SD-6: Introduction

Image hosting by Photobucket

Will Tippin. Sydney’s best friend. Reporter. Civilian.

Michael Vaughn. Sydney’s love interest. CIA Agent.

In the show ‘Alias’, these characters have interacted a very limited number of times, so limited you can count them on one hand. They’re also rivals, both of them wanting to ‘date’ (for lack of a better term) the same girl.

Why would anyone want to see them together? Why Waughn (Will/Vaughn)?

Because ‘no waste is worse than the waste of an occasion’, which means…

Crèdit Dauphin – The Backstory.

Image hosting by Photobucket

College Student.

Bank employee.

Part time Spy.

When she was 20, Sydney Bristow was contacted by a secret branch of the CIA called SD-6, which basically asked her to enrol. She did it, and worked for the association – whose cover was a bank called Crèdit Dauphin – for 7 years before a chain of events, culminating in her casually revealing her spy job (which I stress she had sworn to keep secret) to her fiancè Daniel Hecht, and SD-6 finding out about the leaking and killing him, Sydney found out she had been working for the enemy all along. SD-6, in fact, is not a branch of the CIA, but of a big evil organization called the Alliance Of 12 (SD means Section Disparue, Desappeared Section, referring to the fact that a lot of the people who work for the Alliance ‘vanished’ from CIA). She goes to the CIA – the real one, this time – with a red ‘Lola Rennt’ hairdo and some kind of machinery from a 14th Century Italian genius called Milo Rambaldi; she is approved as a double agent and assigned Agent Michael C. Vaughn as her contact for what seems like a very long and hard fight – key word ’seems’ (they’ll debunk SD-6 in a year and a half).

Wait; the surprises aren’t over yet! She also finds out that her father (big whoop-de-doo!) is also an SD-6 agent – with the cover of selling spare airplane parts – and a double Agent for CIA. By the end of 1st season she also finds out that her mother is alive, and NOT the timid English Literature Teacher she thought she was, but a cold and ruthless spy who with all probability has killed Vaughn’s father, William (a little predestination, here?) a very long time ago. AND Will has to commit perjury for his life’s sake! AND Syd’s best friend Francie is killed and replaced with a double! AND…

In short, a very high-octane, improbable and sometimes pretentious divertissement. But hey, the starting idea was ‘what if a college student was also a spy?’, so probably we should cut it a little slack. And it managed to stay on for a full five years, most of which in pre-DH and Lost ABC, so more power to it.

Agent Profile.

Michael Vartan plays Michael C. Vaughn.

Born in Fleury, Normandy, France, November 27th 1968, Michael – son of William Vaughn, american FBI Agent, and Miss Delorme, a french woman – loses his father at a very young age, and decides to work for the CIA in an attempt to find out who killed him. He is assigned to Agent Sydney Bristow as her contact with CIA, and as the show is mostly based around Sydney’s life, so becomes his, and they begin to fall in love until a year later, after having debunked SD-6 and the whole Alliance, they get to be together. He’s a big fan of hockey, his best friend is Agent Eric Weiss (Greg Grunberg), speaks French, English, Italian and Spanish, briefly dated a woman called Alice and has a dog called Donovan. He also is married at the end of the second season finale.

Bradley Cooper plays William D. Tippin.

William ‘Will’ D. Tippin was born in Austin, TX, March 8th, 1973. He met Sydney Bristow at UCLA as he was studying journalism, and became her second best friend, after Francine ‘Francie’ Calfo (Merrin Dungey). He had always been a little in love with Sydney, and suffered to see her with Danny (Edward Atterton). When Danny was killed, Will dedicated himself to find out the man’s murderer, act that put him in the line of fire and made him the most hated character during the show’s 1st season (most probably because the show’s audience saw him as an ‘obstacle’ to a possible Sydney/Vaughn relationship). He found out the truth about SD-6, wrote an article on it and published it, but was forced to commit perjury in court and say he made everything up when he didn’t, to save his own life (in one of the most contrived, see-it-coming-a-mile-away plot twists ever) and ends up getting a position of Data Researcher in the CIA. In the 2nd Season he falls in love with Francie, but right after their first kiss as lovers, she is killed and replaced by an evil clone, who works for an enemy of Sydney’s, the elusive Julian Sark, and frames Will for her crimes. He ends up stabbed by her and having to go into Witness Protection soon after having recovered, believing that Sydney was killed by Freplica (fake Francie) the same night she stabbed him. He has a younger sister called Amy, likes to run and briefly dated his assistant Jenny, a fling which didn’t end well; he broke up with her while on her car in a part of LA he didn’t know.

Video Data: their canonical relationship.

The relationship between Will and Vaughn doesn’t amount to much; just a few meetings about missions or some scenes waiting for Sydney, which show some kind of superficial friendship or point out the common ground between them, like the example below, but nothing more than that.

(Park bench. Vaughn sits alone. Will comes up and sits down next to him, puts a magazine down.)
WILL: Hope I didn't pull you away from something too important.
VAUGHN: No, it's all right. What's up?
WILL: Look, except for you, Sydney, and Jack, everybody I know -- and a lot of people I don't -- they think I'm a lying junkie, okay? And helping you, doing something for the CIA, it felt like a chance to do something that mattered again, you know? Like, I don't know, maybe I went through all this crap for a reason.
VAUGHN: (re: the magazine) What is this?
WILL: I know you can't pay me, it doesn't matter. You're looking at forty names. Those are forty kids that got a perfect score on the standardized test that included the Project Christmas questions.

From episode 2x08, ‘Passage, Part One’.

Mission: Why Waughn?

Image hosting by Photobucket

I could play coy and ask you ‘why not?’, but the truth is that, in the (too) few scenes these two actors have had together on the show, the chemistry (at least for me) was way way ahead of the one between Vartan and Jennifer Garner (Sydney Bristow). Probably the fact that Vartan and Cooper are very good friends helped a little bit, too…

But mostly, it's the fact that you can clearly see that, meeting in a completely different situation, they could have been pretty good friends... and if you're a Waughn like me, maybe more...

Though the ‘THEY ARE SO DOING IT’ radar turned on, for whatever reason, in the very scene up above, especially the ‘I know you can’t pay me, it doesn’t matter’. And the ‘Are you married’ scene in the 2nd Season Finale… with Vaughn’s incertainty, it looked every bit like he was going to come out and say he got married to Will!

Works better than Sydney/Vaughn, I say. XP (Though I'm still to partial to Sydney/Will...and Sydney/Sark, Sydney/Weiss.... ^^;)
