I agree very much with your description of the pairing. It isn't all rainbows and sunshine, and that means that it's all the more beautiful in those moments were we do get genuine happiness and in their potential future. There's beauty and sorrow in this pairing at the same time, and that's what makes me love it to bits. Even when you reread their happier moments from part 1, you know what's inevitably coming after Sasuke leaves, and you realize just how precious those moments were.
