I'm way late, both in commenting and in jumping on this bandwagon
Hey, you made my week! No such thing as late. *g*
what most intrigues me about this post-apocalyptic is the paradox in trying to become an adult when there aren't any adult mentors or role models anymore. So much of the characters' attitudes toward sex seem jarringly youthful, as when the woman in "Sail Beyond the Stars" pulls away momentarily due not to any kind of adult trauma (related to intimacy or sex), but because of memories of her father's death
Yes, that's something I've only really just begun thinking about. You're right, it does raise very interesting questions, and alters the meaning of all their relationships in intriguing ways.
Also, the uncomfortably close conjunction between sex and emotional intimacy in the very first episode, when Kurdy clearly wasn't getting what he needed from his erotic encounter, seemed strangely child like
It's hard to imagine what it would be like for the younger ones, like Kurdy, who didn't have the constant exposure to sexuality that kids do today. I imagine that Jeremiah, being older, has a very different outlook and set of experiences. Kurdy might have learned a lot about adult sexuality from books, and maybe magazines. It's interesting that his pornographic dreams are based on Italian master paintings, isn't it?
I'm not expressing this terribly well because I'm a bit over tired, but I think there's a wealth of material to be explored in this fandom regarding how people who are not fully adult in their psychosocial development manage sexual and romantic relationships, perhaps especially with regard to the growth and maturation such relationships may prompt.
I think a lot of the clues we're given support that, definitely. Kurdy says in the first episode that he's never even had a friend before. Theo says that sex is a common pasttime, given that there's no television. *g* Markus obviously has intimacy issues. Jeremiah's friend Michelle (Mother of Invention) is an interesting character... have you seen that ep yet?
Thanks so much for responding to the essay - not much makes me happier than new Jeremiah fans. :D
if you're still in any way inclined to copy tapes, I would be incredibly grateful, especially for anything from season two.

Can you play DVD-Rs, or only tapes?
