I think no one had written one because it's not something avidly shipped. It's just accepted, and you don't see flame wars between the fans - no one feels the need to make their case (I've noticed a lot of the pairings with essays are the ones that are controversial).
I laughed so hard at that fic - was it really your first? The best thing about doing this essay was finding old favorites.
