「tomodachi dakara」 - Kamui/Keiichi [X/1999]
author:
hinikuish (Parron)
series: X/1999
pairing: Shirou Kamui/Segawa Keiichi
word count: ...Many.
spoilers: Detailed ones for the first fourteen volumes of the manga, less so for later volumes. Since Keiichi wasn't in the anime, no anime spoilers at all!
notes: Very, very late. My internet abruptly went away for a month; I'm still listed as having the claim on the pairing, so I hope it's OK that I'm just going ahead and posting it so far past the due day. I'm sorry as well for the abuse of commas and other random errors; I wanted to get this posted before it got even more overdue and so forewent beta-reading.
series
X takes place in Tokyo, Japan in the year 1999. A take on the Book of Revelations, the series tells the story of the end of the world. At the end of the century, fourteen people come together to fight to see what will happen to earth—the Dragons of Heaven (or Seven Seals) fight to preserve humanity, even if it means the earth's eventual destruction. On the flip-side, the Dragons of Earth (or Seven Angels/Harbingers) fight to preserve the earth, at the cost of destroying all of humanity. The center of this battle lies in the hands of Shirou Kamui, a boy chosen to either act in God's will (on the side of the Dragons of Heaven) or against it (the Dragons of Earth)—it's his choice to make. Kamui chooses to fight for humanity in the end, although at the cost of the life of his childhood friend and love interest.
This manifesto focuses on the pairing of Kamui and his friend and classmate Segawa Keiichi, one of the few normal, well adjusted people in the series. It's an uncommon pairing, but a refreshing one, as it is probably the only potential pairing for Kamui that involves little to no angst.
kamui
Kamui is a sweet kid at heart. He just doesn't show it much. Although his appearance is small (he's the second-shortest of the cast, surpassed only by a middle-school girl) and slender, in many ways the typical frail pretty boy, Kamui is rude, arrogant, brash and prone to solving things with violence. After Kotori's death and Fuuma's change, Kamui becomes more withdrawn, but his bratty side never leaves him completely. He has a good deal of mental strength, however, and tries very hard to overcome his problems—instead of spending his time stuck in the past, regretting his choices and actions and the deaths of his loved ones, Kamui makes a considerable effort to move on with his life and become strong enough to protect what he has left. He's somewhat gullible, short tempered, and isn't very good at expressing himself—Kamui also isn't very self aware, although he's fairly perceptive as to the feelings of the people around him. The ones he likes, anyway.
Kamui is the most powerful person in X, magically—he is the manifest will of God and the center of the whole apocalypse. In the beginning of X, even though he doesn't understand his role in the battles, Kamui doesn't hesitate to revel in his importance and fight anything that gets in his way. However, after the death of Kotori, he becomes more timid, hardly ever fighting for fear of hurting his friends—or hurting Fuuma, who Kamui is convinced is possessed and fighting against his will. His reluctance to use his powers forms a great deal of the difficulty in X; if he becomes "Kamui" the idea instead of Kamui the person, he'll be able to save humanity. As long as he doesn't, he's doomed to fail. This hinges on his wish, the thing he wants more than anything else in the world—something that Kamui is uncertain of. He thinks that it is "to bring Fuuma back to his old self," but he has been informed that that is not actually his true wish.
keiichi

