Hmh, I think I'll have to rephrase that paragraph, because you're already the second one telling me that ! XD

I think if Nami had stood before him and offered her life instead of his like Sanji did, he would have definitely *not* let her do it - same goes for any other crewmember. So he would have reacted the same way.
But I can't really imagine she would have done it... I guess the scene just worked best with Sanji, maybe Oda thought that too. While imagining e.g. Chopper, Nami or Usopp standing up for Zoro instead does make a cute picture, I think it just made a stronger impact with Sanji. Not only because they usually "hate" each other, but also since they're pretty much on the same level. It's hard to tell now and we will probably never get to know about the "what if...", but while I agree with what you say about Zoro actually worrying about his nakamas etc., what I actually meant is: If Kuma had (for whatever reason) wanted Nami's head instead of Luffy's, I'm not sure Zoro would have gone down on his knees and begged Kuma to take him instead. Sure, he would do practically anything to try and protect his comrades, but for me personally, the scene was so strong because Zoro doing this for someone was unexpected and not something one should take for granted. It was because he believes in Luffy, his captain, and because he believes that Luffy will be pirate king one day, that he was willing to give up his own dream (ZoLu shippers actually get a lot out of that scene too xD;).

So what I actually mean is... I see it like this:
=> If Nami or anyone else had done the same for him as Sanji did, Zoro would never have let them give up their life for him
=> But if it had been a different situation from the start, I'm not entirely convinced he would have given up his life and dream for just anyone. I mean, I'm pretty sure Sanji would sacrifice himself to protect the life of any woman, but with Zoro, it did feel so strong to me because it was something "special" in my eyes. In a way, it's not only his dream he would be giving up, but also Kuina's.

But I think this is something where opinions differ. When I talked about it with a friend, she also said she could never imagine Zoro doing it for anyone in the crew (I can't either, it seems strange for... e.g. Brooke, Frankie, Nami) while I'm sure others will claim he would have offered himself for anyone.

I do agree about his function though, he is actually a very good first mate IMO, even though he slacks off on the ship. He's not dumb at all, even though some fans could assume that since he seems like the straight forward musclehead-guy. xD There are some subtle details ... f.e.: Whenever Luffy is gone, Zoro takes over as a "leader" as seen in the battle against Oz. As a first mate, he always stands behind his captain. He was the only one to not falter and try to convince Usopp to stay during their fight, staying by Luffy's side instead. And we see him caring a lot about Chopper... or after their battles in Alabasta, he even carries Nami with her hurt feet even though he himself is half-dead xD

But thanks for pointing it out, I will edit the post later to try and make myself and my stance on this more clear, I never meant it to sound as if Zoro wasn't caring for his other nakamas.

And thanks for reading and commenting ^^
