I suppose what I most adore about the pairing is the way it brings Christine to reconcile within herself that she can both love and hate Erik, and I love the 2004 movie's portrayal (out of the other movies or musical performances) best because of how much that factors into it.
If you ever come across (I had to order it transferred to my local library - it's out of print) the novel Phantom by Susan Kay, I highly recommend picking it up if you haven't already. There are some things I don't like about it's portrayal of Erik, but it's just the most beautiful and emotional version, IMO.
