I suppose that I hadn't really thought of Astrid as a character that had weaknesses... she was just sort of there to me. I liked that she was tough, but other than that I didn't think much of her.
Reading this, though, I can definitely see that I wasn't as observant as I should have been. I remember the scene where Hiccup left and I guess I just breezed over her being worried about him -- but thinking back, you're right. I agree that the flight wasn't given the time and treatment that it needed, but now I don't think that it came out of nowhere. In the end, considering where they both came from and where they're going, it's actually pretty sweet.
