It just seemed from your essay that you were being rather harsh and over-generalising based on possibly a relatively restricted sample, is all. The majority of UC ship fics may indeed have problems of the kind you mention (because they have an agenda the canon characters might not easily fit), however I disagree that it's only the more recent which don't.Of course some were written pre-Tara, but if you can accept time-travelling to take Wilow back to her HS crush days, I don't see the poor characterisation in dealing with her as she was at that time in canon. At the time, Willow's gayness wasn't even an issue so you can't criticise them on that score: plus many avoided the HS era altogether by being set in the future. I for one would regard an actual HS-age involvement as strongly OOC for Giles, who takes propriety and morality very seriously.
