I like this pairing - but it drives me mad that they dance 'round it so much. They plainly want each other - but I don't know what it's going to take to get them to admit it.
Although there are superficial differences which supplied much of the early antagonism and sexual tension: North/South, man/woman, working-class/'posh' - Alex and Gene are really similar in a lot of ways. Both devoted to the job, both loyal to their colleagues, both 'out of their time', both lonely, both with troubled parental relationships, both quick-tempered, both divorced..... The differences provide the sexual spark, the similarities provide the compatability - it's the perfect relationship, really! :D
Not sure if I agree with what you say about 'their bond of trust surviving the ultimate test'. We've seen pictures of Alex and Gene apparently working together again - but it's hard to say what will happen to their trust in each other. In the last episode of series 2, Gene called Alex a liar, a freak, a bad mother and a bent copper. He attacked their tentative romantic bond by messing about with Jenette, and their professional bond by taking her badge. His trust of her didn't survive one myserious tape being left on his desk.
