Getting To Know You - My Introdcution to Alice and Jasper

I heard about Twilight long before I had ever read it, though I admit at the time it didn’t interest me. I had read plenty of vampire novels before, but they weren’t really my ‘thing’. It was just after Eclipse was released when a friend finally convinced me to read, assuring me I would fall in love with Edward and Bella.

And I didn’t just read Twilight, I devoured it. Think of the reaction to every new Harry Potter book and you’ve got me the first time I read Twilight. I was utterly besotted, and needless to say, tore through New Moon and Eclipse with equal vigour. A great deal of my enthusiasm stemmed from the fact that I identified with Bella in many ways (minus the gorgeous vampire boyfriend of course!), something that just doesn’t happen with many of the books I read.

I will admit however, I was largely uninterested in the more minor characters until New Moon. Though I did like the Cullen family, they weren’t of any particular concern to me, after all, I (like many readers I should think) was there for Edward and Bella.

That changed with one sentence.

Jasper was the first one I saw—he didn't seem to see me at all. His eyes were only for Alice. She went quickly to his side; they didn't embrace like other couples meeting there. They only stared into each other's faces, yet, somehow, the moment was so private that I still felt the need to look away. (New Moon, p.495)

I was completely smitten. Forget Edward and Bella, this was the kind of relationship girls everywhere should be wishing they had. It was gorgeous and understated, and I wanted more.

The Empath - Jasper Whitlock Hale

Another was taller, leaner, but still muscular, and honey blond. (Twilight, p.16)

Jasper was born in Texas in 1843 and joined the Confederate army when he was just sixteen. By the first battle of Galveston he was the youngest Major in Texas, “not even acknowledging [his] real age”. He was changed by a vampire named Maria who was drawn to his latent ability to sense and manipulate the emotions of those around him.

“I live every day in a climate of emotion. For the first century of my life, I lived in a world of bloodthirsty vengeance. Hate was my constant companion.” (Jasper - Eclipse, p.300)

He stayed with Maria for several decades, helping her to create armies of new-born vampires in order to control large areas of Texas and northern Mexico. However, this lifestyle caused Jasper to become depressed and he left, travelling with another pair of vampires, Peter and Charlotte, for a few years. Some time later, travelling alone in Philadelphia, he met Alice.

His physical appearance is marred by the many scars acquired during his time with Maria. Whilst hardly noticeable to human eyes, they are a terrifying warning indeed to other vampires.

The scars were Jasper’s most dominant feature. It was hard to take my eyes off his ravaged neck and jaw - hard to believe that even a vampire could survive that many sets of teeth ripping into his throat... The scars were like a lighted billboard. Dangerous, they screamed. (Breaking Dawn, p.402)

Of the Cullens, Jasper has the most difficulty with the vegetarian lifestyle, often struggling to stick to his ‘diet’. He is also very scholarly, studying philosophy at college and reading during his spare time.

The Psychic - Mary Alice Brandon Cullen

The short girl was pixielike, thin in the extreme, with small features. Her hair was a deep black, cropped short and pointing in every direction. (Twilight, p.16)

Which brings us to Alice. Her story is somewhat easier to tell, since we (like her) know so little of it.

What we do know is that Alice was born about 1901 and grew up in Biloxi, Mississippi, with her parents and younger sister Cynthia. During her teens, Alice was held in a mental asylum due to her ability to see glimpses of the future. She was also the favourite of a vampire who worked there.

She was changed in the early 1920’s, to protect her from another vampire, James, who was hunting her. Unfortunately the vampire worker who had set her free was killed in vengeance and Alice awoke with no memory of her human life.

“For everyone else, the pain of transformation is the sharpest memory they have of their human life. I remember nothing of being human.” (Alice - Twilight, p.362)

Soon after her transformation however, she had a vision of Jasper, and the life they would have together, living with the Cullens. It was this alone that kept her holding onto her essential humanity and prevented her from becoming “a complete savage”.

“She saw Jasper, and knew he was looking for her, before he knew it himself. She saw Carlisle and our family and they came together to find us.” (Edward - Twilight, p.253)

Alice’s best friend is Bella, despite her frequent exasperation by her clothing and lack of personal interest. She has also admitted on occasion to living vicariously through Bella in regards to human milestones (birthdays, prom, etc.), though she repaid this by single-handedly organising Edward and Bella’s wedding in Breaking Dawn.

