Thank you for the comments! Escaflowne will always be my One True Fandom, just because each time I watch it I fall in love with it. And while there as been other stuff I have watched and love (the only other series that I love nearly as much as Escaflowne is Princess Tutu) nothing has been quite as real to me as Esca.

OH I am totally with you on all those points. I think Van's feelings of resentment and betrayal are the most culpable. I think it is hard to realize that Van's hurt over it wasn't just the fact that Folken was responsible for the destruction of Fanelia, but also that by not coming back Van is burdened with something that he never wanted, that and just the fact that he loved Folken and that loss is huge. And it is heartbreaking because Van is the motivation for Folken, which is why I think Hitomi and Folken sort of connect towards the end. They both want Van to be happy and content, and in trying to do that they have/had the tendency to hurt him even further.
