You describe exactly how I see that relationship, and make your points very eloquently. I definitely agree that it's a relationship of lust rather than 'love'. Love just doesn't seem to exist in that universe. It is also a pairing of convenience. L and Raito being the two main male characters, it was bound to happen.
With L gone, I do wonder what direction the fandom will take though. Particularly with the fanfiction...
