Because the LFN fandom took shape before the popularity of LJ, it has a few atypical characteristics. First is the absence of “LJ-style” one-shots that seem to be so prevalent in many other fandoms -- most of the good writing in LFN tends to be of the longer, novella- or novel-length variety. Second is the lack of LJ recs communities -- you have to go to the various message boards to get recs, and you have to know the fandom well enough to know which board will provide recs that are in tune with your taste. For someone -- like you -- whose taste is pickier, I recommend the LFN Fan Fiction Message Board (http://www.voy.com/133091/), which a few other people have mentioned here. Finally, the (English-language) fic collections are unusually centralized -- virtually all of the recs of decent fic that you’re likely to receive will be found in a single, vast archive: The LFN Storyboard Archives (http://www.voy.com/133091/). Because of its size and comprehensiveness, there is a fair share (OK, large share) of dreck or mediocre work, but if you can find someone to steer you to the good stuff, it’s there also.
Another note: there are quite a few foreign-language sites out there. If you’re looking for vids or even episodes to download, you might want to ask a Russian-speaking friend to help you.
