Personally I'd always assumed that Sirius was referring to the time after Snape first became a spy. As a member of the OotP there's a reasonable probability that he knew of the Snape/Lucius relationship through that rather than because of a personal connection with either of them. That's a very interesting point certainly, but I'm not convinced that Sirius knew Snape was the spy. I'd have expected some mention of it in their brief confrontation in PoA. That's just gut reaction, you could very well be right, but my personal take on the situation was that Snape's role as spy was kept secret because Dumbledore believed that Voldie had his own spy in the Order. Or do you think Sirius is speaking with hindsight? Hmm, I'll definitely think about that.
Do you see it as at all significant that Lucius ended up marrying Sirius' cousin? That could say a lot not just about potential jealousies or transference of desire, but also about how close the two families were, and how much Lucius and Sirius would have seen each other in childhood. I think it demonstrates how intimate the two families were, and Lucius' courtship of Narcissa would have provided many opportunities for interaction between Lucius and the heir of the house his bride is from.
And thanks for the rec, I will definitely be checking that one out. As I was coming purely from a shipper's view I'm not as familiar with the gen pieces, so thanks!
