I think this is an excellent essay (and really raises the bar for *my* Blakes7 B/A essay if I want to equal your canon erudition and command of the fanfic base) BUT...I think what Travers meant by "a father's love" is "don't worry, we don't think you're taking advantage of your Watcher relationship to have sex with your Slayer" and that's why Giles didn't dispute the characterization.
It's true that (to the coffee-spluttering amazement of all) Buffy got reasonably good SAT scores, but then so did Cordelia. I wouldn't call Buffy particularly intelligent, and she's clearly extremely anti-intellectual. IMO, if Giles is going to get involved with a) a woman and b) one who's much younger than he is, it's going to be Willow all the way.
