Finally was able to read this now that I've finished the series and it wouldn't spoil me!
The fact that they weren't really touchy-feely also, I think, might be related to what I've so far perceived as a general Japanese prudence towards public displays of affection (at least in tokusatsu; I can't speak for other shows). Regardless though, I loved their relationship. It was heartwarming, it was important to the story, and it was canon! You don't get all of those things together in most cases.
