Sorry took me so long to get to this, I took a day off from the Internet yesterday.
How do you think one can deal with the curse when writing Angel/Cordy? I mean, it's fairly clearly demonstrated in AtS that "perfect happiness" is much more than just a euphemism for orgasm, but it brings a pretty dark overtone to the relationship, that Angel can never be allowed to become too happy in it.
AtS made it pretty clear that the curse isn't about sex, you are correct. In fact AtS made it very clear that the curse isn't simple at all. Also canonly, in Season Five he slept with Nina without losing his soul and though I didn't get the relationship and felt he was using her, it is clear he did care about Nina.
My main theory on the curse is that counts on ignorance of it's loop hole. The gypsies didn't want Angel to have peace, to feel he could be forgiven for his past actions as Angelus -- they never wanted him to forget what he was -- a vampire. When Angel met Buffy, it was the first time in his life that a) he fell in love and b) he truly started to do something GOOD with his soul -- to me Angel saw Buffy as a salvation and with her he could forget he was monster.
When he and Buffy made love, it wasn't just Buffy's first time, it was also Angel's. First love. With Buffy he felt like a guy, and left the vampire behind -- a main factor of B/A's relationship is that she never really accepted he was a vampire and I think at first it was what he wanted, because he wanted to a man for her and not the monster he felt he was. Take all these factors in mind, when he and Buffy made love, he wasn't thinking about his past or that he was vampire, it was their first time, hers and his in way and wham you have perfect happiness...I call this theory Ignorance is Bliss.
By the time Angel starts to have feelings for Cordelia -- he's been Angelus again, he's tried to save Darla, failed, went on a revenge streak and embraced his dark side with the soul, nearly lost all his friends, found peace with Buffy's death (for that brief time she was dead) and went through a lot of things. He changed, he grew, and with Cordelia, Wesley and Gunn, he's accepted as both a vampire and a man.
Perfect Happiness...elusive thing to grab, especially for Angel.
Second love, never exactly the same as first love no matter what.
And wouldn't it damage Cordelia's pride to be with a guy who she knew achieved "perfect happiness" with another woman, and not with her?
One can be happy without it being 'perfect'. But I'd honestly write it so Angel proved Cordelia that he loves her and only her -- Cordelia's been third best in her lifetime (Xander) she's not going to want to be second best you are correct -- Angel would have to show her she's not. Cordelia would have work through her own issues on the subject and worry/jealously about Buffy.
But it's all part of the conflict and the story -- it's all part of the wonderful potential and possibility of Angel and Cordelia. And I personally feel that their friendship, their relationship could move forward and face all the above challenges and create a truly wonderful, loving, sexy, adult romantic relationship.
