Haha, I JUST found this but I think it's brilliant! So this comment may be a little late, but...
In the original script, Miguel and Tulio WERE actually gay. Seriously. I don't think it was overly explict, but in it, there's a scene where Miguel calls Tulio 'darling' (when he hands him the fish in the jungle, he says 'dinner is served, darling' or something like that, and some of the subtitles still have this line intact depending on how old your copy is.)
The script passed with the approval of all the creative people, but the producers or someone on the business end of things was like "modern audiences are open-minded, but not THAT open-minded", so the script was re-written into what it is now.
