I LOVE your analysis!! Though I had loved Edvy as my OTP before reading this, it was more based on the morbid way they clash yet undeniably (to me) fit together. With a side dish of them being asethically fabulous together. Your essay really grounded me to the theory of their unrealistic relationship.
I HAVE to recommend you this fic: "Waste Land" By hieronymousb (LJ user) who is the BEST Edvy writer I've ever had the pleasure to read. This tells the REALISTIC "taking away Envy's powers and forcing him to accept Edward's mercy" situation perfectly. It occurs after the series where both Envy and Ed lands in Germany and both find themselves unable to use their powers. Her portrayal of the characters are damn perfect. Their transgression from Hate to reluctant reliance to grudging acceptance and still evolving is very subtle and VERY In Character.
Also you may have heard of the infamous doujin game "Blue Bird's Illusion"? AU verse where Ed is sucessful in restoring Al's body and himself had joined the military. In which one of the ending features Ed becoming a Homunculous: Pride. The last scene shows a image of him standing with Envy. This is the OP movie to the game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEmz6oMPGqM
Also in the manga Ed and Envy are not related. And there is some humourous (Less hateful unlike the anime. Since Hohenheim is not Envy's father therefore no 'abandon' fiasco, Envy doesn't have a reason to hate Ed. Thus lighter interaction) dialogue/banter between them. "Wait! I'm not planning to fight you, Bean.." "That's 5!" "What's your problem" "Twice just now!...and three times in the Laboratory!! You've called me a Bean!!" "Such a good memory.."
There is a scene where they actually sat and talked civily for a few pages..until Envy began his bloodlust talk. Then when Envy transformed into his true form (not as Ed's half brother) in Gluttony's stomache fascinating yet heartbreaking: "Dont look at me...".
Overall I found the Manga much more promising in terms of Edvy. Unlike the anime which throws in the whole 'half-brother' complication (not that I dont like it)
