I'm one of the rare few (I think) who don't believe that the words spoken by Lorne, Fred or Groo could actually effect their feelings for each other. The feelings were either there or they were not. I know someone telling me I was in love with my best friend wouldn't *force* me to be in love with them.
IMO, and as you described, the relationship built over several years and no amount of friendly advice could make it or break it. However, I do know that many believe it was those words that ruined it or at least put a damper on it, so it's a point that has to be discussed.