If nothing else, Keiichi is enthusiastic. A boy in Kamui's class at school, Keiichi is loud, outgoing, and tends to end his sentences in exclamation marks. He doesn't hesitate to voice his opinions, even if they sound silly, although he can get belatedly apologetic when he thinks he was rude or tactless. Keiichi is the representative of class 1-Z in CLAMP School, and after Kamui transfers in Keiichi makes a point of singling him out—to help him get used to the new school, and to be his friend.
Keiichi lived with his parents in a small house close to Sunshine 60. However, over the course of X he loses both of his parents in two separate earthquakes—his father died before he and Kamui became friends, and his mother in the collapse of Sunshine 60. Both times, Keiichi is shaken and upset, but he decides to do his best to live on without them, moving into the dorms at CLAMP School when his home was destroyed. Keiichi shows amazing strength, especially for an X character—he freely admits to his grief, but doesn't dwell on it. To Kamui's bewilderment, Keiichi shows more immediate concern over Kamui's wounds than his mother's death when they see one another after the event—Keiichi isn't one to focus on the past. He grieves for and misses his parents, but that isn't the focal point of his life.
He's a perfectly ordinary boy with no magical powers (other than perhaps his enthusiasm). Keiichi is unabashed about admitting he finds Subaru and Kamui good looking, and often plays the part of the idiot, admitting to dreams of being a super-hero on top of his casual observations of people's looks. He's no idiot, though—at the very least, he's much better than Kamui at math.
evidence
We first meet Keiichi in X-11, however, by then Kamui has known him for a while already. So his sudden, cheerful introduction to us is not the first time Kamui has had to deal with him; however, it's pretty clear that however long they've known one another, Kamui still isn't used to it. Although they are not friends at this point, Keiichi is clearly fond of Kamui, giving him notes and trying to make small talk with him about gym class before inviting him to eat lunch together. All this happens in the space of roughly three minutes, and Kamui, although he accepts the lunch invitation, is clearly taken aback by it all.
They do have lunch together, and although Keiichi does all of the talking, it's fairly clear that Kamui—if not exactly buddy-buddy with Keiichi—clearly is enjoying himself to a degree. Keiichi even invites Kamui over to his house for dinner, and Kamui accepts.
This is significant in a way that isn't at once obvious: X-11 takes place after a three month time-skip, at the beginning of which Kamui's entire life effectively crumbled around him. Not only was he nearly killed by his childhood friend, but he was a direct witness and indirect cause for the murder of his other childhood friend and crush. Kamui had gone nearly catatonic from the shock and loss, and as of three months later he is only beginning to come out of his shell. Even so, he still spends most of his time thinking about the past and visiting Kotori's grave—he has constant nightmares and hasn't opened up to anyone other than Subaru. And while Subaru is a good friend for Kamui in one sense, he's not a good influence for a still-grieving Kamui who has no other close friends.
Keiichi seeking Kamui out and including him is one of the first things that changes this about Kamui; Keiichi's friendship and inclusion of Kamui is one of the very first things to start and draw Kamui out of his shell.
While Kamui and Keiichi eat lunch, there is an earthquake. On CLAMP Campus, it is only a tremor, but it is still enough to worry them both—Keiichi, who has recently lost his father to one, outright tackles Kamui when Kamui stands, yelling at him to stay down and outright lecturing him for doing something so stupid. Kamui, although a relatively short tempered person, doesn't take this lecturing badly at all, instead asking if Keiichi could please get off of him. Incidentally, while lying in the grass, Kamui has somehow gotten his hand on Keiichi's thigh. Fanservice? Involuntary reaction to suddenly having someone pinning you down? Amusing? Yes. It's not a deeply significant thing, although it can be noted that Kamui isn't very concerned with the physical contact at all. This early in the series, he's withdrawn and flinchy—we're still volumes away from the Kamui that willingly touches others.

