As a long time Who fan, I have to admit to being a bit worried about where they were going with the new series in terms of the Doctor as a sexual being. I mean, while you are quite correct that canon doesn't rule out the possibility of the Doctor having sex (Susan being the best reason), it's been a pretty hard and fast rule through the most of the TV series that there shall be no "hanky panky" in the TARDIS-- the Doctor has been for all intents and purposes, barring some subtext here and there, asexual. *****
Just my 2c. I was brought up with Doctor Who (it started the same year I was born) and I would agree that up to the ninth series, he was seen as asexual. Relationships like that didn't really come into it, but I'd argue that this is because up to the ninth series it was primarily aimed at kids. IMO the new seasons are aimed at an older audience, while still appealing to a younger one, so more adult themes can be explored. Plus, these days, multi layering is so much more common so that a movie or show can appeal to the widest audience possible.
I'm an inveterate slasher, so the bisexual references gladdened my heart no end, and well done RTD for having the courage. Mind, I would expect nothing less from the creator of QaF. That's not to say I'd ever want Doctor Who to become QaF in space, but it's a good thing, again IMO, to reflect the fact that at 900 years old, he's probably done *everything* at one time or another. Let's face it, if you were effectively immortal and there were no or few consequences, wouldn't you? ;o)
