I thought the community originally switched to moderated posting due to spam issues, though?
It wasn't always moderated? That must have been before my time, I'm afraid. Creator!Mod recruited me a few years ago, and the discussion on what to look for while handling the moderation queue was more focussed on broken/missing code than spam identification. (Quite understandable, I suppose, as most spam tends to scream its existence from the rooftops, whilst broken/missing code can be trickier to spot.)
Sadly, spam is also still a consideration. Each time I identify a new spam journal (usually when a piece of spam turns up in one or more of my comms), I use the command console to ban_set it from every journal I can, but it's a never-ending battle. :/
(I wouldn't feel right about taking the comm off moderated posting anyway, not without the agreement of Creator!mod, who is currently out of touch.)
