While my real ship in this fandom has always been Janeway/Paris (for reasons that still elude me to this day), I very quickly accepted the non-canonicity of my "fandom" ship, and eagerly supported Janeway/Chakotay and Paris/Torres as my "canon" ships. So needless to say, I was extremely disappointed by later seasons of Voyager.
Then I discovered a magnificent novella by Christopher L. Bennett - "Places of Exile" - published in the collection Myriad Universes: Infinity's Prism, in which Voyager remains in the Delta Quadrant and makes a new home for themselves amongst the native population. And although I was devastated by (highlight for spoiler) Tom Paris's death early in the novella, it has stuck with me as my personal Voyager canon - largely because of the lovely J/C resolution it offers. I'm recommending it now to any J/C fans unhappy with the canon resolution of our beloved pairing.
