Title: Digging the Shamy-The Subatomic Particle Relationship of Sheldon and Amy
Fandom: The Big Bang Theory
Pairing: Sheldon/Amy
Author: robothor1111
Disclaimers: I do not own any of this except the order that the words are typed out.
Notes: As long as you're up to date on the show, there'll be no spoilers.
Sheldon Cooper is a thirty year old theoretical physicist working at a university in Southern California. His friends are all socially awkward geniuses, but even among them Sheldon stands out. He has a specific spot he must sit in in his apartment, he makes his room mate sign an agreement that includes notice when a female would be over, rules involving time travel should it become possible, and many other things. To Sheldon, Tuesday nights are to be spent eating at The Cheesecake Factory, Wednesday is New Comic Book Night, Thursday is Pizza Night, and Friday is Vintage Video Game Night. He dislikes any change in routine, and spent the first twenty nine years of his life with a few friends, but he never had anyone who felt the way he did about science or agreed that romantic love was a pointless pursuit meant for lesser minds. Then, thanks to his friends' mischevious decision to sign him up for online dating, Sheldon Lee Cooper met Amy Farrah Fowler in a coffee shop in May of 2011.
Amy Farrah Fowler is a neurobiologist who is in her late twenties. Her vocabulary is just as broad as Sheldon's, and she takes her work as a neurobiologist extremely seriously, working through her lunch break and bringing the monkey she is training home with her. She had a rather lonely childhood, stating seven months after meeting Sheldon that she'd never been to a slumber party. A few months later she mentioned that she never ate in the school cafeteria because she had no friends, and had to resort to taking lunch with the janitor. She is an extremely intelligent individual who longs for the companionship of people who differ from her as well as someone who understands her. Then, thanks to a deal with her mother that requires her to date once a year, Amy Farrah Fowler met Sheldon Lee Cooper in a coffee shop in May of 2011.
The First Meeting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8g9OszJFIzg
The First Days
Oh, I am digging the Shamy! - Penny, 4.01
Sheldon and Amy's first encounter is surprising to Sheldon's friends, Raj and Howard, who arranged the meeting. Upon discovering that both of them have a deal with their mother (Sheldon's is to attend church once a year), an aversion to soiled hosiery, and a disinterest in engaging in any sort of "physical contact, up to and including coitus", Sheldon asks Amy if he can buy her a beverage.
This meeting is, however, the last time they will see each other for four months. However, they are in almost constant contact by text and email. They discuss such topics as his work in physics, her work in neurobiology, and the possibility of them having a child together via test tube and surrogate. They go out on their first official date when Penny tells them that they need to get to know each other better before becoming parents. She takes on the mother role and chaperones the Shamy (as Howard and Raj call the pair, much to Penny's delight) on their date, where the duo takes pleasure in using scientific calculations to determine how many men Penny has slept with. At the end of the night, despite having bonded, the Shamy does not go through with having the child as it is pointed out that Sheldon's mother would not approve of a test tube baby born out of wedlock.
Complications
Whether you see it or not is irrelevant. I can't see subatomic particles, but nevertheless, they're there. - Sheldon to his mother, 4.03
Sheldon and Amy spend much more time with each other after this first date, even inventing a new game in which they change one aspect of their world and determine how this alteration would change other events in history. Her almost constant presences and criticisms of the work of Leonard, Howard, and Raj lead them to dislike Amy, fleeing to Penny's apartment to be away from the pair, whom Leonard calls "John and Yoko." Howard refers to them as "more like Yoko and Yoko." However, the Shamy hits a reef when they discuss each other's work and Amy asserts her own work as more important than Sheldon's. They agree that this is an argument that they cannot work out, say good-bye to each other, and Amy leaves.
Sheldon acts as if the "breakup" does not bother him, but he begins adopting cats to fill his need for companionship. When the number of felines (all named after members of the Manhattan Project except for a "Zazzy" one that he names Zazzles) reaches twenty five, Leonard calls Sheldon's mother. Mrs. Cooper has Amy over to the apartment to talk to her and Sheldon.
Sheldon: What is she doing here?
Amy: Your mother thinks you might be losing your mind over me. As a neurobiologist, I was curious.
The wise Mrs. Cooper tells Sheldon and Amy that she was glad that they had decided to end the relationship so she didn't have to end it for them. She said she could not see how the relationship could ever work, as the duo had nothing in common and were "all wrong for each other."
Mrs. Cooper: You two are definitely not suited for each other.
Sheldon: That's a peculiar conclusion. By any standard, Amy is more similar to me than anyone I've ever met.
Mrs. Cooper: Well, I'm sorry Shelly, I just don't see it.
Sheldon: Well, whether you see it or not is irrelevant. I can't see subatomic particles, but nevertheless, they're there.
Naturally, once forbidden to do something, Sheldon wants to do that more than anything, and asks Amy if she'd like to make up. He takes %65 of the blame for their separation, and invites her to see his cats.
Mrs. Cooper Reconciles Amy and Sheldon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5MuXaKkk3M&feature=related
A few weeks after meeting Sheldon's mother, Amy asks Sheldon to meet hers. He becomes distressed, as Leonard tells him that meeting parents upon the request of the other person means that Sheldon can no longer say that "Amy is a girl who is my friend, but she is not my girlfriend." Fearing that remaining Amy's friend would be impossible as she now wants their realtionship to be more, Sheldon goes to great lengths to avoid Amy, changing the address sign on his building and dressing up so she would not recognize him. However, she does, and informs him that all she wants is his help in convincing her mother that she has a boyfriend so Mrs. Fowler would stop pestering Amy to get one. Sheldon agrees, and they webchat with Amy's mother, leading her to believe that they are having "regular intercourse. This stuns and horrifies Mrs. Fowler, but she is convinced.