Later in the same volume, we see Kamui visit Keiichi and his mother at home. After, Keiichi offers to walk Kamui to the train station, and as they walk they have a conversation: Keiichi wonders if the people Kamui is always with are his cousins or siblings, and then if they're his friends. When Kamui confirms that they are, Keiichi asks if he can be Kamui's friend, too: Kamui doesn't respond directly, but he does blush slightly, looking pleased. Just then, an earthquake hits—Kamui immediately runs off to Sunshine 60 to do what he can to help, first stopping to tell Keiichi to go home and that he'll be fine.
And although Kamui does get injured in the fight resulting, they aren't terribly serious wounds on his part. However, Sumeragi Subaru, a man Kamui feels very close to due to their similar pasts (to the point that it can easily be argued that Kamui has a small crush on him) is fairly badly hurt, losing his right eye as Kamui watches. He falls into a state of deep depression, not only due to this but because things just keep going badly for him, and misses (it is implied) about a week of school. When he returns, he asks after Keiichi when he notices that Keiichi isn't in the classroom—and is informed that Keiichi's mother was killed in the very earthquake they encountered after Kamui's visit. Today is Keiichi's first day back in school after the funeral; now, both his parents have died in earthquakes related to the End of the World.
Kamui? Feels terrible and rushes to go find Keiichi. Keiichi's first reaction to seeing his friend? Is to worry about Kamui's bandages. Although none of this is outside the realm of platonic, it's strong platonic. Kamui is reaching out and worrying about people that have nothing to do with him or the future; yes, he also feels guilty, but it's also important to note that Kamui isn't reaching out to Keiichi because of guilt or to apologize, which is often a facet of his relationship with Subaru. Keiichi has no idea about the End of the World, and Kamui is worried simply because he cares; because Keiichi is his friend.
And as for Keiichi—quite simply, his first reaction to seeing Kamui is to stop looking upset about his mother (which is quite a warranted feeling), and to immediately focus on Kamui and worry about him wholeheartedly. Not for a moment does he concentrate on his own problems; he worries completely about Kamui. It is only when Kamui brings up Keiichi's mother that he shifts the conversation to her. At the end of their conversation, Keiichi suddenly realizes how late they are to class, and they run back—but not before Kamui, holding Keiichi's wrist, tells him that he would, if it's alright, like to be his friend in return. Keiichi agrees.
We don't see Keiichi again for a while; until volume fourteen. Kamui is badly injured in a fight and spends a fairly long period of time in the hospital recovering. Subaru, who has been visiting him regularly all this time, mentions to Kamui that Keiichi has been asking after him whenever he sees Subaru; Kamui replies (smiling) that it's because they are friends. Upon his release Kamui returns to school and is of course confronted by Keiichi, who, in his usual loud manner, worries over Kamui's bandages and admits to having been worried about Kamui all this time, and that he's relieved to see he's okay.
Soon after, Kamui and Keiichi talk (or as is more usual, Keiichi talks and Kamui listens), and Keiichi admits to being worried about the worsening earthquakes and damage to Tokyo. Without knowing Kamui's role in it all, he says he sometimes wishes that he had superpowers and could do something about the earthquakes to make them stop for good—then, realizing that it sounds stupid (and again, not realizing that Kamui has just those powers), he, embarrassed, tells Kamui that it's okay to laugh at the idea, that he won't mind. Instead, Kamui, serious, tells him that he won't. Keiichi smiles and thanks him.
...That's the last time we see Keiichi in X. Presumably he's still alive and well and Kamui and Keiichi eat lunch together often as nothing has been mentioned of him since; if Keiichi had died or moved away or what have you it surely would have been mentioned in the story—not only by merit of Keiichi being Kamui's One Normal Friend, but also because I doubt the opportunity for angst would have been passed over had he died.
It's very clear that Kamui and Keiichi are friends. Indeed, that's the point - CLAMP themselves have said that Kamui and Keiichi are meant to show a friendship, and at this I think it's safe to take them at their word. As such, although there are definitely positive feelings between the two of them for one another, we must assume that they are entirely platonic in nature. However, it's really not hard to imagine things moving beyond that, either.
