Background
This pairing is pure unadulterated crossover crack. The characters have never even met. But all the same, I quite like it. I though I’d take advantage of Free Month to spread it, even just a little bit. This is all manga canon.
Characters
Hinoto
Hinoto is from X, CLAMP’s huge apocalyptic saga. She is a yumemi, a dream-seer, who can see possible futures within dreams. She looks like a young woman but is actually quite old, and has spent her life foretelling the future for the Japanese government. She can’t walk or speak and communicates telepathically.
In X, in the year 1999, humans have so polluted the world that it is rapidly heading towards inevitable destruction. The Angels, or Dragons of Earth, believe humans should be destroyed in order to save the Earth; the Seals, or Dragons of Heaven, believe humanity should be allowed to live and given a second chance. Kamui Shirou is the one destiny has given the power to make this decision, and he must choose whether to become either an Angel or Seal.
As dream-seer and ally of the Seals, she doesn’t believe humanity should be destroyed and is horrified by death and destruction. However, after decades of seeing so much death and suffering in her dreams, she believes that nothing can prevent the Angels from winning. She has also foreseen her death at the hand of Kamui. On one level, she wants to die and be free; yet a side of her refuses to simply die. This dark side of herself takes control and begins to betray the Seals.
Hinoto’s younger sister Kanoe has joined forces with the Angels for the sake of trying to free Hinoto from her duties as yumemi. Kanoe is also a type of yumemi; however, she can’t see the future on her own, but can enter the dreams of other yumemi.
Tomoyo
Many may recognize the name Tomoyo as Sakura’s best friend from Cardcaptor Sakura. However, this is not really the Tomoyo I mean.
An alternate universe version of Tomoyo plays a fairly prominent role in CLAMP’s new series, Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE. This Tomoyo is the princess of Nihon, with an official title of Tsukuyomi (after the Japanese moon deity). She is a yumemi and priestess also; she uses her abilities to see the future and even to communicate with people from other worlds, along with sustaining Nihon’s magical defenses.
Her sister is Kendappa, the Empress, who uses the official title of Amaterasu (after the Japanese sun goddess). Her sister’s lover Souma is her bodyguard. Tomoyo sent her other bodyguard Kurogane off on a journey to learn ‘true strength.’ This journey with his companions is the main story of TRC.
She takes her position seriously and hates unnecessary death. She also has her own sense of humor and mischief, and doesn’t take herself over-seriously.
Why?
Quite frankly, this ship just started as a big in-joke between my friend AkaiYuki and myself as a result of seemingly endless shipping wars involving Tomoyo. In the end, though, it makes an odd sort of sense.
Tomoyo is one of CLAMP’s most famous and popular characters without a canon requited love interest. In CCS, Tomoyo was unrequitedly in love with Sakura, and she made her peace with the fact that Sakura would never love her back. Her love for Sakura has been shown to transcend incarnations.
Hinoto too doesn’t have anyone (except her two body guards Hien and Souhi). She is trapped and desperate, and in need of –someone-.
For Tomoyo-hime and Hinoto to meet through their dreams is not at all inconceivable. This is entirely speculation of course, but I think Tomoyo is just the sort of person that Hinoto might be able to talk to. Tomoyo would know she can’t fully understand the situation but would just listen and not judge; she would also be far enough estranged from the whole mess of the apocalypse that Hinoto would find herself willing to talk. Her humor and genuine understanding might do Hinoto some good.
Also, Tomoyo loves dressing up her love interests. And imagining her dressing Hinoto up is rather fun/sweet/disturbing.
There is only one fic for this pairing, written by myself. What limited ‘fandom’ exists is mainly restricted to me and my f-list.
