Well, it depends how it ends. It could wind up as an intersting character arc for Kaylee... or she could be her cheery self and forgive him after she's done moping. I think some of her hesitance to just flat out tell Simon she likes him is because she's still not 100% sure he returns her feelings... and she'll still have to live with him there as a reminder all the time.
I can see the arguments for Inara/Simon... but I really only see good friendship there. Not a spark. Not to mention what that would do to Kaylee and Mal. Who knows.
Ah, the thing I like about Firefly fandom is just about every 'ship possible has some support. I love all the characters. Smutt for all!