We'll start with Keiichi since he's much less complex. He likes, worries after, and wants to be around Kamui. In all of his appearances, he puts Kamui first and worries about him vocally, most notably on Keiichi's first day back in school after his mother's death. Part of this is due to Keiichi's straight-forward personality, but it's not difficult to extend that into him harboring some sort of crush on his classmate. Interesting, Keiichi refers to Kamui as "good looking" at one point. Although cheerful and over enthusiastic, Keiichi has never shown any real sign of a sense of humor or even a tendency to joke around; although the statement shouldn't be taken as a confession, the fact that Keiichi even noted and complimented Kamui with such a thing makes it easy to assume that he is on some level attracted to Kamui.
Kamui himself is much more complicated. He's shy to a degree—or rather, he's not outgoing, which is a distinction to make—and with circumstances as they are in X, he doesn't really reach out to anyone until very late in the series, and only after knowing them for months. It is a huge sign of his development when after months of living with her, Kamui reaches out to Yuzuriha in a protective manner, for example. With Keiichi, Kamui shows hardly any reluctance. Although clearly taken aback by him, Kamui agrees to go to Keiichi's house for dinner, be tutored by him, and goes on to spend time with him on a fairly regular basis. Compare that to his other "friends" in X—Subaru Kamui feels a bond to because of their histories, but it's hardly a "friendship," and the other three young Seals live in the same house as him and still he isn't sure if they're his friends or not (it takes Keiichi asking Kamui if they are for Kamui to even wonder). The simple fact that Kamui has and maintains a normal friendship is huge; he worries about Keiichi and willingly spends time with him, without Keiichi having to do 99% of the initializing.
Kamui also has a type. Aside from Subaru, who while deeply important to Kamui isn't really a "friend," and Fuuma, who is a case unto himself, the three people Kamui is without a doubt closest to are Kotori, Sorata, and Yuzuriha—three very cheerful, talkative people. Kotori is less outgoing than the other two from what we see of her, but she doesn't hesitate to make her feelings known. Sorata is described as CLAMP as Kamui's "older brother;" you can also make a case for him being a good "best friend" candidate as well. As for Yuzuriha, she is the person that is best used to gauge Kamui's development. He's protective of her, reaches out to her, and seems to spend much of his time at home with her (if only because they also live with Sorata and Arashi, and the former no doubt spends all his time focusing on the latter). And then Kamui makes a friend—someone cheerful, talkative, outgoing and clear-minded. Keiichi can be compared to the three mentioned characters in various ways, and it all comes up the same—he's cut from the same cloth. And Kamui has consistently in X been drawn to those characteristics; he seems to be the most comfortable around those characters.
Compare that to characters like Arashi or, better, Subaru—both are quiet, polite and generally unassertive (at least vocally). Kamui hardly speaks to Arashi and when he does it isn't on terribly friendly terms (admittedly, they don't speak at all on screen for almost ten volumes, despite living together). And while no one can argue that Kamui cares deeply for Subaru and that the feeling is mutual (if platonic), when the two of them are together, Kamui worries, is frustrated, and seems awkward. And Subaru is mostly silent. They may care for one another, but they don't seem very comfortable, either.
For whatever reason, Kamui seems to get on best with loud people.
couple
Hey, I'm sure you're saying, but what about Subaru? What about Fuuma? After all, they are Kamui's most popular romantic interests, supported by CLAMP themselves (the latter to a larger degree, but CLAMP isn't above nodding towards S/K when the mood strikes). And I'm certainly not going to pretend for a moment that they aren't incredibly important to Kamui in different ways. But Subaru and Kamui's relationship, while many things, can't really be called a "friendship." And the thing to remember about Kamui and Fuuma is that they spent time together for two days before Kotori died—after a break of six years—and that the Fuuma we see for most of the series clearly isn't "Fuuma" at all.
Does this mean they can't be shipped? Of course not. I'm just arguing that neither of them are friendships. Which is precisely the reason for Kamui/Keiichi's appeal.
Keiichi is normal. Keiichi likes Kamui and could very well be harboring a crush on him. And Keiichi is also of the type that Kamui is consistently drawn to. Provided they both survive the end of X, all other plot aside, I would be very surprised if the two didn't maintain their friendship for years to come, no matter who Kamui ends up with.
