaiden and seemed rather pleased about observing the Colonel being his work (after realizing it was the perfect opportunity for revenge). At one point, he was watching the Colonel rest and was recording his actions beside him; you have to agree, the wording of that just screams shippy!, and if he does mind letting him stay in the same room as him while he’s sleeping when there’s really no need for it they certainly have a certain trust greater than just your standard superior/subordinate relationship. The first time you see Havoc canonically, he’s given the job of vaguely describing the way Roy’s alchemy works, and the next time you see him he’s given the job of digging through rubble for Scar’s body.
When Mustang and his subordinates are being moved to Central, Havoc is still digging through rubble trying to find Scar’s body, and seems less than pleased when Roy calls him up after he decides to take a break from digging; once he’s back at the office, Roy tells all of his subordinates that they’re moving to Central and have no choice but to follow him. Havoc agrees, but says there’s a problem; he has a girlfriend. Roy gleefully tells Havoc to dump her and find someone else in Central because the relationship isn’t that serious yet.
The irony of Roy supposedly thinking that it’s easy to leave someone behind soon becomes quite clear, as he and his subordinates stage an operation to get the Homunculi to send Barry the Chopper’s original body out to attack them. Roy and Havoc confront the homunculus Lust, whom Havoc had been dating, thinking she was a women called Solaris. After tearing open her own chest to show them both the Philosopher’s Stone all homunculi have at their core, Lust wets Roy’s gloves so he can’t use alchemy, and both men flee the room. Roy realizes he can use Havoc’s lighter (a present from an ex-girlfriend) as a spark to ignite the hydrogen from the water she just drenched them in, and so Havoc throws it into the room and Roy uses it to make the hydrogen ignite. Havoc retrieves the lighter, realizes it doesn’t work and asks Roy to light him up, before realizing he can’t (much to Roy’s irritation); the teasing factor in their relationship is still there, even in such a dire situation.
When they go back into the room to find Lust’s body, she regenerates and stabs Havoc. He falls, and Roy, acting on impulse, pins Lust down, shoots a hole in her chest with Havoc’s rifle and takes the Stone she’d shown them before. Lusts survives and stabs Roy too, before he gets the chance to heal Havoc. Lust leaves Roy lying on the ground next to the unconscious Havoc, shouting that he won’t let him die before he himself does. This moment, to me, was so touching and desperate; the way Roy chooses to put his subordinates before himself is something very few other people would do, and the irony in him apparently believing that Havoc got too attached to his old girlfriend too quickly is now very obvious.
Roy manages to cauterise their wounds with Havoc’s lighter and a flame sigil he carved into his own hand, and then goes to save Hawkeye and Alphonse (who also came to the Lab) from Lust. He kills her, and as he falls unconscious afterwards he begs them to get Havoc a doctor, in another show of total disregard for his own safety while his subordinates are in trouble.
Next chapter, we discover Havoc has survived, but has become paraplegic. He can’t get automail of any sort, and there’s almost no chance of recovery; his only hope is the Philosopher’s Stone; Roy sees this as retribution for the risks he’s taken. Understandably, Roy is unwilling to leave Havoc behind, and Havoc becomes frustrated and starts screaming at him, telling him to leave him behind and to forget about him. Roy says he will... but Havoc will have to catch up on his own. After telling Havoc he’ll be waiting at the top, Roy leaves. This scene is what made me into a Roy and Havoc shipper; Havoc’s raw emotion at Roy’s unwillingness to let him go, and Roy’s concern for him and desire to keep Havoc going. Havoc resigns himself to physiotherapy, saying he’ll endure the pain for his friends.
Roy’s need for the Philosopher’s Stone now sees him having to face off against both the Elric brothers and Ling Yao; all of their reasons for wanting the Stone are selfish, but Roy persists in the hopes of healing Havoc.
Why We Ship Them
raja815:
Roy and Jean have one of the most interesting dynamics of any couple I’ve ever shipped. Their relationship fits into many categories—they are commander and soldier, boss and subordinate, friends, rivals in love—but also transcends them. The trust and support that is between them on both sides underlies everything they do. Their personalities also fit into the occasion; it’s said that opposites attract, and it’s certainly true with these two, in a canon and subtextual as well as a shipping sense.
I’ve always loved dissecting relationships (this is my favorite aspect of fanfiction), and theirs is so interesting that it appealed to me very early on. In addition to their relational dynamic, there were the added psychological implications of Roy’s scarring involvement in the Ishbal war (and perhaps Havoc’s as well, although his story is ever explained in canon). I’ve always been fascinated with the effect of war on soldiers, and here was a good chance to explore that as well.
Other aspects of their personality, such a Roy’s womanizing tendencies and Havoc’s frequent rejection, make speculating their sexual relationship all the more fun.
And, on the shallow side, I find Roy and Jean both incredibly sexy. The thought of them together? Well, I’m only human…
galuxkitty:
I started off in this fandom shipping Roy/Riza, and then Havoc/Riza, and then Havoc/Roy/Riza, and then finally settled on Havoc/Roy. Their dynamic just appealed to me the most; their relationship was never set up to be perfectly harmonious, nor was it one of those ‘hate/love’ kind of set ups. Despite their occasional snippy moments towards one another, these two have so many different levels to their relationship, although the respect always remains.
The fact that Havoc is the first subordinate Roy had to leave behind is very telling to me; he was definitely the closest (living) male friend Roy had, and Roy was unable to throw away a trusted subordinate so easily, which puts him in great contrast to King Bradley. His subordinates are both his strength and his weakness. They just seemed to click for me; their constant teasing, their underlying respect and care and Roy’s eventually desperation combined with Havoc’s eventual dedication absolutely won me over.
Also, on a totally selfish and physical level, I’m no less human than Raj is...
How We Became Involved
raja815
I became involved in the Havoc/Roy fandom before I actually knew there was a fandom. I’d been watching the FMA anime with my boyfriend. We were both fascinated by the humanist themes it presented, as well as its depiction of the effect of war on soldiers. I had at that point had no interaction whatsoever with the FMA fandom.
Then, as we were watching episode 37, as Havoc was sitting dejectedly against a tree, something just clicked. I turned to my boyfriend and said, “I think Mustang and Havoc hooked up.” He hit me with a pillow.
The idea remained in my head until we finished the series, so I saw more and more of it as we progressed. I started drawing fanart of the two. I began looking online for others with the same idea as myself, mostly on y!gallery, my favorite art site. At first I could find very little, but eventually I found the HavocRoy community at lj. And there was much rejoicing.
I found
galuxkitty’s fics and later the woman herself. We collaborated on a fic and art project, and ever since then I’ve remained immersed in the fandom, doing my best to contribute in any way possible.
Quite truthfully, I’ve never been happier.
galuxkitty:
When I first watched Fullmetal Alchemist itself I really didn’t like it, but as the plot got thicker I started liking it more and more. I was always fascinated by the relationship Roy shared with his subordinates, but Havoc didn’t really stand out to me yet.
As I mentioned, I move through three other couplings before finally settling with Roy and Jean. Why did I finally decide I liked shipping them? Firstly, I read the manga for the first time and came to like their dynamic above all others. In this way, Havoc also became my favourite character, and it was obvious that Roy and his ambition took first place over Havoc’s own happiness and desire to settle down. I started poking around the fandom, and found it to be a little quiet, but not too bad.
I think Raja was the first person I met who actually fangirled their relationship as much as I do. Since then I’ve been even more involved, because having someone to celebrate your favourite pairing with you is much more fun that just fangirling it by yourself.
Why Ship Them?
raja815
As GK and I mentioned, the relationship dynamic between Havoc and Roy has a lot to offer. The power difference between them, both men’s emotional baggage, their contrasting yet compatible temperaments, the physical damage to each man in the respective media... all of these aspects sum up to a fandom that just begs a second look. If angst is your thing, there’s plenty to be found. If you’re a sucker for something light and humorous, their quipping and banter makes for a goldmine. If you want to explore psychology, you can easily find something to dissect. And if you just want a sweaty, sexy romp in the sack... well, look no further!
Interestingly enough, if you decide to ship the couple, FMA’s official merchandising makes it nice and easy to show your support as the two have begun appearing posed together on a number of products. These include a clear postcard (as well as a matching notepad) of them as chibis sitting together, and a similar clearfile where Roy lights one of Jean’s cigarettes.
Why are they posed together? You tell me; perhaps the draw of Havoc/Roy is too much for even merchandising corporations to deny...

