I've loved pretty much all of Willow and Xander's relationships outside each other (Well, the ones you've listed in your comment, anyway!) but I still keep the soft spot for W/X, and I'm so glad I was able to communicate them well enough in the essay!
I think that you nailed the "bad timing" theme. They should have worked. They should have gotten together. And they never really... did. But, in a way, it's also easy to see them still living next to each other, still knowing each other better than anyone, 20 years down the road. And maybe that's what's really at the heart of the Willow/Xander pairing. That's just how I see it, too.
