It's a misconception that mainly springs from those pre-english release spoilers. Dr. Cid doesn't show up in any FMVs, so if you were gleaning your conception of the plot entirely from youtube videos, you wouldn't think of the man being anyone else than Balthier, I suppose. The spoiler baby comes up every now and again still, mostly when people try to make a narrative out of the credits sequence.
