For Zoro, Sanji is probably the one true rival since Kuina. And that means a lot, because Kuina was the most important person to him back then, the one person that he valued as a warrior and rival, that inspired him and that he strived to surpass. If you think about it that way, that Sanji is the one currently in the rival position, you'll see it in a completely different light.
Agreed. I also want to point out something. I don't think that Zoro's rivalry with Kuina equals to Zoro's rivalry with Sanji. Kuina was also Zoro's first/best/childhood friend- and they reason they are rivals in the first place was because they shared the same dream - to be the "world's best swordsman". Zoro and Sanji have very different dreams, so the reason they clash/have some sort of rivalry going on- is because they are so different in character, above everything else. So I would say that Zoro's rivalry with Sanji is another form of rivalry, but Sanji is in no way filling Kuina's place as a rival. In short, Zoro-Kuina, and Zoro-Sanji are on different degrees of rivalry. However, an interesting parallel can be seen this way. Zoro's first and probably only *relationship* ( until Luffy came along ) with another human being who impacted him so deeply was with Kuina. It started with...rivalry, and blossomed into mutual understanding. With Sanji, his first and strongest bond was with Zeff. With Zeff, he was also continuously beeing disagreeable and argumentative, but we all know how deeply he loved Zeff ( as a father figure ) inside. It's just that Sanji isn't good with being mushy with guys, although he has no problem being mushy with girls. So I think that there are parallels in Zoro-Sanji's relationship with each other, based on their previous relationships with Kuina and Zeff respectively. I seriously think that they are and can get as "bromantic" as the Giants, within due time... who are being paralled with Zoro-Sanji in the first place. :D
Anyway, thank you so much for writing this again, it was really fun to read through ( really gave me a lot of reason to believe in ZoSan ), and it inspired me to write up my own thoughts regarding Zoro and Sanji! You did a wonderful job with the hints as well ( I have a few more to add if you'd like ), and don't worry- it wasn't a hard read at all!
