Whether or not it's awkward to call Ashura "s/he" in an essay, that is the gender CLAMP intended for him/her. They make it very clear in RG Veda and elsewhere that the character is not intended to be male or female. Even if the speech patterns follow one gender, I don't see why that would negate all other established facts about the character. Ashura's gender is stated directly, and I see no reason why that gender should be incorrect.