And provided they both survive, I wouldn't be surprised if they became a couple, either (Kamui's other love interests for the sake of this essay will be considered killed in the final battle). Keiichi is supportive, worries, clearly cares and clearly has no problem showing it. He isn't, however, overbearing (in general), at least not about his feelings. Frankly, letting Kamui take the initiative is a good thing.
And Kamui, if nothing else, is probably very able to appreciate Keiichi's normalcy. Almost everyone Kamui knows is involved in the end of the world; a good half of them are killed because of it, a fraction of them killed indirectly because of him. Kotori is the glaring example. Keiichi is not only uninvolved, he's utterly unaware of Kamui and his Destiny, something none of the others let Kamui forget. Of course, one would assume Kamui tells Keiichi eventually, but the mere fact that Keiichi is one of the few people Kamui knows that treats him simply as a normal person, not God's Will in human form, seems as though it would be a large factor in whatever feelings Kamui may have towards his friend. There are the additional facts of Kamui having a general "type," that Keiichi and Kotori can be considered rather similar in many ways (and, one must admit that she above all the others was Kamui's "real" love interest; her death nullifies it, but she was clearly the one he had strong feeling for). It's easy to see why Kamui enjoys Keiichi's friendship; it doesn't take a huge leap of logic to see Kamui taking that further, especially in our "no Fuuma, no Subaru" hypothetical.
(And even outside of the hypothetical. Kamui probably does have something of a crush on Subaru, but I doubt Subaru would let Kamui take it too far, out of kindness—Subaru does care about Kamui still, after all. It's harder to predict things with Fuuma; it's also much more difficult to picture an ending to X with both Kamui and Fuuma surviving. Even if they do, there's the debate of "possessed or like that all along" to take into account; we'll simply side-step the whole mess of Fuuma in this essay by calling him "dead." This isn't the Kamui/Fuuma essay, after all.)
Keiichi represents normalcy, a good person with no ulterior motives who likes and cares for Kamui without "because it's my destiny" factoring anywhere in it. In addition, the relationship would allow Kamui to take charge, which is probably good, as he tends to withdraw into himself when following others or left to his own devices. Kamui is a "leader" type, deep down, but surrounded by pushy people as he usually is, that side of him doesn't often come into play. Keiichi, while not a pushover, is clearly happy to follow Kamui's lead.
meta
Let it be said that this is the most difficult section of the essay. I'm supposed to tell you how I got into the pairing? Give you links? The latter can be hand-waved quite easily with "there are none;" Ka/Ke is not a disliked pairing in my opinion, but it rates third place (or lower) in Kamui pairings, and there really just isn't any fandom for them. I even tried to force my friends to write me Ka/Ke fanfic especially for this essay, to no avail.
Now I shall attempt to "meta" for you. In my experience, Kamui/Keiichi is not a disliked pairing, in that I've never seen anyone say they hated it. Rather, it's just a "it's fine, but my OTP is..." sort of deal. And while I won't contest that or argue it, it makes explaining the pairing and why I like it a little more difficult, if only for fear of inciting the S/K and K/F shippers. I'm interested in the relationships Kamui has with both Subaru and Fuuma, but for whatever reasons, I've never been very interested in either of those relationships when it comes to shipping. In fact, I tend to view Kamui as more or less utterly asexual, which calls my sanity in writing this essay into question, I think. I suppose my fondness for Ka/Ke is not in terms of "hot" or "pretty" or "makes good fanfic"—actually, I stand that the more boring Kamui/Keiichi is, the better. This is because I truly, deeply desire for Kamui to survive the end of X and go on to live a long, mundane life free of crucifixion and decapitation. With Subaru, there's always going to be angst and difficulty, even in the best of circumstances. And to me, at least, picturing Fuuma and Kamui having a long, happy life together is near impossible with the amount of angst and difficulties between them.
Not to say that neither pairing can be done, or that they can't end happily. Just that if S/K defaults with an angst level of 50 and F/K with one of 200, K/K defaults at maybe three. To me, nothing says "long, boring, and happy life" like Segawa Keiichi.
Now, as I mentioned above, there really aren't any fanworks... at... all... for the Kamui/Keiichi pairing. But if I find some, I'll certainly update the essay to reflect that. With luck—and watch my optimism bound!—this essay will prove to be so awesome that everyone reading it will write me some! Exclamation points!

