Yep, he's far more likeable at the end, when Takao's finally gotten through his thick skull. His development was pretty amazing to watch, along with Takao's and the other main characters ^_^ Kai went through the most, which just shows how much thought is placed into his character. And hell yeah, Kai and Takao's relationship is important, being the main characters as well. It adds humour, rivalry, friendship and of course love to the series ^_~ Running from the first episode to the last... definately the most important relationship.
A lot of animes sadly don't cover a time sequence, and if do, only a handful have character development, which is a shame. Seeing them as young kids with flaws to hot almost-adults with their flaws mellowed was definately fun to watch XD Their personalities as a whole encourage the other to change as well, which is wonderful ^__^~
