Well, it's a bit like owls to Athens with me, I'm a devoted R/S shipper already, have been for some time and won't be turned against it either. Though just to annoy us, Rowling will surely come up with a long-time girlfriend or even wife, who hasn't appeared before for some mysterious reason, for Remus in the next two books. :)

Yes, precisely. They don't mean much to them, because they see them for what they are: ideology whose only source of power is the people who believe in it. It's very Baroque in that they've understood it's all a game, albeit one with rather serious consequences, and they play along, because they don't know what else to do.
