I think dealing with the Tess factor is important, because Danny says she's part of the reason they're doing what they're doing, but I also think the way the part was played in the movie completely torpedoes that intent, because Tess looks like she really, really hates Danny the whole time, and the ending is not a convincing reversal of that, imo.
Also, I think fic writers should be skilled enough to deal with canon love interests in ways that go beyond killing them off (though that's always a good one) or bashing them (always a bad one, even if in this particular case, I agree *g*).
