I loved your essay. Gwen/Lancelot is such a great pairing,I always get angry at people saying that those 2 episodes were not enough to not make any kind of connection between them seem non-forced ;) I agreed with almost eveything in this post and it was very interesting reading another opinion on some points :)
(What really interests me though:You described Guinevere as ...typically known as the wife of Arthur and the Queen of Camelot? A strong female in the legend of King Arthur and his knights, certainly not what one would think of as a maid in the castle. I always despised the character of Guinevere (Gwen in Merlin was the first one I liked) and thought her to be a very weak and pathetic (excuse for a) woman and was wondering if you could tell me what versions of the Arthurian legend you have read?:)
