Read or Die was the first anime series I ever saw, and it was the interaction between Yomiko and Nancy that got me interested. At first, the ROD OVA seemed like a fun though rather weird action/spy cartoon. Then it slowed down and Yomiko and Nancy started talking to each other in a way that seemed to be both intimate and oddly guarded. I said to myself, "There's something going on here, but I don't know what. It's certainly more mature and character-oriented than what one usually sees in animation."