As a couple, I imagine they'd be relatively mundane. If we imagine them a few years down the road, living together in the house provided for the young Seals, perhaps, I don't think it would be a particularly exciting picture. They're shown to get along well. Keiichi is agreeable and fairly serious (at least, not prone to joking), which would balance out Kamui's sometimes short temper and stubbornness. Kamui has the ability to be perceptive when the mood strikes him, and Keiichi is probably patient enough that they could work through most problems. I don't picture many loud fights (quiet ones, with glaring and "...", perhaps), or really loud anything. It would probably be quiet and calm and fairly boring to look at—something that in this case, at least, would be a very good thing.

ER, THAT IS TO SAY, I kind of love you! ♥ And agree with MUCH OF THE ABOVE; I. I like F/K and S/K both fine, but really believe that Keiichi is BY FAR the most healthy 'ship possibility for Kamui. And while yeah, they would be HORRIBLY MUNDANE together, t-the idea of fluffy domestic antics entices me. I AM A SUCKER FOR FLUFF, IT IS TRUE. I AM ALSO HORRIBLY BIASED, BUT.
So yes in conclusion to my MINDLESS FANGIRLING, iawtp and am likewise in the corner of wanting fanworks. :<b

Anyway, I find mundane domestic Kamui to be awesome and mundane domestic Kamui/Keiichi to be twice as much so. XD

Well, as it happens I did like your mentions that Kamui likes LOUD EXTROVERTED people, and that he opened up to Keiichi relatively easily. Largely, I just enjoyed the rare treat of Kamui/Keiichi analysis. *sparkles* Though I disagree about Fuuma - I think Fuuma/Kamui could work out and eventually have some semblance of fluffiness. But that's really a matter of opinion.

The Fuuma thing is an ESSAY UNTO ITSELF which is why I so shamelessly glossed over it all; I do think that it could end up happily if we go with the "possessed" theory (which is a word I disagree with but the general idea), but if we go with "he's always been this way," I see it significantly less so. On the other hand, though, I also have trouble picturing an end of X with them both alive - one or the other or both dead is how I always imagine it - which might factor in. I DON'T KNOW. IT'S VERY TL;DR

I liked this essay quite a bit, thanks for writing it. I especially like this bit:
This is because I truly, deeply desire for Kamui to survive the end of X and go on to live a long, mundane life free of crucifixion and decapitation. With Subaru, there's always going to be angst and difficulty, even in the best of circumstances. And to me, at least, picturing Fuuma and Kamui having a long, happy life together is near impossible with the amount of angst and difficulties between them.
I like S/K and F/K too but there's only so much angst I can take. ^^;

As for meta, I'm not sure if this really counts, but Kouri and Karasu have written some fics where they do end up together. Including this one YnM crossover. They're very SeiSub-centered for the most part, but um, they're in there? :D And something is better than nothing?
Also, I don't want to be a bitch about thi, but could you lj-cut the whole essay instead of just parts with a bunch of "..."? It's really screwing up the coding on my f-list. o.x

Kamui is my most favorite manga character in the whole world. :3 And as for Keiichi, I love him, he's adorable, enthusiastic and strong-willed! (*v*) I'm in love with the idea that Kamui can be a "normal" person when he's with Keiichi! (^_^;) However, I really see their relationship as a cute "BEST BUDDIES FOREVAR AND EVAAAAAAAAH THROUGH THICK AND THIN"! \^o^/ It's really cute and sweet, it's almost killing me! (*w*)
Anyway, I enjoyed reading this, especially that I've been deprived of X for years now! XDDD And the colored manga images of Keiichi and Kamui are adorable, too! (*w*)

It's very hard not to ship most of X's cast with one another, canon be damned, really. And K/K is so... unobjectionable! I can't think of any reasons why NOT to ship it aside from the obvious "I ship something else first." Which when you think about it isn't really an argument against K/K at all. D: XD

I haven't read X in a reaaaaaaaaaally long time, but K/K was my OTP. I loved them. So much. Keiichi in particular. I love the idea of a boring life with Keiichi. That might be a bit fun for Kamui, hahaha.
I love this couple. I love this essay. I love I love I love. :D
