That "She is a woman!" line really puzzles me when it comes to the theory (that I support as well) of Zoro treating both genders the same way. I'm not sure if it's OOC or Oda just had something entirely different in mind when it comes to Zoro's view of things. I do believe that Zoro handling women the way he does is actually respectful, because like you say, it means he acknowledges they can be just as strong as men - Kuina was the best example. (And that's probably the reason why Tashigi is so pissed too, because she naturally doesn't feel like he's taking her seriously when he doesn't want to fight her x3)