Jealousy
Go, Amy Farrah Fowler. Follow your endocrine system. - Sheldon, 4.10
Sheldon and Amy in The Alien Parasite Hypothesis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWtO33LWGWE
After the few bumps in their relationship, Shamy settles into a routine. They webchat on Saturdays and still almost constantly talk by text and email. She attempts to cheer him up after a teaching session went wrong by making it appear as if she's sitting in an aquarium. Sheldon visits her in her lab for lunch, and on one of these outings Amy shares with him that she'd had an odd reaction to a man when she was in a restaurant with Penny and Bernadette the night before. The two of them began to discuss what could be wrong, and eventually Amy comes to terms with the fact that she was sexually aroused by the man. Sheldon refuses to admit that this is the case. Amy asks him if his denial is due to jealousy, and Sheldon said he had not thought of that possibility, but he rejects it. Amy asks if he rejects it because he does not feel jealousy, or because he is suppressing jealousy. Sheldon looks at her for a moment, then gets up and leaves.
Sheldon is told by Penny that there is something he can do to help Amy with her "urges" and after realizing that Penny is not suggesting that Sheldon have Amy spayed, he calls the man who aroused her and asks if he'd like to have coitus with her. They meet at a bar, but the man's stupidity turned Amy off more than his appearance turned her on, and she went back to Sheldon, the being who has what Amy is now shown to value most - intelligence. As they leave the club together, Amy takes Sheldon's hand.
"What are you doing?" Sheldon asks.
"An experiment," Amy replies.
They walk a few more steps, and Amy drops his hand. "Nope. Nothing."
It doesn't matter that she's not sexually attracted to Sheldon. As evidenced by her reaction in the club, Amy values what Sheldon has more.

One Step Farther
Look at you, getting me to engage in the social sciences! You're a vixen, Amy Farrah Fowler. - Sheldon, 4.20
Gossip is traveling amongst the group, and Sheldon and Amy want to track what kind of gossip passes the quickest. Amy knocks on Penny's door and says in one quick breath, "Sheldon and I engaged in sexual intercourse in other news I'm thinking of growing an herb garden mum's the word gotta go bye!" Naturally, the gossip of the Shamy having sex passes much more quickly than the herb garden, which probably never makes it past Penny. The group grins at each other and goes to Amy for details. "I described your lovemaking as aloof, but effective," Amy tells Sheldon in the kitchen.
Sheldon is not happy about that. "That's going to make me a chick magnet, and I'm so busy as it is!"
Later, Amy goes over to Penny's to inform her that, among other meaningless news, she's carrying Sheldon's baby. It only takes the time for Amy to walk down one flight of stairs for that tidbit to reach Leonard.
First Kiss
Sheldon and Amy Dancing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRdR8-0cDjE
In order to get away from Leonard's girlfriend, Sheldon comes along on Amy, Bernadette, and Penny's girls night. The topic of "has Sheldon ever kissed a girl" comes up, and Sheldon says no, not really. Amy says she's available for experimentation, and puckers up. Sheldon looks at her and does nothing about it, so Amy gives Penny a peck instead. The girls then suggest they go dancing, and Sheldon and Amy start shaking it on the dance floor, doing a dance that fans have called "the bird." Now, they have no problem touching as the dance requires them to do so, and as the evening closes, Sheldon takes Amy back to her place, as she is too drunk to take herself. She invites him in, and they sit on the couch and talk, Amy giving Sheldon advice on how to deal with Leoanrd's girlfriend. Amy suggests he play dirty, "which brings me to our next order of business." She leans across the couch and kisses him.
Sheldon does not react as many would to the kiss. He does not put his hands on her, and he oes not open his mouth. However, his eyes do close, and he does not pull away. When Amy pulls back and looks at him, he says simply "fascinating."

The following day, Sheldon tells a hungover Amy what has happened, and they agree to move forward and pretend that it never happened. However, it did, and their two brains do not ever truly forget.

Why I Ship Them
This pair is fast becoming likely the sweetest nonsexual, non-romantic romance in T.V. History. - Show Critic, 2011
If one had asked me a year ago (yes, after Shamy first met) if I wanted to see Sheldon have a relationship with anyone, I would have said no. I know that there is interest in a Sheldon/Penny, Sheldon/Leslie, or even a Sheldon/Leonard relationship, but I was never able to get behind any of these ships because Sheldon has never been that type of guy. He has always chided people who were in romantic relationships, and said that romance baffles and repulses him.
However, I had always thought that if Sheldon met someone who felt the same way about science as he did, and felt the same way about romance as he, that I could buy it if they connected on an intellectual level and the relationship was unique. Sheldon had referred to himself as a Homo Novus in season two, and I knew I'd be fine with a relationship involving him if he met another Homo Novus (a human being who has evolved farther than Homo Sapiens). By Amy's third appearance, I realized that this is it, Amy is this woman. The scene that really got me was the one where Mrs. Cooper forbade them from being together and they decided to anyway. Sheldon turned to Amy and said "Want to see my cats?" Amy smiled and said "I would. I love cats." All of a sudden I thought to myself, oh my God, I'm digging the Shamy. This video is what convinced me that it was an okay thing to say out loud.
