You're absolutely right, of course. We are following the in-book canon; since Dean doesn't know this and apparently will never know it, it doesn't really come into their relationship or how Dean relates to the wizarding world. Personally, I hope that JKR finds a way to put that background into canon, but from what she said on her website, that isn't likely. However, it is beginning to find its way into fanfic!