![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
I found
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
Quite truthfully, I’ve never been happier.
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)

Firstly, any fic on my memories is one I loved. Here are some specific recommendations for you:
Raja815 - Yes, I must rec everything by her, for she is awesome. ♥ Not only is she an excellent (and smutty!) artist, she's also an excellent writer.
Tsuki Ni Mukau Ame No Oto - My favourite Japanese artist, Haruka Sena's website. Beautiful arts of not only Havoc and Roy, but the whole FMA cast.
Meteorite - My favourite doujinshi circle. They draw stories based off both the anime and manga universes.
Cinnamon - Another favourite doujinshi circle. They no longer draw for FMA, but you can still pick up copies of a few of their doujinshi on the Web. They draw stories from both the anime and manga.
Puchi Buru - A new circle I've just found out about, but already love. Their stories could take place in either the manga or the anime, and all of them are very fluffy-cute.

Dreamworks - Adorable art with very cute, humorous stories.
Dougo Arima - Very elegant art; this circle draws a very nice Roy. Their smut features both Haovc and Roy with toned, masculine bodies; always a plus.
Ichido - Another circle with humerous and adorable art. I love the way they draw Havoc.

Certainty by Sleeps with Coyotes - A really fascinating pre-Havoc/Roy fic set during the Ishbal rebellion.
Ashes by Harukami - One of the hottest kisses I’ve ever read. Plus, I love any discussion of Havoc’s nicotine addition.

This Japanese artist’s site is incredibly awesome, with beautiful comics. Unfortunately, she doesn’t list her name, but I can spend ages just perusing her art.

Date: 2007-02-16 05:35 pm (UTC)That's what I thought when I first saw that, but I'm a perv. ;)
That's interesting about the observation log in the manga. I hadn't read it yet, but now I really must. Plus I was itching for something more concerning the log and the two of them anyway. I was going to look for fic, but straight from the horses mouth is even better. :) Also, the rest of the information from the manga is intriguing. I'll have to start post haste.
Thank you very much guys, for an interesting read. It's always nice to see things that are well thought out. I'm just starting to get my room mate into FMA, oddly because she was curious after I made her beta a bit of Mustang/Havoc, so I'll have to point her in this direction too.

Date: 2007-02-17 03:55 am (UTC)The observation log is adorable, and a must-read if you love the Roy tachi. The manga is great for them, too. ^_^
I'm very glad you enjoyed this, and I hope it helps in swaying your roommate to our side of the Force! ;)

It was our pleasure. :) Yay, more fans! ♥ Keep converting her! XD

Hiromu Arakawa does release quite a few bonuses along with the manga and I bought two limited edition bonuses that was released with volume 12 and 14 (in English). That's why I wanted to know how this one was released.
Never mind, thanks anyway. I'll hope that the publishers decide to release this novel-style text-only bonus in the future, because it really would be awesome! But if not, it's ok. :)
The essay is really good!
Thank you for your reply!
