I have a big dumb love for Saiyuki, stylish and out of the ordinary animation, adrenaline-fuelled plot and with completely endearing characters, you get the pretty, the action and the angst all rolled into one.
I've never been one for threesomes, but the point you make on the appeal of this particular one is very valid. Hakkai/Gojyo can be undeniably sweet and full of longing, but it runs the danger of being a bit too domesticated. Gojyo/Sanzo can be pretty hot and intense, but there's the danger of probably one kicking the shit out the other in frustration or both being so competitive that the affair turns into a pissing contest. H/G/S could bring balance to all these various elements; if the characters function better together as a group in the anime, they could probably function better together within a relationship as well.
Plus, three naked men instead of two. I put my trust in numbers.