The one other great love in Alice’s life is fashion. She dresses most of the family, refusing to see them wear the same thing more than once, and won’t settle for anything less than designer labels. Her closet alone takes up an entire room in the house, though she only keeps those clothes that have special meaning to her such her wedding dress and the clothes she wore the day Jasper found her.

I Felt Hope - Jasper and Alice

And then Alice and Jasper's is the most…mystical. They just ARE together, and have been from before they even met. They are not complete without each other – and never were. That's what makes them different from the other couples, the "never were." They were already not-whole before they met, waiting for each other. (Stephenie Meyer - Twilight Lexicon)

Alice and Jasper first meet on a rainy day in Philadelphia in 1948. As Jasper tells it in Eclipse, he was still unused to venturing out in the daylight hours, and ducked into a half-empty diner so as not to draw attention to himself.

"She was there - expecting me, naturally." He chuckled once. "She hopped down from the high stool at the counter as soon as I walked in and came directly toward me” (Jasper - Eclipse, p.301)

He explains his shock at Alice’s actions, given that his past only gave one explanation for her actions. Yet he knew she didn’t mean to attack, since her emotions were unlike anything anything he had ever felt. Of course Jasper couldn’t have known that Alice had already been waiting almost thirty years for him, nor that she undoubtedly loved him, despite their never having met.

“ 'You've kept me waiting a long time,' she said.”
I didn’t realise Alice had come to stand behind me again.
"And you ducked your head, like a good Southern gentleman, and said 'I'm sorry, ma'am.'" Alice laughed at the memory.
Jasper smiled down at her. "You held out your hand, and I took it without stopping to make sense of what I was doing. For the first time in almost a century, I felt hope." (Eclipse, p.301)

Alice also admits that upon meeting Jasper she felt relief, having almost convinced herself they would never meet. Two years later they found the Cullens (with a little more help from Alice’s visions of course) and joined the family.

“Emmett and I were away hunting. Jasper shows up, covered in battle scars, towing this little freak” - he nudged Alice playfully - “who greets them all by name, knows everything about them, and wants to know which room she can move into” (Edward - Eclipse p.302)

Their life with the Cullens has not always been easy. Jasper is not as bonded to the family as Alice, and whilst he is fond of them, does not love them unconditionally as she does. She has an especially close relationship with Edward, “freaks among those who are already freaks”.

Jasper, by contrast is “always a little on the fringe, part of things, but never the centre of them”. His life is almost wholly centred around Alice, and it is only for her sake that he resists human blood, difficult though it is for him. He is fiercely protective of her, so much so that “there would be no limit to who or what he would destroy for Alice” as he makes clear in Midnight Sun, during a conversation about Bella’s knowledge of the Cullen’s true nature:

“I won’t let Alice live in danger, even a slight danger. You don’t feel about anyone the way I feel about her, Edward, and you haven’t lived through what I’ve lived through, whether you’ve seen my memories or not. You don’t understand.” (Jasper - Midnight Sun, p.84)

That is not to say Alice does not feel as strongly about Jasper. On the contrary, she is just as protective of him as he is of her. This is most obvious during New Moon, as she travels to Volterra with Bella in order to save Edward.

"If there were any chance we could win… if there were a way that the four of us could save my brother by fighting for him, maybe it would be different. But we can't, and, Bella, I can't lose Jasper like that."
I realized why her eyes begged for my understanding. She was protecting Jasper, at our expense, and maybe at Edward's, too. I understood, and I did not think badly of her.
(New Moon, p.426)

This is touched upon again during Breaking Dawn, when Alice and Jasper disappear without warning or explanation, just as Alice has foreseen a terrifying event in Edward and Bella’s future. Bella explains that if Alice saw Jasper dying, then she would do whatever it took to save him. Even if that meant leaving the Cullens to their fate.

“She knew if he faced the Volturi, he would die. She was willing to die herself rather than put him in danger. Willing for me to die too. Willing for you to die.” (Bella - Breaking Dawn, p.564)

It did turn out however, that Alice had a rather different reason for leaving, one that in fact helped towards saving the lives of her entire family. Certainly she is immensely grateful to return home, and even Jasper seems to be more emotionally attached to the family by the novels conclusion.

Jasper/Alice and Fandom

The Twilight fandom is huge. We range from the truly passionate to those just in it for the laughs. Some of us have a bad reputation, some of us are avid devotees, some us are old enough to know better. If you’re new around these parts, it can pretty intense.

Alice and Jasper don’t have a huge representation in fandom, but you can find them if you look hard enough. With the recently released movie the fan base will no doubt swell, and I can only hope Alice and Jasper gain a few extra fans from it.
